Pony Jumpers #4

Four Faults

Rate this book
Tess Maxwell never really wanted to be a competition rider, and she certainly never wanted to inherit her sister Hayley’s difficult Grand Prix pony. But nobody listens to what Tess wants, and despite her resolution never to ride Misty again, she finds herself back in the saddle and clinging on for dear life as he continues to tear her confidence to shreds.

When her parents decide that Misty will be sold after Christmas unless Tess changes her mind, she has more to contend with than just surviving the next seven weeks. Because Hayley is determined not to let her beloved pony leave the farm, and she doesn’t care what will take to change her sister’s mind…

This entry in the Pony Jumpers series takes the unique view of Tess, a relatively peripheral character in the earlier three novels. Unlike some of Lattey's other heroines, Tess is very quiet and not competitive by nature. She loves riding but isn't much of a daredevil and much prefers hacking out rather than winning in the ring. Unfortunately, her older sister Hayley is determined Tess will inherit her incorrigible pony Misty. Throughout much of the book Misty becomes a kind of vehicle for Hayley to bully and dominate Tess. A wonderful character study of sibling rivalry as well as horses. I think this book has some of my favorite equine characters of the entire series, not just Misty but also Copper, Hayley's talented but spooky and silly horse.

Another outstanding entry by Kate Lattey! I really love this series - I love getting to know the different characters more in-depth, and I'm amazed how well Lattey is able to capture each character's voice so well - if you somehow blacked out the main character's name in each book of this series, you'd still know who it was. And I have to say that going into this one, I was a bit worried as both Tess and Hayley have not been my favorite characters, but this changed my mind. But, argh! Cliffhanger!!

I think Four Faults is my favourite of this series so far! This story is told from the point of view of Tess Maxwell, the younger sister of Hayley. Tess has lived in her sister’s shadow her whole life. She feels it’s just easier to do as Hayley wants, rather than get on the wrong side of her.

That is, until Hayley insists that Tess rides Misty, her talented but difficult to control Grand Prix Pony. Hayley can no longer ride ponies and Tess is fearful about the idea of riding him again. Read more at http://equus-blog.com/four-faults-pon...
