Social worker Max Maitland is trained to help people, not leave them vulnerable to evil. His unexpected and unwanted legacy bestows upon him a spirit beast—a cougar—to help protect him and his sister. Bound to his sister by their legacy, Max is frustrated at the prospect of sacrificing his own goals and dreams like his bachelor uncle.

Robin Chandler’s reputation as a mural artist allows her temporary escape from her native Sedona, Arizona, away from the ex-fiancé who cheated on her and where she suffered the horror of a cougar attack. After four months on the road, she’s ready to return to the desert landscape close to her heart, but meeting Max Maitland is a potent diversion. When Max tells her his sister is fighting evil spirits, Robin questions her choices. This otherwise irresistible guy can’t really believe in the “woo-woo” can he?

The Keeper of Secrets isn’t a job Max Maitland had on his bucket list. It came to him via heredity, and it’s the saving grace for his sister and her friend who have unusual talents. While the three of them are hunting down a demon that killed at least one person, Max is trying to balance his new social work career and a budding relationship.

The special someone doesn’t want any entanglements. Robin Chandler’s street smart, independent, and still smarting from her ex-fiancé’s betrayal with her ex-best friend. Art is Robin’s salvation and her vocation, and she makes good money at it. Getting tangled up with Max is completely out of the question.

But she does. Get tangled up with him. In Chicago and Sedona, and it gets pretty hot. And there are bad guys and Max’s family pushing them together – and pulling them apart.

This is the third in Brandenburg’s Kundigerin series. The paranormal elements are well-presented and interesting, the romance enjoyable. Max has such a kind heart, always giving of himself, that he won my heart from the get-go.

I bought this book thinking it was “just a stand-alone” and, while it was possible to read just this one without being confused about the overall arcing story line, I just couldn’t. The events of the first 2 books mentioned in this one sounded too exciting and juicy to pass up. So, somewhere in the middle of the second chapter, I stopped reading this book and bought the first two. They were great reads. I’m so glad I read them all in order, just because they were so well crafted.

Mrs. Brandenburg did a wonderful job using an overall story arc to tie the books together. In the second book, she introduced 2 previously unknown characters as the main focus, however for this one, she took a secondary character and thrust him into the role of the leading man. While I love supporting cast and think they’re vital to the success of a story, I’m not usually fond of that in romance books. If they weren’t important enough to be the focus in the first book(s), I don’t generally care enough to follow their story in a new book. (I know I’m a snob.) In this case, though, Mrs. Brandenburg couldn’t have used anyone else to complete this trilogy properly. It *had* to be Max.

Unfortunately, I don’t like the leading lady, Robin. Don’t know why. Just don’t like her. I don’t particularly think she’s a good fit for Matt or his family. She seems like a forced fit. The relationship doesn’t seem as solid and deep as the relationships formed in the previous two books. I don’t trust her to not bolt down the road ... That said, she’s well written and believable.

While I don’t love this book as much as the first two, it's a satisfying conclusion to a great trilogy. I have no doubt I’ll be re-reading this series over and over throughout the years. Thank you, Mrs. Brandenburg for a great trilogy.

Kundigerin, book 3 in the series, continues the story of our favorite baker, Marissa (Maitland) Harper and her brother, Max, who is a Huter de s Geheimnisses (keeper of secrets). We meet a few (not too many) friends, all brought together because of their abilities. When one friend is revealed to be evil, he is destroyed and killed. But by whom or what was this evil demon? Neither Marissa or new friend, Giselle (also a Kundigerin-one who knows/sees psychic signatures left by events) can get a reading on this new apparition. Was it his long lost brother or is this a new entity to the powers they have inherited?
I was, once again, immersed in the story. The plotlines are easy to follow. She has created characters and physical descriptions eloquently, without overwhelming the reader. This is my favorite of the series thus far because by this time I am totally involved with the characters. AND this book is far from my regular genre.

Confession #1 -- I am a sucker for Sedona, Arizona, and all things woo-woo. Confession #2 -- I adore it when a man says "please." Confession #3 -- I don't normally read paranormal romance, but I made an exception for Rising Mists (Book 3 in the Kundigerin series) and I'm very glad I did. Vortexes and red rocks, spirit animals and power crystals, rock stars and libido-enhancing baked goods all combine in a ripping good yarn. Max is a sweetheart and Robin is worthy of his devotion in this supernatural love story that has its roots in solid ground.

This was one of my favorite books to write, from the beauty and mysticism of Sedona to cameos from family members who were a little off center in their books.

I made a trip to Sedona several years ago with the expressed intent to write about the vortexes, but I didn't have a strong enough story to do them justice. As I started writing RISING MIST, I knew I had the perfect setting for the final confrontation.
