Kate lives in Waikanae, New Zealand, and has ridden horses since the age of 10. After several years competing as a teenager, she went on to work with horses in England, Ireland and the United States, as well as various horse jobs in New Zealand.

Kate is currently the Head Coach of Waikanae Pony Club and competes in show jumping and show hunter competitions on her Welsh Cob x TB gelding JJ.

Kate's published works include the Dare to Dream series, the Clearwater Bay series, and the new Pony Jumpers series. All of her books tie into one another, so there is always a familiar face in whichever book you decide to read next. Find out more on her website at http://nzponywriter.com

Gardening seems to work best, because I daydream about the book I'm writing while I work, but going for a walk or riding my horse works as well. Other times it helps to go for a drive, especially to a couple of specific places where the scenery reminds me of locations in the books. I had a bit of writer's block last weekend, so I drove out to a rural valley road and went for an hour and a half hike up a logging road. It was beautiful and inspiring, and worked like a charm.

Music also helps me get into the zone - I have playlists on Spotify for each book/series that help me get into the 'zone' for writing about those characters. (less)

But if I had to pick one BEST thing, it would be the opportunity and ability to convey emotions through stories by drawing readers into a world of your own imagining. Making people cry with one simple sentence - so many people have said that the final line of "Dare to Dream" still brings a lump to their throat whenever they think of it, and that makes me so proud.

In the Acknowledgements at the end of Pony Jumpers #10: TOP TEN, I mentioned that some of the ponies that I’d written the story around were inspired by real-life equines. When I decided to set the book in another country, I spent a lot of time watching videos of horses and ponies on that side of the world to try and get a feel for what the competition scene was like over there, and there were a...

The Grand Sophy by Georgette Heyer
“I shall be much obliged to you, cousin, if you will refrain from telling my sisters that she has a face like a horse!’
‘But, Charles, no blame attaches to Miss Wraxton! She cannot help it, and that, I assure you, I have always pointed out to your sisters!’
‘I consider Miss Wraxton’s countenance particularly well-bred!’
‘Yes, indeed, but you have quite misunderstood the matter! I meant a particularly well-bred horse!’
'You mean, as I am perfectly aware, to belittle Miss Wraxton!'
'No, no! I am very fond of horses!' Sophy said earnestly.
Before he could stop himself he found that he was replying to this. 'Selina, who repeated the remark to me, is not fond of horses, however, and she-' He broke off, seeing how absurd it was to argue on such a head.
'I expect she will be, when she has lived in the same house with Miss Wraxton for a month or two,' said Sophy encouragingly.”

Jonty by Kate Lattey
"I've enjoyed the whole Pony Jumpers series so far, but 'Jonty' is definitely my favourite. It was great to be able to learn more about him (he was my favourite side character form the other books anyway, and this only made me want to see even more..." Read more of this review »
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown
"I am FINALLY done with this book. It took me forever to read, largely due to the fact that it is absolutely heartbreaking. Most days I couldn't take reading it for more than 15 minutes.

That said, I believe it is one of the most important books I..." Read more of this review »

""The "land of the free" is no longer "the home of the brave.""

It took me a long while to read this.

It wasn't that it was a boring read. far from it. But it was a disturbing read, and the fact that each chapter follows virtually the same pattern ma..." Read more of this review »

More of Kate's books…
“She'd missed the way he walked, the way he shoved his hands into his pockets when he was nervous, the way his dark hair fell into his mismatched eyes. The way a smile would flicker across his face before he committed to it, the way he looked at her like she was the only person in the world.”
Kate Lattey

“Never tell her that something is impossible, because she'll kill herself proving you wrong.”
Kate Lattey, Dare to Dream

“Real is...just being you. It's not letting yourself be defined by other people's opinions of you, of who they think you are, or what they expect you to be. It's refusing to let them squash you into the box they've built for you, and just being yourself, no matter what anyone else thinks. Because you're never going to matter to everyone, just like everyone's never going to matter to you. So you choose the people whose opinions you care about, and you be real for them.”

“His mane was like a crest, mounting, then falling low. His neck was long and slender, and arched to the small, savagely beautiful head. The head was that of the wildest of all wild creatures- a stallion born wild- and it was beautiful, savage, splendid. A stallion with a wonderful physical perfection that matched his savage, ruthless spirit.”
