Heather felt humiliated when Lorenzo Martelli jilted her at the altar. She blamed his brother Renato for what had happened and was astonished when everyone insisted Renato make amends by taking his brother's place in an arranged marriage with her!
Renato was a powerful man, not used to taking orders. But he knew he was responsible, and felt duty-bound to marry Heather. She was wary of accepting such a proud, arrogant substitute husband -- only the attraction between them was overwhelming.... Could she refuse?
Christine Sparks was born in England, UK. She wanted to be a writer all her life, and began by working on a British women's magazine. As a features writer, she gained a wide variety of experience. She interviewed some of the world's most attractive and interesting men, including Warren Beatty, Richard Chamberlain, Charlton Heston, Sir Roger Moore, Sir Alec Guiness.
Single life was so enjoyable that she put marriage, and even romance, on the back burner, while she went about the world having a great time. Then, while on vacation in Venice, she met a tall, dark handsome Venetian artist, who changed all her ideas in a moment, and proposed on the second day. Three months later they were married. Her friends said a whirlwind romance would never last, but they celebrated their 25 anniversary, they are still married, still happy and in love.
After 13 years on the magazine Christine decided that it was now or never if she was ever going to write that novel. So she wrote Legacy of Fire which became a Silhouette Special Edition, followed by another, Enchantment in Venice. Then she did something crazy gave up her job. Since then she has concentrated entirely on writing romances for Mills & Boon, Harlequin and Silhouette and has written over 75 books. Her settings have been European and her heroes mainly English or Italian. Christine now claims to be an expert on one particular subject. Italian men are the most romantic in the world. They are also the best cooks.
A few years ago she and her husband returned to Venice and lived there for a couple of years. This proved the perfect base for exploring the rest of Italy, and she has given many of her books Italian settings: Venice (of course), Rome, Florence, Milan, Sicily, Tuscany. She has also used the Rhine in Germany for Song of the Lorelei, for which she won her first RITA Award, in 1991. Her second RITA came in 1998, with His Brother's Child, set in Rome.
Eventually Christine Fiorotto and her husband returned to England, where they now live. She write and he paints, they have no children, but have a cat and a dog.
I'm not a fan of triangles, so I wasn't happy with the opening. Any experienced romance reader would know right away that the heroine was with the wrong guy and thus would have to resign herself to wade through pages of scenes with the wrong guy, with the heroine just being all around wrong.
However, I persisted since this had great reviews. *waves at Vintage* and because Lucy Gordon is a closer - she usually manages to pull out at least one great scene at the end - even in her less-than-stellar stories.
Once the heroine was jilted at the altar, the whole story took an upswing. I loved the descriptions of Sicily, the heroine's friendship with her future mother-in-law, and the hero's slow burn to love. This truly was an arranged marriage in a great scene with the heroine negotiating with the matchmaker (her mother-in-law) and the hero looking on. While the H/h had insta-lust neither trusted themselves or each other to make a decision about their future. Heroine had been jilted twice and hero didn't do love because of some romance in his distant past.
Mama did trust her own judgment and knew both of them well enough to see that they would suit. The H/h were also committed to making their marriage work, which is how an arranged marriage (or any marriage, for that matter) is going to work.
The angst at the end was each wanting the other to say those three words. Hero cracked first based on a very short misunderstanding. His declaration was very sweet.
The OM, the hero's brother was a waste of space. (Drunk driving - really?) And I have no desire to read his book. Same with the half-brother and the heroine's friend. They didn't exactly leap off the page. The side romance with the widowed Mama and the gardener she loved from afar was sweet.
In WbA, she does so again. Heather meets the gentler, kinder brother Lorenzo and falls in love with his Italian boyish charm. She meets, is propositioned and investigated by his brooding older brother Renato. Renato’s proposition is a tester to see if she’s a gold-digger or not. She passes with such flying colors she’s ready to ditch Lorenzo AND Renato and has to be stopped.
She ends up in Sicily where flying in the face of just about every other doting Sicilian mama in Fictiondom, Baptista, the boys’ mama, loves Heather. In fact, she loves her so much she gives Heather her small estate that encompasses a village et al. Ah, to be a fictional heroine in Harleyland!
Long story shorter, Heather is dumped by vapid Lorenzo AT THE ALTAR with half of Sicily there. She blames it all on Renato who did strongarm maneuver L and H’s relationship despite his strong feelings for Heather. A little unfair of her, but she is mad at Lorenzo too.
Here is where we get a second glimpse of the spine of steel. Lorenzo comes in with his smarmy, cutesy, little boy apology and leaves with his tail between his legs as she is so indifferent and dismissive of him he wants her back. He even pouts that she may have laughed at him. At his comment that he might try and woo her again, Renato tries to strangle him. Still waters and everything.
Well, Renato’s little acorn didn’t fall from the mama oak tree, ‘cause Baptista manipulates Renato and Heather into the MOC they both want. Contrary to the implication in the blurb, it is does not take place right away but takes some maneuvering over weeks or months. One amusing and must-be-read scene is when Heather and Baptista have an old-fashioned MOC marital negotiation as Renato eavesdrops to his dismay. The same Sicilian high fliers are invited back and fait accompli. It’s fire works from the start although the question of love is uncertain.
More drama, of course, and emotional confessions come eventually.
The descriptions of Sicily are beautiful and the scenes when Heather retreats to her new villa and estate are equally lovely.
All in all, an incredibly well done story with more complex characters than are usually thrown at us. I should have enjoyed this more than I did, but given the writing, the fresh approach to a heroine with some pride, 4 stars.
This was so much better than the second book in the series. Renalto is a man that takes his family responsibilities seriously and wants to make sure that his younger brother is settled and ready to provide an heir for the family. He himself, has no intention of marrying...He likes the status quo of one adoring woman after another.
There is just one problem to his plan, he falls in love with his brother's fiancé. This is a fun, quick read...

sweet romance, but i found myself losing interest in the middle (especially when the h started 'negotiating' marriage terms with her soon to be m-i-l). The ending though, was special and i liked how they confessed their love for each other.
I like jilted partners stories but I just can't bring myself to finish it after the supposedly wedding of Lorenzo and Heather. It's too much for me (complicated with family affair - - in loved & jilted by the younger brother then married to eldest brother). And later I found out that Lorenzo has a book of his own. Damn... Maybe I'm missing a gold story behind this book but I can't bring myself to finish it sorry...
How long can the book be dragged out? Didn't think the couple loved/liked each other at all! And them getting married made no sense. Heroine got dumped TWICE before her weddings. Just ouch. She would be scarred for life! Hero is just a jerk face and you want him to be alone. Doesn't he have like 3 chicks he is banging when he meets the heroine? Uh, skip.
Wife by Arrangement, Book 1 of the Italian Grooms series, was about Heather (no last name?), a sales clerk in a store in London, and Renato Martelli a Sicilian businessman. Heather met Renato while at work. He had specifically asked for her, and she had assisted him with the purchase of perfumes for his mother and several of his...err...lady friends...and then he propositioned her. She turned him down, put him in his place, and walked away. After work, she prepared for her date with Lorenzo, her Sicilian friend who had the potential to become more. When he picked her up, he told her of some changes to their evening. Rather than going to the theater, they were meeting his older brother, Renato, for dinner. When they reached their table, Heather realized the man from work was waiting and she realized HE was Lorenzo's brother. The dinner did not go well, for though Renato gave his permission for the two to marry (even though the prospect of marriage had never been spoken about between them), Heather told him what he could do with his approval. After walking away from the table, Renato chased her down and their argument continued out to the street where, having told him off royally, Heather ended up nearly being hit by a car...and saved Renato's life, for he had sustained an injury while rescuing her from being run over. While at the hospital waiting to see how Renato was, Lorenzo proposed and she accepted. A month later, she arrived in Sicily to prepare for the wedding. As the days passed, a quiet bond formed between...Renato and Heather, though both chose to ignore it. But as the day of the wedding approached, the tension between them grew stronger and their mutual attraction harder to ignore. Renato, acting in place of the bride's father, would give her away to Lorenzo. But before they could make it to the altar, Heather received a note from her groom...saying he couldn't go through with the wedding. Renato and Lorenzo's mother collapsed after hearing the news and was rushed to the hospital, all fearing for her as she had a weak heart. When they were told she would survive and was asking for them, they were all relieved. After Renato's mom was released from the hospital, she began a campaign to keep Heather in the family by saying she and Renato should marry, that he needed to honor their family's commitment to Heather since Lorenzo had "dishonored" her. Though they both fought against it, in the end, they did marry, even though Heather knew he didn't love her. This was a very sad, yet romantic story. Sad, because of all the heartache everyone involved had to go through, all because of Renato's determination to see that his world moved along smooth, even paths. Romantic because he had fallen in love with Heather but was honor-bound to let her marry his brother...especially since HE was the one who forced things to happen between the two. Both of the main characters were strong, mature people who knew what they wanted in life. Neither was afraid to stand up and have their opinions heard. They were definitely made for each other. The story was full of angst and drama, but not to such an extent that they overwhelmed the other emotions that ran rampant throughout the pages. The twists and turns of the book were enjoyable and held the reader's interest to the very end. It was definitely worthy of a five-star rating and to be added to the Keeper for the Shelves collection.
A nice story written by LG. It is one of those that ambles along, tells a good story, has a little angst but never quite reaches the level of intensity that I like in a story. So although I enjoyed the story, it wouldn’t be on rotation for a reread.
The heroine Heather works in a shop in England and meets Lorenzo. Lorenzo is a charming Sicilian who has extended his stay in England to squire the h about. Big brother Renato(hero) comes in to check on the little brother and this young woman who seems to have charmed his younger brother. He decides to check out her character at the store she works at. She sells perfume. He talks about how he needs to buy perfume for several ladies and comes off as a player. There is some chemistry brewing between these 2, and she is unaware that he is Lorenzo’s brother. However, he makes a major misstep by suggesting that she too could warm his bed and he would pay her nicely. She makes sure he knows what he can do with his money and panache.
Later that evening Lorenzo takes her to meet his brother for dinner, and of course she recognizes him as the playboy from earlier in the day at the store. Over the course of dinner marriage is bandied about by the hero taking his brother Lorenzo by surprise. He has only been dating the heroine for a month. Then an incident happens putting the hero’s life in jeopardy and the brother decides he will marry the heroine. So, she quits her job and moves to Sicily where she will be married.
Of course the marriage between the brother and the heroine doesn’t take place. He jilts her at the wedding. The future MIL who has taken a shine to the heroine has a health episode and makes the heroine promise she won’t leave Sicily(the mil actually gifted the h property) The heroine loves the lady and decides to stay…for now.
Meanwhile the hero is hanging about and every-time the h and him get together sparks fly. She sets him in his place instead of fawning all over him. The MIL would like for the two to get married and the H seems amenable to the idea. So the two of them get married.
They have the passion. Do they have the love? Does the h still love the brother that dumped her? Did she ever love the brother? Can the hero get over his past troubles with love to let love in again? These are the things to cause the angst. All of these questions got answered to my satisfaction.
Things I liked in the story…. The heroine is strong. She speaks her mind and she doesn’t let herself get railroaded by the hero. The mil is also a plus. It is refreshing to have a MIL who welcomes a future dil with open arms. I mean the woman gave her a house and property before she even married one of the other brothers. There was a nice wrap up to the story and I liked the hero’s declaration of love. He was the first to say it even though at the time his heart was breaking.
There are 2 more stories to go. Bernardo, the 1/2 brother gets a story with the h’s bff, and then Lorenzo finally finds true love as well. Not sure I will read these straight away or not.
I can think of no words that could ever do justice to this perfect book. I have read no such thing before. True I have read lots that gave me such a blissful feeling, a longing for the story to keep going on but none like this pleasantly strange thing I can't quite put into words.
Every word gave me a soothing feeling, an excitement, eagerness to quickly move to the next word but then a tiny regret that I didn't do justice to it by not savoring it. Oh I make it sound so cliche but I felt every single thing I put above.
Every scene. Dialogue. Character. The flow of story. And especially the way it was written. I can never give this book enough compliments and I know for sure one thing that this book I'd never get tired of reading it over and over again.
Definitely recommended if you're looking for something sweet, kinda soft and enjoyable to read.
She had been left at the alter by not one but two men! The last one was the most angst of all. But when the older brother steps in and offers her a deal what will she do? The story revolves around the fact that he has feelings for her and needs to understand what that means. Forever or for right now?
This novel was purely delightful. I have to say I enjoyed all aspects about it and was so pleased with the ending. It was worth reading and gave me a feel good feeling afterwards. I would definitely spend the time to read it again.
This book deserves an extra star just because the heroine was a pleasant departure from the usual Mills & Boon lady lead. She was strong, spoke her mind and did not turn into a quivering jellyfish in the presence of the hero.
