In this study of Physical Science, you'll be introduced to the stunning world you live in, as well as the universe around it. From the composition of air to icebergs to astrophysics, you will receive thorough lessons in each element of the physical world. Sixteen modules are included, that are designed to be completed in a total of 32 weeks time, though the course can be adjusted to your own needs. "On your own" questions throughout the text are designed to help cement concepts, while "Study Guide" questions prepare for tests. All information that must be memorized is centered and in bold text, and all definitions and important terms are also bolded. Experiments using only household equipment, graphics, illustrations, charts and other visual representation of various concepts are also included for maximum clarity. This second edition is newly updated, with more color illustrations and higher-quality drawings. Fuller responses to student questions; easy-to-perform (and more engaging!) experiments; in-text graphics for online resources; additional material for advanced learners; and an extra test booklet (sold separately) are also new improvements. Topics include the atmosphere; hydrosphere; weather; structure of Earth; environmentalism; physics of motion; Newton's laws; gravity; and astrophysics. 510 pages, hardcover. Due to these changes, editions should not be mixed. Grade 8, but may be used with younger/older students as parents decide.
Jay Wile learned about his love for chemistry when his dedicated parents bought him his first chemistry set. Many stink bombs and a few explosions later, he was hooked! Although he loved chemistry, he also had many other interests. For a while, he thought about becoming a concert pianist, but unfortunately, his fingers were not long enough (no kidding!). As he was finishing up his high school years, he became extremely interested in the theater and began to pursue a career in acting. Partly because he learned the science behind some of the special effects of the plays in which he performed, he eventually went back to his first love: chemistry.
He went to the University of Rochester in upstate New York to study chemistry, and while he was there, he began working on nuclear chemistry experiments. He became so fascinated with nuclear chemistry that he stayed at the University of Rochester and got a Ph.D. in that field. For several years, he did research in the field under the auspices of the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. This research led to several grants and many publications. While doing research, Dr. Wile was also an assistant professor of chemistry.
Dr. Wile's love of science is demonstrated by the many awards he has won for excellence in teaching and research. He has also presented numerous lectures on the topics of Nuclear Chemistry, Christian Apologetics, Homeschooling, and Creation vs. Evolution. He has published 30 articles on these subjects in nationally-recognized, peer-reviewed journals, and has 9 books to his credit, most of which belong to the award-winning "Exploring Creation with" series of junior-high and high-school science courses.
You did it Dr. Wile, you really got me hooked! This is such an enjoyable, fascinatingly interesting, and stunningly phenomenal piece of work! To learn about the stunning physical world we live in, created by an All-loving God is such a wonderful gift! This book has SO much color which really fascinated me and kept me moving through it. Actually, the pictures were not what kept me moving... it was the content. But the addition of all the colors made it sooooo much more enjoyable (not that it wasn't enjoyable enough... trust me). If you are looking to learn about the physical world and simple astrophysics, the atmosphere, hydrosphere, weather, structure of the earth, environmentalism, Newton's laws, and so much more, then this book will surely keep you engaged 100% all the way through!! Such a remarkable book! I also love that it stresses the importance that every simple thing was created by God!
simply terrible. it is really disappointing to have your science book constantly trying to counter the overwhelming scientific evidence that disproves young-earth creationism. when the author calms down about young-earth “evidence” and actually starts teaching about the topics students need to learn in physical science, he does so in an over-complicated, patronizing, and badly-formatted style. no one should have to read this book when there are so many other textbooks that could teach physical science.
I did the second edition course in a co-op setting and learned so much, yet enjoyed it at the same time. You can currently buy the textbook and solutions/tests books here: http://www.rainbowresource.com/proddt...
Most of the supplies needed to complete the course's 48 experiments are items you'll already have in your house, although the items you're less likely to have can be purchased here: http://www.hometrainingtools.com/phys...
I finished this course on May 14, 2015. This book was my first textbook by Dr. Wile. I loved the style of clarity and conversation he took in writing this book. My one regret is that I didn't do General Science by Dr. Wile in 7th grade, because now I will be going into high school and starting Exploring Creation with Biology.
COMING SOON: A detailed review of this course on my blog. Visit kaylasnotebook.blogspot.com to see it.
