A ghost town submerged beneath Atlanta's famous man-made Lake Lanier reportedly lures victims to a watery grave. But when Lacey Montgomery's car spins out of control and hurtles into the depths of the icy, black lake, she awakens in the arms of a handsome stranger, in a place she’s never heard of—thirty-four years before she was born. When the 2012 lawyer tangles with the 1949 hunk, fire and ice swirl into a stream of sweltering desire.
Bobby Reynolds is smitten the moment the storm-ravaged woman opens her eyes. Learning the truth about her origins does nothing to stop the passion from taking root in his heart, and leaves him torn between finding a way to return Lacey to 2012 or convincing her stay with him.
The desperation to find her way home dissolves as Lacey falls in love with a town destined to be submerged, and the man who vows to protect it. Will the couple be able to discover the key to a mysterious portal before time rips them apart? Or will their star-crossed spirits wander forever through a ghost town buried beneath the lake?

This is the first book that I've read by Casi McLean and I believe the first that I've read about time-travel. I'm thinking that I'm wrong about that though ...
Before sitting down to write this review, I really scoured other reviews to make sure that I wouldn't leak a secret that would really ruin the book for someone. This was not a fun task ... I absolutely hate reading what someone else thinks of a book right before I write my review, I don't want their thoughts to sway what I think, you know? Anyhow ... I ended up writing down my thoughts and then taking out spoilers. Worked out pretty well, I think.
Okay ... it's no secret that this book is about time-travel. It's all over Goodreads and it's not something that everyone is keeping quiet. I'm a-okay with the idea of time-travel. Buuuutttt ... when the story jumps from 2011 to 2012 to 1949 ... it's a bit much. I almost got whiplash just trying to keep up with the times. The switching was so confusing at the beginning of the book that I almost put the book down a few times. It just really stole something from the book. I wasn't able to completely immerse myself into the story because I never felt like I was on steady ground because of the disorienting time changes.
The meat of the story was good but then again, there was just so much going on that I couldn't fully enjoy the crux of the whole book. For it to read as slow as it did, you wouldn't think that there would be too many things going on. There was a lot of inner dialogue and explanations that were a little too lengthy for my taste.
When you mash the POV flip-flops, the time changes, the slowness and the amount of plots and sub-plots going on ... it just didn't end up well for me. I wanted to like it and I did at some points of the story but those times weren't frequent enough to redeem the entire book for me.
Also, at the end, there were quite a few typos. They came out of nowhere! There weren't any at the beginning of the book and then I'm on my last few pages and BAM! Typos. It was so weird and almost as if someone was editing and then chunked a deuce, said f-it and walked away ten pages from the end. Very strange.
Not the book for me but it's a sweet story. Quite a few people have enjoyed it ... apparently, I'm the mutant at table 9 on this one.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads, so here is my review. I love time travel, I think if it were possible I would love to travel back in time. But for now I will continue to read this type of stories instead. Lacey Madison Montgomery starts out in 2012 going to a ritzy party her best friend Piper is having, and she hates parties. Turns out after she gets there, she seems to be having a good time, that is until she catches her boyfriend in the arms of another woman. Lacey leaves after throwing a vase of flowers on Cole and his "date". She runs to her car and a storm has started with heavy rain and lightening. After she realizes that she should have stayed at the party, she turns around but can't remember how to get back to Piper's house. When she skids off the road and down a ravine. She tries to climb out but someone grabs her and she fights, hitting her head and falls into the lake. When she wakes up the next day she is bruised from head to toe, a gash on her ankle and a big bump on her head. There is a man standing over her and he seems different. Not just that she can trust him, he speech, mannerisms, his car. It's all different. When she sees the date on the newspaper, she nearly chokes on her food. It is November 6 1949. How is that possible? While Bobby and Maddie become closer, his sister Sandy becomes the sister she has never had. She is finally finding love she has never known before. After a year with Bobby and Sandy does she even want to go back to the future? Then something happens and her world is blown apart again. Will she ever be whole again? Can she get back home? Can anyone help her? Why was she sent back in time? This story is full of suspense which you will think the story is going one way and it goes the other, history, romance and a love across time. This is a first for me from Casi McLean and I am looking forward to reading more from her.
I don't believe I have ever read about a time travel romance before and I have to say this was very good.
After catching her boyfriend in a compromising position, Maddie leaves the party. The rain is pouring like crazy outside and her car skids and she loses control. Her car plummets off the side and towards the lake below.
She crawls out of the car and tries to make her way up the side, slips and begins to descend down the side.
She wakes up the next morning black and blue from head to toe and to s handsome face leaning over her. The man who has rescued her, Bobby.
He is very nice, almost creepy nice and the way he talks is odd. It's not until she sees a newspaper at a diner, that she realizes why. Somehow during the night she had traveled back in time to the year 1949.
My thoughts were all over the place with this book and I had a difficult time compiling my review.
I really liked the story and the characters in Beneath the Lake but struggled with the execution. There were parts where I was really pulled in and others where the story line dragged a bit. At the beginning, after a really good start, it seemed to get a little choppy with the back and forth between past and present. (Of course, present is relative when you are talking about time travel.)
What I liked: I liked how the author developed the two communities of past and present and developed the characters in both timelines. The story line of how the lake front community was created and what happened to the town that Bobbie (our H) was from was really good. How Lacey/Maddie goes back in time and develops relationships with people from the past was also really good. I liked the characters of Bobbie and Maddie together, although I got frustrated with her inability to communicate.
What I struggled with:
When the book is in Maddie's (aka Lacey) perspective the story is written in 1st POV whether she's in current or in the past. When the book is not from Maggie's perspective the story is written in 3rd POV. I prefer 3rd POV as I feel 1st POV has to be done really well to work and I really don't like when POV jumps around in a book - for me it makes it a really choppy read. So I was disappointed that the author chose the jumping POV format.
Lacey/Maddie was supposed to be an attorney but she wasn't really able to communicate well which made for some character disconnects for me. Also as the book was written in her 1st POV, she never sounded like an attorney with an upper crust background. When she's in the past she struggled with saying modern day slang and didn't understand some of the comments made by others. However, she was a defense attorney, law school background, upper crust background so I find it hard that she struggled with not using modern day slang. She would have used proper English in courtroom and in litigation documents so not using slang shouldn't have been an issue. These elements felt more contrived than real for the character they were supposed to be portraying.
The book also tends to give main characters two different names depending on whether they are in the past or in the present. With Lacey/Maddie, the book is up front with one character/two names. But with a couple of others the book created a mini "mystery" even though the reader can guess who they are so the "mystery" seemed a little over the top and for me it was a little too much.
In trying to keep the "future" a mystery, the book simply provided a synopsis of what happened at the end of the story. I think this was a big miss.
I’ve got to start off by saying I usually stay clear of time travel books. I’m so glad that made it on my reading list as I really enjoyed it.
Lacey is running from a party after getting her heart broken. The weather isn’t good and her car skids off the road taking her into a lake. After wakening up she finds a strange man but it gets even stranger when she realises she’s living in 1949.
This book surprised me in how much I enjoyed it. Once I got into the swing of point of views and different times I really enjoyed it. I do believe no matter what the genre is if a story is told well people will step out of their genres to try something different. This is one of those kinda reads. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.
First, can I gush a little about the cover? LOVE it! Sweet but menacing at the same time. I'm not sure that's how I picture the hero, but the artist got the heroine so right! Okay, on to the story...
I love time travel novels, especially when they offer something unique. In Beneath the Lake, author Casi McLean gives readers a new and interesting twist with a novel that shifts back and forth to give us different perspectives on events through time as they happen "simultaneously."
The book starts firmly in the present, or so the reader thinks. Lacey Madison Montgomery is an Atlanta lawyer with some pretty big chips on her shoulder when it comes to relationships. The final straw comes when she finds her boyfriend in flagrante delicto with another woman at a benefit ball. She storms off into the night and crashes her car, sliding into the lake and losing consciousness.
She awakens in 1949, in the arms of a handsome stranger who helps her get her bearings and stirs feelings she'd given up on long ago. He also seems to live in a place that no longer exists, having been flooded to create a man-made lake in Lacey's present, adding to the miscommunications between them. As I mentioned, she has some issues to work through, but 1949 seems to be the perfect time and place for her to slow down and figure out what she wants out of life and love.
Bobby Reynolds is handsome, polite, and his every innocent touch fills Lacie with heat and longing, although the author keeps the storyline PG-13, with sizzling kisses and closed bedroom doors. A WWII veteran, Bobby is the consummate gentleman. It's obvious to the reader, if not to Lacey, that he soon falls head over heels for this gal from the future.
This is not a fast read, as the chapters zips between present, recent past, and the long ago past that Lacie finds herself stuck in and not wanting to leave. The author also shifts between the first person POV of Lacey's perspective to third person narrative to give the alternate timelines.
All in all? A different take on a time travel romance that kept me turning pages well into the night. A really interesting story and solid read from a new-to-me author. I recommend this novel and look forward to seeing what Casi McLean writes next!
I received an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review. And I honestly loved it.
I couldn’t put “Beneath the Lake” by Casi McLean down. Warning! If you don’t have time to sit down and read, don’t pick this book up. Seriously, it grabbed me from sentence one and you won’t want to put this book down and go back to work.
Innocently, Piper invites her best friend Lacey to a party. At the party, Lacey finds her boyfriend Cole in the arms of another woman. Dashing from the party, she rushes out into a storm and ends up crashing her car.
It’s when she wakes us her journey begins. It’s a voyage beyond one’s imagination. Lacey has always had issues with trust and love, stemming from the death of her mother. She seems to constantly pick the wrong man. Cole quickly becomes a bad memory when Lacey meets (again?) her true soulmate.
I really don’t want to say much more about the story for fear of ruining it for the reader. Suffice it to say, Lacey goes on a fantastical trip, bringing the reader with her. I will say however, it’s history in the making.
Can I give it ten stars? Most reviews are up to five stars, but it’s not enough for this book. Casi has such amazing talent that I’m breaking the mold and giving her 10 STARS. I absolutely recommend this book!

I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.
I'm very glad I did. This book is a time travel romantic suspense - a genre I've never read before. It was an utterly captivating read. I couldn't put it down. The author does a wonderful job of hiding the true motives and intentions of the characters involved until it all works itself into an intricately solved puzzle at the end.
The descriptions are so vivid the setting becomes an integral character in the story. Sidney, Georgia is the main location throughout, but due to the story taking place in both 1949 and 2012, this set piece stays fascinating from beginning to end.
The love story between Lacey/Maddie Bobby/Rob is beautiful, heartfelt, and at times, gut wrenching. The characters are so well developed they feel real, like someone you'd love to meet.
The author has clearly done her homework on the 1940s and 1950s, and her knowledge shows but only when necessary to forward the plot. I'd definitely recommend this book to fans of romance, suspense, time travel, sci-fi, or anyone who just loves a really well told read. I'll definitely be reading more of Casi McLean in the future.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A series of (orchestrated) events come together in a perfect storm to hurtle Lacey Montgomery into the past, where she meets the love of her life; unbeknownst to her, she'd already met him at a party earlier but doesn't quite recognise him because she has yet to go back in time to meet him.
Confused much, yet?
'Beneath the Lake' is a paranormal romance story with all the ingredients of suspense and mystery, wrapped up in a whooping blanket of syfy-induced time travelling and its consequences.
My head hurts already, just thinking about the time travel paradox and the contradictions that must already be there. That aside, Casi McLean delivers a pretty decent read that's undoubtedly atmospheric and engaging, even if the first person narration seems to lack the sophistication of the voice I've come to expect of a grown woman who's an attorney. My attention was expertly steered in the direction of the hints and clues given because of (and despite) the confusing narrative segments of different time periods. Even so, I was left scratching my head at the believability of the entire time travel plot.
This is going to be a difficult book to review without giving away major spoilers! I had a very different idea of what was going on in the beginning of the book than what it turned out to be. It was a surprising plot twist that was nicely done. But, since it's no secret the book is about time travel, I will say there are some mind-blowing moments. I listened to this on audible, and I played back a few scenes to appreciate how the pieces all fit together...it's a complicated plot, but the author does an outstanding job of allowing it to unfold and then solidifying the entire concept so it makes sense. Plus, it's clear a lot of research went into the 1950s timeline. I enjoyed how Bobby spoke, his confusion over modern terminology, his endearing personality, and all the references to the current events of the past. The relationship was allowed to develop over time, and these two star-crossed lovers refused to give up on each other, despite the overwhelming obstacles. Descriptions were vivid, and I got chills when I initially heard the details of the lake's history and the hidden world beneath. Recommended for fans of time-travel, romance, and suspense!
I'd like to bring to your attention Casi McLean’s newest release, Beneath The Lake. The story is a charming tale of time travel, suspense and the power of true love. I would not be surprised to see this novel thrusting Casi into a movie production. In one sweeping effort, she stirred together the magic of time travel, a riveting mystery, and a star-crossed love affair for the ages.
Her writing captures your interest from the first page and holds you captive with mesmerizing, page-turning compulsion, and a surprise twist ending that will linger long after the book is closed. Luckily, two more books in the series are on her docket.
If you are looking for an absorbing story, order a copy of "Beneath The Lake” and be prepared to set aside enough time to finish the whole book in one glorious read.
*I received this book free for an honest review. I have no personal connection to the author.* Beneath the Lake is a time travel romance. It targets all age groups and has a heat level of sweet, (just a hint PG13). I’d like to be professional and tell you about the plot, characterization, etc…, but the only words that come to mind are HOLY COW! This story has it all. It’s the kind of story other authors are going to enjoy reading – and probably be inspired by. It’s a story that will stay with any reader for a very long time. I would go as far as to say, it’s the best book I’ve read in a long time. And, to top it off, it’s the author’s debut novel. If this is how she starts, I can’t wait to see where she goes from here. To wrap it up – I’m BLOWN AWAY!
(Review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)
If you enjoyed the movie The Lake House (starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, 2006) then you'll absolutely adore this novel. Two destined souls, from two different time periods, united (or reunited in their case) through a chain of events. Like the movie, it was sweet, romantic, and had a HEA.
But the story doesn't end when the soul mates find their way back to each. No, Casi had a couple more surprises up her sleeve which kept me engaged to the very end. I truly believe it'll have the same effect on you.
I don't normally read 'romance novels', but this one is quite good. Not a lot of bodice ripping stuff... and no bedroom scenes... a good story, some loose ends, which I expect the follow on novels will address. Well done.
Unlike anything else I've ever read! Suspenseful and entertaining, was hard to put the book down once I started reading. A brilliantly written, extremely original plot that never leaves you bored while reading. 100% recommend!
I won this book from goodreads giveaways. I loved this story , it brings together the present and the past . Totally loved the ending . I will be sharing this book for others to read.
Lacey has been blown off by her boyfriend again. Her friend convinces her to come to visit and go to a party she's hosting to get her mind off things. She does so and finds her boyfriend with somebody else. Devastated, she takes off and winds up in a horrible accident that puts her back in time. All the way to 1949. In a city that no longer exists in her time.
There are so many things I want to talk about that I don't know where to begin. I also won't be able to cover everything without making this a book. I really enjoyed this book. I want to start there because I do have a few criticisms of the story itself. The first thing is that 2011 keeps getting brought up but the "present-day" was 2012. I'm not sure if I missed something or if there was a mix up with years. The second real big issue I had is the series is classified as Lake Lanier Mysteries. I haven't seen a mystery in the series so far. A bit of science fiction, but no mystery. Maybe it comes later in the stories. Other than those things, the story was amazing and I absolutely loved it!
I'm not going to lie. I didn't like Lacey at all to begin with. I didn't really get enough of a glimpse of the rest of the characters besides her and Bobby to give a full opinion. Maybe that will happen later in the series as well. She's been hurt. I get that. It's no excuse to paint everybody with the same picture. There was a conversation that happened that irritated me because she misunderstood but I also feel like she was to blame for the misunderstanding. She steered the questioning and didn't even consider that the girl didn't understand what she was asking. Didn't stop to explain or anything. She changed as time went on, but still. It stuck with me.
This book was narrated by Aundrea Mitchell. She sounded so much like Hollie Jackson it was insane! I almost wanted to research to see if they were the same person using different names. It happens. Authors do it quite frequently. Anyways, I promise this is a high compliment. Jackson is one of my favorite narrators of all time. As the book went on, I didn't hear the resemblance as much, but I still very much enjoyed the narration.
I had some criticisms about this book. They may be based on my preferences and misunderstandings or they may be founded. I'm not really sure. They didn't take away the enjoyment of the book. I thought it was creative and thought-provoking. I wouldn't consider it a mystery, but that isn't a bad thing. I look forward to listening to or reading the rest of this beautiful series!
So, I have this tendency to buy books on a recommendation and then read them a week or more later. This has the side-effect that I’ve often forgotten what it said in the description by the time I come to read it, especially as I invariably have a lot of books in my to-read list. Sometimes, that means I get a surprise when a book isn’t the genre I thought it would be.
In this case, this had the effect that it wasn’t at all clear to me that this was a time-travel story, and could entirely have been a crime thriller or such; the wording was clearly intentionally ambiguous throughout. Notwithstanding the description making it clear that there is time travel at hand, the book itself avoided confirming it, gave no indication of anything paranormal going on beyond that one little thing (of waking up in the 1940s, far enough from the bulk of civilisation that it could have been a complex trick), and gave many hints that the male protagonist may be a con artist at best, something much less savoury at worst.
However, as things go on, the more things and people present make it difficult to believe it’s a trick, yet the occasional dips into the present-day goings-on make it difficult to believe that it’s not all an elaborate and well-planned ruse, painstakingly researched and actuated.
Anyway, I can say the writing is excellent, there’s a great deal of detail that’s gone into the historical aspect of the novel, and I really appreciate that. The mystery unravelling is also splendidly done, and it took me until the start of the denouement to understand what had been going on the whole time.
All in all, a great book well-written, and I highly recommend it.
The premise of Beneath the Lake is as mysterious as it is poetic: It assumes the existence of a crack in time, through which characters from different eras may stumble thru and fall in love with each other. This love seems to be inevitably doomed. To sustain it, one or both characters must step away from everything they know and sacrifice their chance of going back to their own world. There is an inescapable feel of disorientation, waking up to an unfamiliar time and place.
When Lacey Montgomery runs away into torrential storm and her car hurtles into an icy lake, she finds herself in the arms of a stranger—the handsome Bobby Reynolds—in a place that is unfamiliar and a time that is simply impossible: a generation before her birth date. He is torn between finding a way to help her return to her own time and wanting to hold her with him forever.
“There’s a hidden code on the northern shore of Lake Lanier where two star-crossed lovers guard the portal that entwined their souls forever beneath the lake.”
Five stars.
Disclosure: I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.
So, Beneath the Lake was my first Casi McLean novel, first time travel romance too and i gotta say, I really enjoyed it, I like to try new genres when I’m in a book funk and this one definitely bought me out of said book funk. It starts 2012 at a party thrown by Laceys friend which ends in heartache and Lacey leaving in a storm, crashing her car in, stumbling into the Lake and waking up 1949, where she meets the man of her dreams Bobby, the jumping back and forth was a little confusing at the start and this is probably not a late night read as you need all your wits about you to follow the timeline jumps, twists and turns in the plot. It was a very beautiful love story though, although I felt for Maddie and bobby in the end they got their son back but they missed such a huge part of Drew’s life, that was sad but I guess they were just happy they got to see him in the end. Would recommend this book to lovers of this genre
Great read! I thoroughly enjoyed reading the time travel back to learn facts I didn’t know about Lake Lanier. Especially since it’s right around the corner from me! I highly recommend this book if you like a well balanced amount of history, suspense, love and mystery. Can’t wait to read the next two!
I enjoyed everything about Beneath The Lake by Casi McLean. I like a story I can sink my teeth into, and this book provided that. The multiple time lines running through the story kept me on my toes. The characters are well-drawn and interesting. The plot moved along at a nice pace, and I was thoroughly engrossed and left guessing right to the very end. This is a great read!
Beneath the Lake by Casi Mclean is a paranormal/timeslip romance with elements of suspense in which lovers weave their destinies across three time periods to be together. The story begins in suspense as a mysterious man slips forward in time and is resolved to reinvent himself and to target Lacy. A year later in 2012, we are introduced to Lacy, a lawyer, attending a party where she finds her longtime boyfriend cheating on her. Enraged, she leaves the party in the midst of a raging storm and her car crashes near a cursed lake where there was once a town and people vanish without a trace. Tracy falls into the lake and time slips back to 1949 when Bobby finds her injured near the lake. As their relationship evolves into something deeper, Lacy faces the risk of losing him if she unexpectedly travels forward in 2012. All of the narratives in the various time periods tie together for a riveting climax with unexpected twists.
Author Casi McLean masterfully weaves the narratives of a mysterious man targeting Lacy at the beginning of the story and Lacy finding herself in the past. It is an inspirational story in which Lacy not only finds true love, but she also finds her purpose by helping residents in the small town negotiate prices for their properties before these are covered by the lake for flood control. The author nimbly juggles the narratives and time periods, keeping the reader in suspense. What I like most about the novel is the fast-paced beginning that hooks you and the compelling ending that ties everything together. For romance readers, the development of the relationship between Lacy and Bobby, an alluring blue-eyed hero, is the centerpiece of the story.
I highly recommend Beneath the Lake for readers who enjoy reading paranormal romance with elements of suspense.
A great time slip novel for those who enjoy time travel set in historical settings. This novel-audio is set where Lake Lanier in Georgia will eventually be. Beneath the Lake is not only historical, it is full of drama & suspense. This is the first of many books in the series. It is a bit confusing at the beginning as to who was who and who was where but that was half the fun. Enjoy!
