Patrick “Trick” Stavros is a soldier in the Night Horde SoCal, and he was a soldier in the US Army, once upon a time—a sniper deployed to Afghanistan. The club recently tasked him to use those skills, and the job he did for his club weighs heavy on him, just as the job he did for his country does. He’s struggling under the weight, and he’s beginning to crumble.

Juliana Dominguez is a single mother who has just moved with her young daughter, Lucie, into Trick’s apartment complex. Juliana and Trick know each other a little, and share a mutual attraction, but she has rebuffed his advances. She knows about the Night Horde, and she wants a safer, more secure life for her daughter.

Circumstances conspire to bring them together despite Juliana’s reservations, and they learn that they share some kinds of pain and can make each other stronger. Then, just as Juliana realizes that, with Trick, she and Lucie can have the security and stability they need, and also have something even more important—real, deep, meaningful love—the consequences of Trick’s club life threaten to tear it all away.

Note: explicit sex and violence.

I was born and raised in the Midwest, but I was transplanted into the dusty soil of Northern California and have apparently taken root there. An inveterate geek and gamer, I am a fan of many things considered pop culture and maybe even lowbrow.

As a reader, my favorite genres are science fiction and fantasy, but as a writer, I've found my home in romance--or perhaps it's better to say simply "love stories." I have a yen to try other genres, too, at some point, but for now my muse wants to tell stories about lovers and families.

I write for the joy of it, and I write stories that I want to read. If others like them, too, that's just the cherry on top. I’m not interested in rules and formulae. I follow my muse and my characters and let them take me where they want to go, wherever that might be. I like big emotions, dark and light.

I like complicated characters with flaws and weaknesses as well as strengths, and I like each character’s strengths and weaknesses to be different from those of other characters. I’m much more concerned that my characters be interesting and diverse than that they be widely considered to be likable. I try to create people, not types.

Likewise, I want my stories each to be distinct from the others. Once I’ve told a story, I don’t want to tell it again. So even within a series, one of my books might be very different from the next. Some might be very dark, others equally mild.

That isn’t to say there aren’t trends and recurrences in my work. I’m drawn to certain themes and settings, and my muse has her favorite toys and tools. But I guard against those tendencies becoming a formula.

Alter ego: You look kind of grumpy. *smiles stealthily*

Baba: I'd rather look grumpy than burst into tears.

Alter ego: Well, you might be right. What pissed you off? Spill the beans.

Baba:What is it about being angry and disappointed, while at the same time feeling sorry for Trick for what happened to him? I felt bad for him, for not being able to feel…lenient, maybe? I'm not explaining myself well enough. Not feeling lenient in the context of not wanting to give this story a higher rating due to reasons despite Trick's anguish. Fact was, way too much of the plot during the last quarter or fifth of the story conveniently happened off page which gave me a feeling of frustration. It was so anticlimactic. What happened in the background had been ugly and absorbing. Some of it was rather predictable , yet the resolution was starkly unsatisfying and simplified to the max, IMO. By that I mean the lapidary telling of what happened to fix the "problem" as well as the lack of the crucial momentum of not letting me in, not letting me experiencing the showing part as well.

Granted, I didn't need to witness but there was so much more that took place off page which I needed and wanted to go through as a reader. In the end I had to spend a lot of time wallowing through Trick's misery (which will have the desired impact on many readers, I'm sure), only to notice that he overcame his extremely severe psychological issues rather wondrously--without professional help, of course. Yeah, surround yourself with people who love you and everything will pan out nicely. I tell you to what all this amounts to: I feel emotionally manipulated. It's wrong. No, let me rephrase that: It feels wrong to me.

Alter ego: Crap. I think I need a stiff drink. You mentioned something about tears…what's up with that?

Baba: I can't help it but I'm highly allergic to ubiquitous tears, weeping and crying jags in general. Basically I don't mind tears, I swear. Crying is healthy, whether it's a woman or a man who needs to shed some tears--let it out once in a while, it brings the needed relief. But, please, don't urge me to don my life preserver just so I can survive and finish my book because otherwise I'm at risk to drown in all those waterworks. *Baba hands an extra big box of tissues to Juliana*

"My God, Trick."
"Stop saying that." He yanked a white t-shirt over his still-wet head. "God has left the building."

Alter ego: I see. *sticks tongue out in concentration while writing something down on a piece of paper*

Baba: Whatcha doin'?

Alter ego: Hmm…? Oh, sorry, I was deep in thought. Me thinks that you have yet again so many issues, I'd rather take some notes, just to keep everything neat and tidy, you know?

Baba: Fair enough. Though I can already tell you that our interview will be short compared to the other one that took place a few days ago. No worries, I have no intention whatsoever to exhaust my character count this time around. *Baba is petting alter ego who's looking positively relieved*

Alter ego: I'm a bit scared to ask, but is there anything else that made you grumpy?

Baba: You're such a kind and considerate alter ego. *Baba beams*

Well, I thought it started off good and promising. Trick had the occasion to star as the knight in shining armor when he The kid was cute, Trick…well…did the trick (pardon the pun) and the story seemed to take off nicely. Until the heroine annoyed me, that is. Trick didn't even hit on her. All he wanted was to be friends with Juliana and Lucie. But, of course, that wasn't an option because Juliana wanted a quiet and secure life. No commotion, no danger. A man living the life of an outlaw didn't fit in her plans. Even if said man wanted to be their friend. Frankly, the blatant way she dismissed him aggravated me. And then, oh joy, they ended up together banging--…

Alter ego: Of course they came together to fuck. It's romance, silly!

Baba: What the heck is up with you interrupting me? Anyhoo…they came together, had a fuck and wham! I don't exaggerate when I say it's instant-love. Good grief. Seriously, once they professed their love for each other, they never passed up an opportunity to repeat it. ILYs left, right, bottom up and top down or whatever. It.Was.Too.Much.

Alter ego: *points an accusing finger at Baba* Gotcha! You look green with envy.

Baba: *cue eye roll* I won't even bother responding to your latest allegation. I wanna order a new alter ego coz you're so damn annoying. So. --

Alter ego: Hmm…didn't you just say that I am kind and considerate? Boy, you change your mind fast.

Baba: Shut up! So. If memory serves me right, I said that I would write a short review. Let me conclude it by saying that I enjoyed many of Fanetti's MC books in the past. However, it saddens me to say that Trick's story, while greatly anticipated, left me underwhelmed and is my least favorite book in the series. It wasn't a bad read by any means and I liked Trick and his background (good education, well-read, a 'thinker'). But, in my book, he didn't make a long-lasting impression on me. Also, Juliana is one of those bland and boring heroines who fits the saying out of sight, out of mind. I won't be shedding a tear over her, that's for sure. The talk about whether one is a criminal or an outlaw and the difference kind of amused me. Semantics is what I'm saying.

"(…) You once gave me this beautiful speech about how you're an outlaw and not a criminal because the reason you do what you do is moral.(…)"

To top everything off, it was too sappy for my liking. I've decided to take a short break because I'm not interested to read the next installment which is Sherlock's book. Dora is actually a character whose story I'd love to read. She's still a little bit mysterious and might make a strong female lead. This being said, I have no clue if Fanetti has any plans to write her story.

English, with its complicated and fluid syntax, was among the most challenging languages to learn.

Baba: Really? With all due respect but I doubt it.

Alter ego: Are you done?

Baba: Yep. See you next time.

Alter ego: *groans*

Baba: You can have the last word. Say it.

Alter ego: I'm looking forward to it. Not. *cue eye roll*

Baba: Did I just say you can have the last word? Let me have the last gesture, will you?

*Baba inserts invisible, specific gesture*

Use your imagination. Thank you.

P.S.
Don't forget to read Trick's Afterword.

*happy sigh* I love Trick and his non stereotypical biker ways.

I scored the JACKPOT with KNIFE & FLESH! It was AMAZING!

description

KNIFE & FLESH is the love story of Trick & Juliana. Readers briefly met Julianna in FIRE & DARK. Her character is intriguing because we only get a glimpse of her and just like Trick our curiosity is piqued.

The ‘meet cute’ was endearing.
Let me start off by saying Trick is a former sniper in the military. Up until a year ago he had dreadlocks for 10 years.
On a side note- through a chain of events, that you read about, in the previous books Trick has shaved his locks off. I will admit I’m not a fan of dreadlocks but for some reason I was super disappointed he shaved them off.
Trick’s 'meet cute' doesn’t happen with Juliana but with her daughter Lucie. They’re cute exchange on the apartment steps had me smiling. Lucie is four years old and like all Fanetti's kid characters she stole the scene.

”He was falling apart now.”
Trick’s past debilitates him… it haunts his dreams but also cripples him in the daylight. He carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. The ugly he has seen can never be undone. Along with the shouldering those burdens comes the payouts. The money doesn’t ease his mind but does the opposite. ”It was dangerous - dangerous to earn, to save, to spend.” In the midst of Trick falling apart Juliana encourages him to get help but Trick doesn’t want to burden others with his problems. In the end he relents and confides in his bestfriend, Connor. There were some bromance moments that had me laughing and aaahhh-ing. I just love Trick's interaction with everyone he loves in this book.

One thing I love about Trick is he's not your stereotypical biker.

description

”Go be strong. But do it with your hearts.”
An underlying political commentary runs through the last half of the book because of Trick's military background. The scenes were intense and heartbreaking. At one point in the story I naively thought this was going to be the first Fanetti book that didn't make me bawl. Well, I was wrong and I hope the author continues to provoke those feelings in me with her future books. I could fill a small lake with all my tears I've cried throughout her three series.

”...what it means to be a biker.”
After the story is over and you flip to the last page there is an AFTERWORD written by Trick. WOW! I gleamed a lot of wisdom out of his thoughts. Ms. Fanetti makes me want to belong to this club because each of her books incorporates the philosophies found within this piece. I’ve read the 'afterword' several times and there’s so much I want to say but will refrain to allow you to discover the reason why Trick is the THINKER of his club.

I don’t know how Ms. Fanetti continues to make each book more profound than the last but she has made a life long fan with me. I was blown away with the complexity of the story and the difficult situations both sets of characters must face. Their journey to togetherness was one of inspiring feats.

Oh yea, I had a major FANGIRL moment when I read my name in Trick’s book. It was one line and I’m sure Ms. Fanetti didn’t intentionally put it there for me… BUT I’m totally claiming it, in my mind, that it was meant for me. *lol* Maybe that minuscule mention will turn into a full blown character later on. *dreams do come true*

I LOVED THIS BOOK!

June 2020 - Each time I read this book I'm left feeling emotionally raw yet full at the same time. It's one of deep thought and introspection. It's impactful and meaningful to both the main characters, the club members, and the entire arc of the story. I love this book. I love Trick. And I love this authors thoughtful, careful, demonstrative, and brutally honest writing of this culture.

Re-read as part of the series Aug/Sept 2017 - One of my all time favorites. Raw, emotional, gritty, challenging. Trick and Juliana's story brings so much to me as a reader. Impeccable.

Knife & Flesh LIVE. Order here.

5++++ "Maybe even life-changing." Stars

There's a reason Susan Fanetti is my favorite author and Knife & Flesh proves it yet again. The depth of emotion, strength, thoughtfulness, hurt, and joy in this book surpasses the realm of a "good" book making it a PHENOMENAL book. Since the beginning of the series I've felt a strong yet looming quiet vibe towards Trick Stavros. Well Trick encompasses that feeling and so much more. Him and Juliana Dominguez will melt you, heart and soul. It's another powerfully moving Fanetti story, delivered in such a way only Fanetti can write where her characters lives are indeed changed. I'm in devoted awe of her talent with words and her continual ability to create fresh, emotionally raw tales within her MC's.

The state of play in the Night Horde SoCal MC inches forward more and more with each installment of the series. These men are outlaws, the live a lifestyle in which they believe to fullest extent and that they work to preserve because of that belief. Where Fanetti takes the forward motion of the story of the club as an entirety in Knife & Flesh was a little different compared to where she’s led us before with her plots. Pain comes as a guessing game, then an afterthought but it lances it us just as deep as being in our faces. The depth of that pain further solidifying the trust and love within the club between these brothers and their families to guide us through. More so than the plot though, Trick’s book is an exploration of his character and Juliana. Every time I read a Fanetti book, my connection comes from her great characters. Her books are driven by the fascinating characters who mold together as a couple in the most beautiful ways; the plot is just a great added bonus.

Trick Stavros is not your average biker. Not in appearance, not in lifestyle, not in mind. He’s an outlaw, indeed, he lives by a code in which he believes with his whole heart. He’s seen and done things in his life that make him cringe. He thinks broader and deeper than any other hero I’ve ever read. Profoundly philosophical, Trick’s views on the ways of the world really make you stop and think pondering the validity of what’s around us. Trick embodies everything he stands for and against. He has an easy, charming grin he uses to try and hide his internal anguish. Trick carries the weight of the world – that of his past, his present, and his future on his shoulders. He’s a broken man fending off the demons of his mind. He loves deeply cherishing the family he’s been given, needing them in such a deep way the connection is literally everything to him. When he makes this connection with Juliana the roots of his love already in place flower and grow in the most amazing way really showcasing everything that Trick is and what he has to offer. His moments with Lucie literally make you dizzy with happiness for this man who believes so much in the power of love and the connection it brings you once you’ve found it. I’m quite taken with this man as he breaks the mold of a “typical” bad ass biker creating a whole new dynamic of a character and the term “bad ass”.

As much as Knife & Flesh provides the evolution of Trick Stavros it evolves the life of Juliana Dominguez. She’s beautiful, head strong, smart, independent, and Juliana has a plan. The center of her world belongs to her little girl, Lucie. Juliana carries the weight of her world and Lucie’s on her shoulders providing a daily reminder that she needs to stick to her plan. The beauty of Juliana, for me, came from the fact that at first I didn’t realize her strength – there was something about her protection, her hesitance that I found almost cowardly as if she were hiding. I soon learned I was very wrong, she was strong, very strong – she didn’t know it yet. Juliana can be found in good company with the strongest of Fanetti women. A quick turnaround made me reflect and realize I’m drawn to her – her hesitance, her resilience, her faith, her resoluteness in the love she has for her child, her complete selflessness later on. Her stalwart patience and love for Trick when he most needs it made me all kinds of weepy. Juliana is a strong woman who finds her strength where she least expects it.

Their connection to each other draws honest, raw passion to the surface that cannot be denied. Their partnership a blanket of security even when Juliana doesn’t want to believe that’s true. Trick is in for the battle of his life, he falls into the recesses of his darkness so acutely painful to the reader. We feel the depth of his pain, the emotion of Juliana’s as they both fight for what they ultimately need. Life altering events completely change the course of both of these characters lives. Events that change the course of action for other’s characters. They’re seen in new ways. Live in new ways. Trick reenergizes the meaning the outlaw for himself and for the family he intends to build. His plight in getting to that moment is nothing short of heart breaking. But just as with any Fanetti story, you have weather the storm, find the beauty in the destruction, and rebuild even stronger from it.

All the boys are back in a big way in Trick’s story. Their President with his sage wisdom. Trick’s SAA and best friend Connor has a great moments. Demon too. And all the women as they extend welcome to a new branch of family into their fold. And if you’ve been reading along this series, which don’t read this book if you haven’t been because you need to read the whole series in succession, you’ll some very forthright, compelling information about Dora Vega.

Masterful. Boiled down, that’s what I think of Knife & Flesh. Brilliant, also. Fanetti’s writing so vivid you’re transported to Southern California engulfed in the world of Trick Stavros. You feel everything the characters do as if you’ve known them forever. The story is painful and beautiful juxtaposed in such a way you can’t put it down once you pick it up. There’s so much to say about the book I feel like I could type forever and I still wouldn’t cover it all. I cried through the last five chapters, reading through my tears of pain and triumph. There such moments of pure, unfiltered joy this author makes you take a step back remembering the hard so vividly it makes the joy sweeter than any sweet you’ve experienced thus far. And Fanetti does it every. damn. time. She’s a rock start of the MC world. The romance world. The writing world. She rocks my world with each and every book. If you haven’t read her books yet, now as good a time as any to do just that.

Favorite Quotes:
”Maybe just perfect for me, then.”
”You’re a good people.”
”He had no expectation that either Juliana or Lucie would feel the same awe that he felt, but he wanted them to see it, and to know that he felt it.”

**Reader’s Note** At the end of the story there’s an Afterword. An essay of sorts written by Trick entitled This Life: What It Means. It’s a compelling essay written in such a thoughtful, profound way only Trick could have penned. My point, is that it really takes the essence of what I think Susan Fanetti accomplishes with each and every one of her books. The freedom, love, and wholeness these characters get from being a part of the MC world. It leaves a lasting impression on the reader because of the insight and knowledge we gain into their lives. It coincides with each and every theme of each and every book Fanetti has written – not only her but her fellow authors of the Freak Circle Press. The essay is revolutionary to the understanding and the complete satisfaction a reader can get from the works of these authors.

6+ STARS

Have I mentioned before how brilliant I think Susan Fanetti is? I’m sure you’ve seen a review or two from me, alluding to the fact that I may be (just a tiny bit) obsessed with her writing. There isn’t a single thing she’s written that I haven’t fallen a little in love with. Except this book … I’m not just a little in love with Knife & Flesh … I’m head over fucking heels, over the moon, lost in love.

There’s a few reasons why this is hands down my favorite Fanetti read … (YES! you read that right. FAVORITE!) I’ll give you the shortened list:

#1. Trick Stavros. He has been on my radar since first mentioned in this series … the quiet, introspective man with dreadlocks and intelligent, bookish ways … dear lord! He is the epitome of the biker bad boy / intelligent geek mix that I yearn for. He is off the charts sexy in so, so many ways … I like boys with big ... brains! Getting inside that sexy head of his was such a wonderful treat. He is so much more than I could have ever dreamed of. And I just about died when I read that first sex scene!!! I am IN LOVE with him. Honestly, I was very worried that I was going to be mad at my husband for a long time, simply because he couldn’t live up to the dream of Trick (yes, I realize how fucked up that is … and I’m not even sorry). Trick is quite frankly my perfect man. My husband is close second. LOL

So many contradictions in him. Gentle and rough, thoughtful and physical. Strong and vulnerable.

#2. Outlaw. Have you ever thought about the definition of this word? I love how Fanetti has evaluated it and set out to reshape the meaning so often associated with the term. Some of my favorite moments of the book are in the discussion of this topic.

“I’m an outlaw. I don’t recognize laws when the people who made the aren’t subject to them, when only the powerless are subjected. I live outside that law. I live in a world with it’s own code.”~Trick

#3. Rebellion. There is such a huge political undercurrent to this story. I love when something as seemingly simple as a romance novel can make a heavy political statement without shoving it down your throat. The concepts in Knife & Flesh are artfully woven into the story-line … but I guarantee, you will be left thinking.
This is honestly what pushed this book beyond good & into fucking phenomenal territory (for me). Being an extremely opinionated and politically minded person made it easy for me to connect to this book and these characters. There is nothing more irritating (to me) than seeing an author sit the fence / play the middle / ignore an obvious topic entirely … I love that Fanetti tackles things head on, with a clear and definitive position. I feel like I was reading a lot of my own thoughts in this book … it’s no wonder I love it so damn much. HA!

"Give me a place to stand, and I shall move the earth."

#4. Juliana. Another strong female lead who lets me believe that there really are amazing women in the world … not just a bunch of designer obsessed idiots walking around, worrying more about their hair and nails than the people and the world around them. Juliana has her moments of weakness, but they are so profoundly beautiful. My appreciation for this type of heroine is immeasurable.

"I want everything to be beautiful and nothing to hurt." ~Juliana

#5. Lucie. Because Susan Fanetti knows how to write kids. They are real human beings in her stories … not just entertainment or filler on the side. Lucie is an active part of this story and plays just a significant a role as any of the adults. Real. And she’s a pretty amazing little character too!

"Surprises are good. They're like presents of fun." ~Lucie

What else can I say ... this book was beyond wonderful! I LOVED IT! I highly encourage anyone who hasn't picked up a Susan Fanetti novel, GET ON IT! But don't start with this book ... it is a series after all ... read it in order:
Strength & Courage, Shadow & Soul, Today & Tomorrow, Fire & Dark, Dream & Dare,Knife & Flesh

I've come to expect a certain degree of storytelling from this author, and she has yet to let me down. Never failing to develop complex characters that are relateable and ultimately loveable, and epic lovestories. While each book focuses on one couple, the series is perfectly weaved into a constantly evolving storyline. She creates a world that I easily find myself consumed by. Don't get me wrong, she has broken my heart - or better yet stomped all over the remains of my obliterated heart - but her stories have such an authentic feel, they stand out, they are memorable - and I LOVE that.

description

Knife & Flesh is Trick and Juliana's story. He is an ex-sniper with PTSD and current Night Horde SoCa solider. Now that the MC's dealings getting a bit darker, he is struggling with the repercussions on his already fragile mental state. Juliana is a single mother determined to finish school and provide her daughter with a happy, safe life. Trick has made his interest known in the past, but Juliana refused his advances. But life brings these two together and Juliana finds herself questioning if Trick could be the man for her. Just as things seem to fall into place, the unexpected happens. Their story is not without heartbreak, these two go through a lot - and it was painful at times, but I loved every minute. Trick was perfection, while Juliana took a little time warm up too - I was routing for them to find their hea.

"What do you want, Trick?" ...
"I want to deserve you.?

Just the Experience of an Artisan at Her Best Stars

While reading Knife & Flesh, the fourth entry to The Night Horde So Cal series by Susan Fanetti,, my mind kept focusing on a number of things.

I had this overwhelming sense this book was very personal to her.
Of course, this all was playing out in my head with no actual concrete facts to back it up...But with the current political issues and the important subject matter explored which was relatable to so many, that was my perspective.

The other thing which grabbed me throughout was the mental image I had of it all... like it was this painting which had an overlay...or like there was this very detailed painting covered with sheer tracing paper....and as I read the book, I was finding all the hidden images, bring them forth...to a type of clarity for me to take in and truly see. It was something so strong for me personally, it was breathtaking in my experiencing it.

This book had a relationship between two completely fleshed out characters... I would be remiss if I did not mention how perfectly drawn Penelope was for our Trick. She made a serious impact and the strength she had to overcome what life had dealt her was impressive. She did not sit by the sidelines in this book- she was an equal part along with her amazingly, brilliant daughter. The combination of the mother and daughter... the draw to our hearts was undeniable. I wish more characters like them were out there.

But my review will focus more on the man, Trick and how he impacted me...and how he was used. Using Trick as the vesicle to lay out exactly a freedom of thinking so clear and powerful, it was awe inspiring.
This very strong philosophical declaration of "what it all means" clearly gave me the insight of what Fanetti has been saying all along with her books...

To address all which was covered in this book would cause me to have a sore wrist from typing and wet eyes from first crying out of sorrow and then from joy. What I will tell you is this addresses issues ranging from domestic violence, divorce, family court corruption, immigration and the impact of these current wars on our veterans.

Quite a handful of subject matter for one book, right...but all of these circumstances and more were addressed, revealed, talked about and shown to us during a love story of intense emotions. Each character carried their own damages... sometimes interpreting things not intended by the person saying them...and when that happened...so much more was revealed to us about the pain and challenges the hurt person carried.

What was clear with these characters was the truth both were willing to live by...They had a core which would not be compromised and once they were on the same page...their strength together was magnificent. Yes, there were the push backs but they were presented with an understanding hand to allow a healing...

This book is serious and not a walk in the park... but has wonderful moments of joy and love. I know I really haven't told you anything specific; the blurb and other reviews can do that...Also at this point in the series...readers have a strong idea of how things can play out... which, again brings us back to the addictive quality of Susan Fanetti's writing.

There is club action throughout this and it is important to the over all series. It is also very important to Trick and his growth and understanding of his place in the world.

Fanetti gave us a man who breaks all the preconceived molds of bikers yet fortifies them at the same time. For Trick seemed to me to be a Renaissance Man with the intellect and focus for the arts, writing and creating...coupled with the warrior code of the Night Horde imprinted deeply in his soul.

So as I finish this "review", I blatantly state I am addicted to Susan Fanetti and no twelve step program or intervention will cure me.

Just finished and due to an internet war with Time Warner...my review will have to wait....I promise to deliver asap...

It's not weird or anything I'm counting down the days till I can read this...

I mean, it's only a book...

But...

A book written by Susan Fanetti about a past sniper turned Biker....
who kinda touched my heart in the last book....

So it's understandable I am on pins and needles....

Right????

6 "You’re a good people.” STARS

A truly brilliant read. This series just gets better and better. I truly don't know how Susan Fanetti manages to create these beautifully moving, uniquely heart-wrenching love stories - no two are alike and yet each bond, each connection is searing, original and breathtaking. For me, Trick and Juliana's was transcendent.

Patrick "Trick" Stavros is a thinker, an artist, a sniper, a soldier, a brother, a friend and a lover.

 photo image.jpg1_zpsmilv4zax.jpg

Juliana Dominguez is a mother, a student, a designer, a daughter, a woman and a lover.

We got a glimpse of Juliana in Con's book and she intrigued me. And Trick, I found myself falling for him also in Con's book. While he was in the background of that story, his presence was strong, steady and impressionable. Trick and Juliana's story is as beautiful and endearing as it is dark and heart breaking.

“Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.”

 photo KF_zps4bfavbmu.jpg

Trick is burdened, buried and frozen by his past and his sins. Juliana and her little girl, Lucie, is his now and his future. This story is vivid, warm and embracing the strength of the human spirit, the tolerance and complexity of the mind and the resilience and reverence of the heart.

If you're a Fanetti fan and haven't read this, you are in for one special ride.

And if you've never read Susan Fanetti, where the heck have you been? You must! And finally, if you're a goner for MC books, then this is a MUST READ.

For me, I really enjoy reading MC books. The brotherhood, the power, struggles and family of it all just pulls me in. Susan Fanetti does it best. No two bikers are alike and those that bond as best friends are often polar opposites and that's why it works. At the end of this book, she's included an essay from Trick on why he's in a Motorcycle Club -- This Life: What It Means -- Freedom. Rebellion. Family. Love.
A truly wonderful piece that encapsulates all that draws me to her stories and why these men, the Nigh Horde (Signal Bend and SoCal), are so near and dear to my heart.

How much power is too much power, further more who should wield it? Susan Fanetti asks that question in around about way with Trick's and Juliana's story. It's one thing having some vague notion about how evil and corrupt our government is with their barbaric treatment and demoralizing behaviors and quite another gaining first hand knowledge. I'm not going to blow smoke up your ass and turn one of Susan's best stories into a political debate. But the fact you can be made to disappear, tortured even killed should raise a few eyebrows.

Without warrants or charges Trick is taken, the why's aren't really important neither is his life. The fact he was once a soldier and now a broken man, adjusting to all the trauma and PTSD makes it heart wrenching.

Wow this is for sure my favorite so far in the series! I don't usually like books when kids are involved but I actually really fell in love with Julianna's daughter, Luce. I loved everything about this story and I loved Juliana and Trick's relationship together. The characters are well developed and are so relatable and go through real life struggles.

There were a few things that left me wondering and some things that I felt didn't added up but overall, I'm so invested in this series and these characters. I'm now officially caught up with this series and anxious to read the next!

5 Glorious Stars

Wow. At first, I really hate Juliana for pushing Trick the way she did. I literally threw my iPad across the room. That was how I mad I was at Jules. But I got over it. I love this book and I love how Trick is vegetarian biker. Now that's hot as hell. This book is by far have the strongest emotional connections between the Hero and the heroine. I love Trick and Jules. They are def the power couples :). Luce, also play a big role in this book. Love it.

“You can call me Lucie. Or muffin. I liked that. I like chocolate chip muffins. Mami bakes them sometimes.”

“You’re a vegetarian biker who reads Heidegger and speaks Greek?”

“With a sigh, she leaned against him. “What’s happening, Trick?”

He slid his hands around her waist and pressed a light line of kisses along her shoulder, to the back of her neck, and up. When he got to her ear, he whispered, “I think we’re falling in love.”

 She nodded. “Yeah. I’m scared."

“I know. So am I.”

“He smiled and bent his head until their foreheads touched. “Life is pain, princess.”

“I’m just bummed that I only got to wear this dress for a couple of hours. I wanted a Cinderella night.”

He grinned and kissed her cheek. “If you want, you can give me one of those sandals, and I’ll chase you around with it at midnight.”

“I love you so much,” she whispered. “So much.”

He didn’t answer, but his shoulders began to shake, and she held him more tightly while he cried.”

“She was stronger for loving Trick and being part of his family. And she was strong enough to help him finish healing and come fully home.”

First let me say I have been a die hard Freak Circle Press fan since I read the first book almost three years ago. I read and loved the SOA fan fics written by this and several other FCP authors and loved those stories also. This author was able to give me great joy with the raw, gritty realism and deep love in all of the previous books I have read.

What I liked about Knife and Flesh:
-The real love that developed between Trick and Julianna. You could feel the love that slowly built between the two even though they fought it at times.
-The sweet love Trick had for Julianna’s daughter
-The continued love and support of all the SoCal Horde members and their families
-The fact that a good man often has to struggle with bad choices they made themselves and not hang the blame for those bad decisions on someone else

At the end of the book, I was surprised that I was disappointed with this author’s approach to this book. I felt like she used her position as an author as a bully pulpit to put her own political views on many issues such as immigration, treatment of “terrorists” by the government and religion to name the most important ones that was continually brought up in the book. First let me say I fully support the right of every individual to have their own beliefs on anything. That is our inalienable right here in the U.S. I don’t read romance, especially biker romance, to hear about how wrong the U.S. government is in their application of immigration laws and treatment of “terrorist.” I read biker/MC romance for things other than political views and that would be again, raw, gritty love stories and not political dissertations. I hope that this is not the direction that this series is heading for. If so, please label the book as such so I will be warned in advance of the content.

4th book of the Night Horde SoCal series, I already loved Trick going into this book, so I was excited to read his story. He is Connor's best friend, the quiet thinker, prolific reader with a sweet & gentle heart, which is a miracle considering he was a sniper for the US Army deployed to Afganistan. The years spent as a sniper and the recent order carried out for the club have taken it's toll and Trick is struggling in the aftermath.

Juliana is a single Mother who's priority is to give her daughter a safe, happy & secure life, so that would not include an outlaw biker, right?

Susan has given us some incredible story lines throughout her series and there is a life changing event in this book too, I just think I may have given the book 5 stars if we had some perspective from Trick during the event. Still a great solid read from Susan.

1.5 stars - rounded up

Overall, the little girl steals the book.

I've felt all along that this series has an identity crisis. The last book was a 5 star read, and this one just made me angry.

There's very little of the action that most MC books usually have (even Fanetti's), so I found it basically pretty boring. This is a supposedly a 1% biker club, but they killed a couple of guys and bring it up later, go on drug and weapons protection runs, but it's just something they are doing, or did. None of the 'action' is happening currently. Even though the Horde is helping a drug lord run her guns, they are concerned about the volume and purpose, but feel stuck and unable to remove themselves from their situation. The club is decidedly split about what they are doing, but this just gets token attention... no big arguments about it and no resolution. And then, there's a bunch of political opinion thrown in, some I agreed with, some I didn't... just a boring, whiney MC book overall.

For just a straight Rom Nov it's about a low 2-3 stars for me.

This book could be totally skipped in the series and you won't be missing anything of substance because nothing really happens in the big scheme and nothing gets resolved. I don't know why it was written, unless it was to be a 'gap book' or push an agenda. Such a let down after Dream & Dare.

Am going to agree with some of my Goodreads friends, this is by far one of the best ones that Susan Fanetti has written. You can't help but fall in love with both the main characters, plus you get to see a lot of the others within this one as well. And Lucie what can you say, she steals the show.

Another great read from Susan Fanetti!

Knife & Flesh deals with the reality of PTSD and the difficulty sufferers face in seeking help. Having served as a sniper in the army, Trick has seen the low depths of humanity. Juliana, the daughter of illegal immigrants experienced the lack of humanity through being forcibly separated from her family during her teens. Both Trick and Juliana are focused on justice prevailing yet drawing on different strategies when aiding its progress.

Juliana is a paralegal, balancing study and work while raising her young daughter Lucy. Lucy’s inquisitive and amiable nature combined with Juliana’s patience provide for great family dynamics. Their cozy life takes an unexpected turn when Lucy begs Trick to help her injured mother. He obliges and Trick and Lucy bond instantly, accepting each other at face value. Juliana is wary of befriending Trick, putting aside her attraction to him through concern for Lucy’s well-being. The thought of introducing anyone remotely detrimental to Lucy’s well-being is a not negotiable option.

Trick designs and creates custom builds for the Night Horde. Enjoying Juliana and Lucy’s company and their vibrant intellect, they discover they have more in common than they imagined. The differences in lifestyle are a major hurdle for Juliana and her decision to not have Trick in their life is dictated by the impact it will have on her daughter Lucy.

“I don’t have those answers. I don’t think those are answers you can have, except in reflection. Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.”

All aspects of both Trick and Juliana’s lives are included and create a well-rounded story. Their attraction is strong based on both an intellectual and physical level. The angst was balanced although occasionally there were times when the angst was edging towards peak levels but thankfully it eased and the story moved on again.

PTSD is a subject I find difficult to read about but having it parallel to other subplots within the story eased me through it. Club life and brotherhood feature strongly and with the familiar secondary characters provided a welcome distraction. The somber and traumatic topics dealt with in the story are counterbalanced through the many beautiful and uplifting moments and I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

What I struggled with:
• Dora’s presence and influence
• Lucy’s father and his reasoning for what he did
• PTSD – a difficult condition never easy to process

What I loved:
• Juliana’s dressmaking skills
• Family time by the pool
• The UCLA library visit
• Riding with Trick
• Dora – she’s full of surprises

There's no doubt that the strength in Susan Fanetti's writing is the amazing way she gets into the heads of the characters she's created - and in particular the outwardly strong men of the Night Horde MC. Patrick "Trick" Stavros is a man of many facets, intelligent, thoughtful, kind, a deep thinker... and a killer firstly sanctioned by the US Government and then for the MC. And it's the latter that is emotionally crippling him. Susan Fanetti as usual does an excellent job getting to the heart of Trick and his struggle to put his past behind him and move on and allow love in the form of single mother Juliana Dominguez and her daughter into his life.

What I also found interesting as part of Trick's journey was the whole discussion of the difference between an outlaw and a criminal. Not a justification that I'm totally buying into but it does give an insight into the philosophy of the men of the 1% club and I guess the appeal for those who want to live on the edge of what society deems acceptable.

Another great Fanetti read.

This is my favorite thus far of the SoCal series. Demon's book is a close second, but there were just too many things I connected with in this book that gave it the slight edge. Review to come soon so I can do it justice.

I love Susan Fanetti. She just does it for me.

The MC genre is embraced by many authors. Some have a flair for it...some struggle a little. Some MC books are very romantic, some very dark, some are graphically violent but they all have that solid, strong Brotherhood theme that draws me in like a moth to a flame. What Ms Fanetti does when she writes her hero is spellbinding. She makes them so multi faceted and layered. They are all biker alpha's but these guys run deep .
She tilted her head and gave him that wry look again."You're a vegetarian biker who reads Heidegger and speaks Greek?"
"Yeah, I know. I'm a freak.I get that a lot."
"No, you're not. It's not freaky.It's....interesting."

But Trick Stavros goes beyond Greek, Philosophy reading vegetarianism. He has experienced awful things that affect him deeply but he keeps it all locked in. He is such a lovely guy who has done, for various reasons, awful things and he is affected big time. My heart hurt for Trick. I wanted to reach in and hug him. Julianna, our heroine didn't seem quite worthy of him at times. Had Trick not been such an incredible Hero, I may have been giving 4 stars because I found her difficult to warm up to. But Trick, Lucie, Hoosier and Connor sealed the 5 stars for me. Also, she did improve as the story unravelled.

Lucie is just the cutest kid. She is precocious in the true (and positive)sense. The relationship between her and Trick was beautiful.

Connor still shines through as Trick's best friend. They have some really moving and funny moments.
As he hovered over his spew on all fours, gasping, his hair was pulled back,
"I swear to Christ, I will end you if you tell another soul, in this life or the next, that I held your hair while you puked." Connor growled.

But for me the most moving moments were between Trick and Hoosier. Wow- Hooj and Bibi are just the most awesome established couple out of ALL the MC books I have read.

Susan Fanetti has ticked all the boxes with this deep and moving story. I have enjoyed every single one of her books. From Signal Bend to Night Horde, these characters will seize your heart and consume your mind. Trick really got under my skin.

So many contradictions in him. Gentle and rough, thoughtful and physical. Strong and vulnerable.

Just to say, make certain to read the afterword by Trick. It made me cry. Awesome doesn't even begin to cover it.

I really like this one in large part because I like both of the main characters so much. Trick is so intelligent and thoughtful and honorable, that he's pretty much the perfect man. And Juliana is absolutely kick ass in a very feminine way. The portrayal of PTSD feels more realistic and meaningful here than it does in most chick lit where it's more of a plot device de jour. Overall, it's a sweet story.

There is a plot moppet -the young daughter - who is perhaps more cute with fewer drawbacks (no pouting, tantrums, refusal to sleep, etc) than a real child ever could be. But she's not annoyingly so, and I get annoyed by cute easily.

One plot line, involving an ex is oddly dropped. You keep waiting for the bomb to explode, but it's just ticking quietly through the end of the story. Did the author forget it, drop a stitch, or is there a plan for a book later in the series? I'm guessing the latter.

And one big revelation is slipped in partway through the story, it's not a spoiler but rather something we hadn't known about the universe before -- the year 2021 is referred to as being several years in the past. This is not a science fiction novel in any way, aside from the fact that it's set a few years in the future. The only difference between that world and this one is that the Department of Homeland Security has gotten even stronger and more amorphous..and dangerous to our freedoms.

I assume this forward date had to happen because the internal timeline of the entire series forced it.

Wonderful book. Couldn't wait to read Tricks story and get inside his head. He has always been depicted as the quiet, thinker at the table. The sensitive, silent member of The Horde.

It was absorbing to delve inside his mind and uncover all of his ghosts and demons...and this boy has a few! I loved him.

and I love a romance that has a single parent involved, and Juliana and her daughter Lucie are just gorgeous. The perfect antidote to all the Horde darkness.

As with all of Fanetti's tales, the central romance is juxtaposed against the ongoing back story of the whole MC club. This time the impending doom that looms with the clubs involvement with the drug cartels is menacingly brought to the forefront. I couldn't stop turning the pages.

Perfection.

This was a 5 because it kept me interested and it was a sweet love story between the couple, not to say there wasn't some dark, it is Susan Fanetti after all. The dark was told in past tense and was highlighted over and not dwelled upon and not the central focus. I was a little hesitant to give the 5 star because it sounded almost like a political platform at times about immigration.

Reread 10/2020
Not connected with either character this go around, nor am i feeling their connection to each other.
