Cette histoire déroutante se déroule au début du vingtième siècle, avant la première guerre mondiale, et met en scène Walter (le grand-père de Walter), pilote à la Bardaf sur un Fokker F.VII, et Natacha (la grand-mère de Natacha) qui doit acheminer secrètement la célèbre toile « La Joconde » de Léonard de Vinci au British Muséum. Après quelques péripéties, l’avion de Walter s’élance au dessus de la Mer du Nord. Mais il est pris en chasse et abattu par deux hydravions dont les pilotes veulent dérober le tableau. Mais Walter ignorant la valeur de cette toile, la détruira pendant une algarade avec les bandits.

Lächeln tut Natacha nie
Das ist ein mutiges Ding, was da Autor und Zeichner in einer Pseudohistorie des Diebstahls des bekanntesten Da-Vinci-Gemäldes abziehen - ohne weitere Informationen spielt hier eine der Geschichten praktisch vollständig in der Vergangenheit, wohl irgendwann in den 30er Jahren, wenn man Frisuren und Bekleidung so anschaut. Da ist der Leser erstmal verwirrt. Respekt vor dieser Konsequenz, auch wenn das im letzten Abschnitt der Geschichte aufgeklärt wird.

Die zweite Geschichte ist eine Homage/Satire auf die frankobelgische Zeichnerschaft. Viele Kollegen Walthérys versammeln sich in einem Flugzeug, um auf einen Zeichnerkongress zu fliegen, und werden zwischendurch für einen Ferienjob gekidnapt - letztlich nutzt das Walthéry, um sie alle karikaturistisch-liebevoll in die Pfanne zu hauen.

This is one of the first cartoon books I bought as a child recently arrived in France. I had previously discovered the cartoon magazine Spirou and caught the very end of the second story in this collection of two when it was being serialised, and I wanted to read it from the beginning. Very much a childhood favourite, this book has been ready many times, hence the score.

Looking back some forty and more years on, the story and art aren’t bad at all, but nothing special.

However, the female protagonist was quite unique for the times. Not only were the stories set within the context of her work as an air hostess (rather than her job just being an excuse to land into some unconnected adventure like so many other cartoon characters who were supposedly “journalists”), but she managed to be a fully proactive protagonist, full of guile, authority, and courage, whilst remaining feminine, gentle and alluring, and not having to use violence or to manipulate men to carry out her aims for her. That is still quite refreshing to this day.

I’ll have to find more of the series at some point.

Dit album bevat twee verhalen. Het eerste is wat niksig, maar introduceert de grootouders van Natasja en Walter (oftewel Natasja en Walter, maar dan in de jaren twintig), die later terug zouden komen in het dubbelalbum 'De weddenschap'/ 'De brute broekjes'. Het tweede verhaal is ontzettend melig en vooral leuk omdat Walthéry al zijn collega-tekenaars van Dupuis daarin laat meespelen.

Ensimmäinen tarina oli lähinnä pelkkää huutamista ja räyhäämistä. Toisessa oli ehkä jotain sarjakuvan tekijöiden ja kustantajien sisäpiirihuumoria ja keskinäistä nokittelua, mikä tietysti menee täysin ohi. Ja itse tarina oli täysin päätön.
