A boy returns home to find a birthday party, he hasn't had one before, although he's done nearly everything else. Nothing much happens but the illustrations are wonderful, I love this style.
This was another Goodreads discovery that was available on Open Library. Krauss and Sendak have done several books together and this one is not their best, but it does share the charm of their other works. The main character is David, a boy who has been many places, but never to a birthday party. David wants "to have been to a birthday party," however, so he is thrilled when his family throws a surprise party for him. I love the concept of wanting "to have been to a birthday party" because it implies wanting to cross an experience off a list rather than to simply enjoy the experience for its own sake - something I think young kids feel fairly often. Sendak's illustrations are also spot-on. Even with very little text to suggest personality, David comes fully to life in those pictures.
This books is about a boy who had never been to a birthday party but had been to many other places but he really wanted to go to a birthday party for his birthday. He is sad and decides to create his own party but then his mom surprises him and all of the people there to say happy birthday to him and he gets a birthday party.
This book is one that involves problem solving, this boy goes out and makes his own party cause that is what he wanted. So if you have your mind set on something you don't have to rely on others to do it for you.
Beginning Reader: This book was really cute. I loved the illustrations, they were kind of vintage looking. I also liked it because it seemed to be a relate able topic for younger children.
