Of course you know that Wisconsin is more than Badgers and beer; more than Packers and cheese. But have you truly explored the state? Do you know where Frank Lloyd Wright’s fabulous architecture is tucked, or where the state’s longest main street runs? Have you reveled in the majesty of the Mississippi River bluffs, or experienced the charms of Madeline Island? You’ll discover all of these treasures and more in Backroads of Wisconsin. This discovery guide showcases the Badger states hidden corners, revealing a friendly, colorful countryside that both armchair and hands-on travelers will enjoy uncovering. Historical vignettes and humorous anecdotes are sprinkled liberally amid the descriptions of pathways that meander through coulees, over prairies, and along the riverbanks of rural Wisconsin. Whether you’re planning a day trip and are looking for unusual destinations or you simply want to learn more about the region, Backroads of Wisconsin will lead you deep into Wisconsin’s soul--beyond the cows and corn. Bob Rashid of Madison is the author of Wisconsins Rustic Roads and Gone Fishing. His work has appeared in Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, Travel/Holiday, Northwest Airlines World Traveler, and other national publications.
If you hurry, you could still see some of Wisconsin's fall foliage, but if you happen to miss it you could still experience some of Wisconsin’s backroads while the weather is nice yet.
Fall happens to be one of my favorite times of the year, and there is a book at the West Salem Library branch that caught my eye called Backroads of Wisconsin: Your Guide to Wisconsin’s Most Scenic Backroad Adventures written by Martin Hintz. There is some beautiful photos in this book as well.
Wisconsin’s backroads allow the traveler to investigate the state’s natural beauty and colorful history. There is much to view with all of Wisconsin’s lakes, hills, forests, and such, not to mention wildlife you might see on your drive.
A nice feature of this book is it provides guidelines on what roads to take, as well as describes favorite attractions to stop and visit.
If you are contemplating a weekend getaway in Wisconsin, a one day road trip, or possibly a longer vacation, there are other similar books on Wisconsin travel. Just ask one of the library clerks to show you the section these books are located in. Enjoy your trip!

This is a picturesque book with full page photos. Regretfully, directions are hard to follow to plan route, making it really a table top book (not a travel guide), which will give natural attractions you can expect in the badger state.
