If I’m not mistaken, Joe Staton does the art duties on this book!

”Arctic Circle” starts with a submarine surfacing right into Mr. Freeze’s arctic home with his wife Nora encased in class, an Eskimo friend and a pair of polar bears. This breaks open Nora’s case.

Later explorers find the entire crew of the submarine encased in ice.

Back in Gotham an old man and his wife get robbed, but Batman and Robin take them out shortly after. Just in time for them both to go to a Children’s Hospital Fundraiser.

They say high to Commissioner Gordon and Dick asks about Barbara. Gordon tells him she’s probably powdering her nose or something. She’s actually pounding thugs as Batgirl.

Mr. Freeze kidnaps one of the guests and forces him to examine Nora’s illness. He says she’s got a couple of weeks to live and can only be saved by an organ transplant with a compatible donor. Turns out Barbara Gordon matches perfectly.

Dick is on a date with Barbara when Mr. Freeze comes in and tries to kidnap her. Only a couple of polar bears keeps Dick from preventing this. Dick follows Freeze’s tank-like truck in his motorcycle but Freeze ices the road. This slows but doesn’t stop Dick. But the sudden ice on the road does!

Gordon, Bullock and Rene are trying to trace the call to Barbara.

Victor thinks they should restrain Barbara.

”Aw, c’mon, Victor. She’s a teenage girl. what’s she going to do?”

Barbara escapes and finds Nora is a hospital bed. Victor and Belson tell her to calm down. They tell her she’s got a rare blood type that can help Nora. She’s not having it and escapes. They can’t freeze her or she’s no good to Nora.

Batman and Robin figure out the blood type angle and that Dr. Belson’s - a cryogenics researcher - has been missing for three days.

Barbara meets Koonak, a 12 year old who servers her lunch. He won’t help her get out.

Batman & Robin do some sleuthing to figure out why Belson is helping out (bad investments) and where Freeze is. Abandoned Oil Derrick five miles off the coast.

Barbara’s not becoming an organ donor without a fight. Batman and Robin catch up. Freeze and Belson try to escape, but Freeze won’t let Nora die.

Okay, I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that on an oil derrick much fire and explosions occurred.

That was a lot of fun with big movie action. 4 stars.

I’ve said it before though, if you’re going to have JOE STATON doing pencils - LET HIM BE JOE STATON! The art was exceptionally good, but it would be better if he could do it his way! 4 stars
