Ollie's rather unreliable memory, which loses whatever he has in mind whenever he hears something new, gets him into all kinds of trouble on the way to the market.
Tedd grew up with three brothers. His family lived on a farm in Pennsylvania for several years then returned to Elmira until Tedd was ten years old. His father's work then required that they move to Gainesville, Florida. There, Tedd's first art lessons in an abandoned dentist's office over the Happy Hour pool hall eventually led to a fine arts degree from the University of Florida.
He and his wife, Carol, started their family in Tallahassee where Tedd worked as a commercial illustrator. Carol, a kindergarten teacher, drew Tedd's attention to children's books. Their first son, Walter, inspired his breakthrough picture book, NO JUMPING ON THE BED!.
He and his family now live in Elmira. His second son, William, now stars in NO MORE WATER IN THE TUB!, a sequel to his first book. He has now published over 50 books as author and illustrator.
I might be in the minority here, but I think this is a book I'll be pulling out of our K-6 library. Ollie just repeats what he last heard, and it gets him in trouble with each new person because they interpret it the wrong way for their situation. I guess there are good lessons here about being careful what you say from group to group. My problem is with physical assaults on the boy or threats of them, for example: "A kick is what you need from me;" "He beat poor Ollie with his lute." And plenty of images of Ollie being chased away by angry adults. We don't need these words or images. Plenty of better books to read to your child or a group of kids. (My copy is from 1988. It's 30 years old and time to retire it, I think.)
Ollie Forgot by Ted Arnold is fantastic! I used to read it to my children over 30 years ago. I eventually became a became a preschool teacher and continued to read it to my preschoolers. It’s a well loved book enjoyed by all! The rhyming text made it fun to read and fun to listen to. The illustrations are colorful and expressive. I wish this book were still in print! If you have an opportunity to purchase this book, don’t pass on the chance, your kids will thank you for it!
In this book, our young friend Ollie is a good boy but has a bit of a memory problem. His mom asks him to walk to the market to pick up a few items, ``A joint of beef, a wedge of cheese, a loaf of bread, too, if you please.'' To help with his memory problem Ollie walks along repeating the last statements that he has heard. As the book goes on Ollie has encounters with various people, most of whom he infuriates with his latest rhyme. The drawings are cute and fun and children really love them. This book has great word pattern and rhyme and is a read aloud that kids will grab to read over and over on their own.
