"This new volume of classified paragraphs and stories from the sermons and writings oof the seventh President of the Church will take its place with the vital Church works of this Dispensation. "Continuous revelation is the lifegiving doctrine of the Church of Christ. It must be so, for constant human progress, with corresponding changes, forms the objective of the Plan of Salvation. Therefore, as need arises in an increasing Church, the Lord provides, through the duly chosen President, new revelation or further applications of truths already revealed. Communication with the Lord is always open. To supply such inspired guidance is a main function of the President of the Church. "This book contains the essential teachings and practical philosophy of President Heber J. Grant, covering the whole field of human needs and problems of the day." the Editors

Enjoyed reading this. I'm not thickly versed on the personal histories of all the presidents of the LDS Church, but what I found useful about this was seeing the humanity of President Grant woven throughout the course of his life. The bumblings of being a stake president at age 24 in a stake where he didn't live, where many people thought he was a joke; lots and lots and lots of business investments that had him in and out of debt for a good portion of his life from 20-40 years old; being a horrible singer, enduring shame for it, working on it, and enduring more jest from people who said the quest was futile; recognizing how being an only child to a widow disposed him to give up lots of opportunities to take care of his mom; and on. I found President Grant refreshingly honest, more than simply self-deprecating for humor's sake or to feign humility. As I face my own foibles, I find it helpful to see a president of the Church making the same mistakes and working to overcome similarly "unsmooth" aspects of his abilities and development.
