The Mozart of Basketball: The Remarkable Life and Legacy of Drazen Petrovic

Rate this book
Dražen Petrovic was born on October 22, 1964, in Šibenik, Croatia. Learning basketball at an early age from his older brother, Aleksandar, Dražen was a natural. He began his professional career at the age of fifteen, playing for the national team, where he began his rise through the European circuit. Known as a skilled shooter, it was not unusual for him to score 40, 50, even 60 points during a single game. While playing for Yugoslavia in the Olympics, Dražen and his team finished with the bronze medal in the 1984 Summer Olympic Games and the silver in the ’88 Games. He later won silver in the ’92 Olympics while playing for Croatia.

In 1986, Dražen was drafted in the third round (60th overall) by the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. Deciding to play a few more years in Europe, he did not come to the US until the beginning of the 1989–1990 season. Dražen, along with a handful of other players, were part of the first groups of Europeans to break into the NBA, paving the way for future stars.

After struggling with playing time in Portland, Dražen was traded to the New Jersey Nets in 1991. He would become a premier player and was considered one of the finest shooters in the NBA, averaging over 20 points a game in his two full seasons with the Nets. He was both a hero in the US as well as at home in Croatia, where his success had become a beacon of hope for his beleaguered countrymen who were enduring war in what is now the former Yugoslavia.

In the summer of 1993, after his best season in the NBA, Dražen traveled to Poland to help his country qualify for the upcoming FIBA European Basketball Championship. Deciding against flying with his team back to Croatia, he instead chose to drive there with his girlfriend. On June 7, 1993, only a few months before his twenty-ninth birthday, Dražen Petrovic died in a traffic collision in Denkendorf, Germany. Thousands attended the funeral in his hometown, and the New Jersey Nets retired his number 3. Even though his career was cut short, his passion, determination, and spirit continue to influence not only his home country, but international basketball as a whole.

I am so glad someone finally wrote a book about this remarkable man. Being born and raised in the same city as Drazen, I knew a lot about his life. However, the book covers many details about his basketball career and personal life that I was not familiar with. The author conducted in-depth research and lots of interviews with people that were close to Drazen in order to paint both professional and personal picture of the Mozart of basketball. Thank you! Thank you! So happy the book is finally written. It brought Drazen back to life. I went through so many emotions while reading it -- from being proud to be born in the same city as Drazen to struggling to accept his early death. I wonder how different Croatian and European basketball would be today had Drazen lived. Drazen has been a role model for many kids in Sibenik and Croatia and has greatly impacted my life and basketball career. His remarkable work ethic, love for the game, resistance to conformity, unbreakable confidence, and passion for excellence are traits that many continue to admire and strive for. “What would Drazen do?” is what I often ask myself when presented with challenging situation. You made us proud, Drazen! Zivot leti kapetane! Legende zive vjecno!

Jedna snazna prica o jednom velikom sportasu i covjeku bez kojeg smo svi ostali previse rano.

Heard so many times about this talented European basketball player, who challenged the status quo, been able to excel in Europe and on a launching pad to excel in NBA too. He's name is Drazen Petrovic.
Unfortunately a tragic destiny deprive the world of a unique story, originating one of the greatest "what if" of sport history.
Todd Spehr has so superbly written this book that it resembles more to a novel than to an athlete autobiography.
Even if I've read it knowing the main facts of Drazen's life, when at the car crash chapter, I was thinking "not yet, not so soon". He's definitely been able to drag me into his narration, inducing me to hope for an impossibile different epilogue.
I bow to the meticously literary researching work, not only to recreate Petrovic's world, but also the world the gravitate around him.
I started reading Spehr book because I wanted to know more than the mainstream events of Drazen Petrovic's journey.
I ended it with an inner belief, more than a "what if" thought.
In June 1993, Drazen confided to one of his best friends that Houston "needed a shooter" like him; the same team that would have benefited og Michael Jordan's basketball hiatus, winning 2 consecutive NBA titles in 1994 and 1995; to me, Drazen Petrovic would really have been the perfect addition to the Houston Rockets lineup.

**** SPOILER ALERT****

Drazen Petrovic had a beautiful jump shot. His career was incredible. So sad to see it cut short. I enjoyed learning about his love for the game of basketball. I saw the ESPN documentary, and the book gave his side of his life. Man he had a great jump shot.

I have long been a fan of basketball, but have to admit I am pretty ignorant of the sport as it is played on other continents. The subject of the book Drazen Petrovic from Croatia was a great foreign player, who came to NBA to make his mark here. His NBA story is only a part of his career, he starred in Europe for may years, (remember that his career spanned the days of the Iron Curtain when rarely if ever were foreign players allowed to come to America to play) One part of the book I wish I could research a little bit more, is that the book tells of a tour that the Yugoslav NAtional Team made in 1982 to the US to play College teams. They stopped in my hometown to play Washburn University. No mention was made of the game of course in the book, if I am correct about this then I was privy to watching this wonderful player perform when he was a teenager.
