So much more than I expected it to be... I'm trying to skim, but so much is so interesting! My edition 2015, so of course there's a lot that's different about fees, accessibility post-Covid, etc. I definitely skipped the text in the nitty-gritty pages. But the essays/ orientation pages were fascinating, and of course I looked at every single photo! Beautiful country, could spend a month there easily just playing tourist. Probably be tempted to move there!
I found it esp. interesting to learn that the only native mammal was the bat, and the first humans only came over sometime after 800 AD. And what's this about "highly lucrative deer farming?"
Authors mentioned include Margaret Mahy, of course, and Witi Ihimaera who wrote much more besides The Whale Rider. A poet intrigues, James K. Baxter. There's an image of a stained glass window in the Cardboard Cathedral, so I need to check that out.
I 'read' this for a theme month in Children's Books group (all ages, you see) but I recommend we all explore similar books about places we don't know enough about. It's a small world, after all!
