John Hemmings is an experienced criminal attorney and writer of crime fiction with a one hundred percent record as a criminal trial lawyer - not one of his clients has ever been executed...yet!
He graduated in English literature and spent five years as a post-graduate lecturer before turning to a life of crime - on the right side of the fence of course. Each of his books features Boston private investigator Mark Kane and his long-time companion Lucy.
Many of the stories are inspired by actual events and people the author has met and worked with during his career, but names and locations have been changed to protect the innocent - and sometimes the guilty.
On his website: www.johnhemmings.net you can read the first 5 chapters of each of his books in the Mark Kane Mysteries series (and even read the first 4 chapters of the next book in the series: 'Missing'. which is due to be published in approximately 6 weeks).
Another well-written mystery from John Hemmings. Good characters, the odd sprinkling of humour and a complicated plot. This adventure falls a little short of my requirements for that 5th star in that one ingredient is missing - some real excitement. There was plenty of dialogue, and forensic analysis of the minute details of their developing case, but the action was only intermittent and I found my concentration drifting.
I have read several of Hemming's mysteries featuring Kane and Lucy. Till Death was my favorite. Paying for your mistakes and paying for your sins or crimes is quite different. Everyone has made mistakes, so you can't help but be rooting for Lisa to be free of what's haunting and dogging her. There are others in the story who continually make bad choices, but those choices don't just affect themselves but hurt (or even kill) others. We want them caught. We want them to pay. Kane and Lucy are up to the task of solving mysteries which resolve the repercussions of mistakes, sins, and crimes.
Private investigator Kane and his assistant Lucy work together to find a murderer who is also blackmailing a woman. Full of mystery and intrigue, I really enjoyed this book.
Don Maddox and Lisa Burrows wed after a whirlwind courtship a few years ago in Florida. Now, Lisa is behaving strangely, and Don hires Kane and his assistant / partner/ companion Lucy to find out what's bothering his wife. Kane and Lucy observe a transaction which might be a blackmail payoff. However, the case takes a macabre turn when Kane finds the possible blackmailer dead in a bathtub ...
Kane, a private investigator, ably assisted by Lucy, his assistant, is hired by a wealthy client to discover what is troubling his wife, Lisa. An okay read with good pace. 3 and a half stars
This is the third Mark Kane mystery I've read and my favorite so far. I can't wait to read another one. Don and Lisa Maddox fell in love at first sight, becoming engaged after spending only one day together. He knew nothing of her past and didn't want to know. It didn't matter. Now, five years later, Don Matrix contacts Kane because he is concerned about his wife. They are still deeply in love, but she has become secretive, deceptive, and seems worried. He's afraid someone is threatening her in some way. Has her past come back to haunt her? Kane and Lucy, newly promoted to assistant detective, discover this case is more complex than it first appears, involving a serial killer, blackmail, and an attack on Kane that could have been deadly. If you love detective stories, you can't miss with this one.
John Hemmings is moving away from the Chandler format to building his own style. The relationship between the two investigators grows and provides some laughter and comedic moments. This job starts in Boston and moves to Minnesota. Unexpected twists keep the reader finding new area to enjoy. A great read for murder mystery readers.
Another great Mark Kane mystery. Lucy appoints herself assistant private investigator to aid Kane in his business. Kane is hired by a loving husband who suspects that there is something wrong with his wife. Her behavior has changed significantly--she refuses to discuss anything in her past before they met. Kane & Lucy reveal long-held secrets by their investigation. I rate this a 4.9.
Mark Kane is like the old Mickey Spillane mysteries. So if you like those you will like this series as well. Good old mystery with very little in the sex innuendo department.
