Another masterpiece from Rolls. Excellent scholarship, enchanting first-hand descriptions of Australian places and people, a humane and rational outlook, and all in some of the best and most readable prose ever penned.
Interesting book, especially as it was written over 50 years ago. The feral invasion these days doesn’t seem quite as gloomy. What happened to the sparrows and the starlings? Australia has changed markedly since then, especially in terms of farming methods, which in turn has changed the composition of the fauna. It also helps that we no longer kill native wildlife for fun, or purposefully spread vermin like rabbits.
I had been looking forward to reading this book & was glad when I could finally get my hands on a copy. It was a very informative, well-researched and entertaining look at 'pests' in Australia, particularly rabbits, and the surrounding history of pest introduction & eradication since European settlement. Definitely a book I'll be keeping on the shelf.
