Chris Claremont is a writer of American comic books, best known for his 16-year (1975-1991) stint on Uncanny X-Men, during which the series became one of the comic book industry's most successful properties.

Claremont has written many stories for other publishers including the Star Trek Debt of Honor graphic novel, his creator-owned Sovereign Seven for DC Comics and Aliens vs Predator for Dark Horse Comics. He also wrote a few issues of the series WildC.A.T.s (volume 1, issues #10-13) at Image Comics, which introduced his creator-owned character, Huntsman.

Outside of comics, Claremont co-wrote the Chronicles of the Shadow War trilogy, Shadow Moon (1995), Shadow Dawn (1996), and Shadow Star (1999), with George Lucas. This trilogy continues the story of Elora Danan from the movie Willow. In the 1980s, he also wrote a science fiction trilogy about female starship pilot Nicole Shea, consisting of First Flight (1987), Grounded! (1991), and Sundowner (1994). Claremont was also a contributor to the Wild Cards anthology series.

Finally the end of all those Mastermind hints!
Most of the story, I really enjoyed. The one part I didn’t like was how quickly Scott figured out that Mastermind was behind it all. I felt that his thought process which led him to that conclusion wasn’t clear enough for me to go ‘ok, yeah he’s definitely on the right track’.
There was also that convenient tech-wiz moment Scott had but I’m willing to overlook it this time.
I was surprised that for an anniversary issue, it didn’t really look back at previous adventures. And that was totally fine for me. The story was well paced enough that it really didn’t need those flashbacks. It also didn’t feel like a double-sized issue which I appreciate.

The X-Men are hanging out when the Phoenix appears. She drops an injured Cyclops and vanishes.
Xavier is injured by Cerebro being sabotaged and Phoenix appears to rise from Cyclops.
She decimates the X-Men and leaves again.
The X-Men move Scott to the infirmary along with Xavier and start contacting their allies the Starjammers, Lilandra and Captain America, but find themselves as the last survivors.
Scott wakes up and realizes that the X-Men are being tricked. He tries to inform them, but they mistake him for Phoenix and attack. He traps them in the Danger Room.
Madelyne wakes to Jason Wynegarde (Mastermind) who gives his villain monologue.
Scott defeats the X-Men and uses Rogue's absorption power on Xavier to inform the rest of the X-Men about Mastermind. Mastermind shoots Scott but Storm overwhelms the room with her powers, uncaring of hurting her team.
Scott and Madelyne get married.

This special #175 has more pages, a lot of action, a mystery being resolved and a big event that will forever change the X-Men.

Some mysterious power has been playing with Scott Summers (Cyclops), Madelyn Pryor and the X-Men. The power behind the various problems that the X-Men have been going through is unbelievably strong and almost leads to near death for Professor X and Scott.

In this comic, Cyclops is able to unveil the mystery but X-Men are not ready to believe him and are hunting him. Can he save his X-Men before it's too late?

What exactly is the mystery behind Madelyn Pryor and her resemblance to Jean Grey? Well, this part won't be answered in this comic 😂

Great read overall.

i absolutely LOVED this issue. 40 pages!? the Mastermind is finally taken down, and Scott FINALLY lets go of Jean after Mastermind manipulates the X-Men into thinking Madelyn is Dark Phoenix, but in actuality Madelyn is good and not a reincarnation of Jean Grey. The story ends with the wedding of Madelyn and Scott after he visits Jeans grave to tell her hes letting go. In a way it feels like a new chapter of the Uncanny X-Men

Great artwork from Paul Smith, with John Romita Jr pencilling the latter half of the book. Big epic fight, with Scott using his knowledge of the X-Men, as their leader, to overcome them. Honestly, it’s crazy to me it took them so long to realise they were being tricked, and Mastermind being the most obvious suspect and guy they have fought over and over. Lovely ending, seeing lots of old faces return to the panels for the wedding.

A fantastic story and one that finally made me appreciate Cyclops when I first read it. Cyclops definitely shines here, as his leadership and combat prowess is showcased in this story. Claremont and Smith (with an assist from JRJR) weave a good finale to their too-brief run. Paul Smith deserves all the praise he gets for his X-Men run, and his efficient lines work well for the X-Men. He draws every character well, and his expressions are top-notch, too. Recommended for Smith/Claremont fans.

Deception, Team drama, and a wedding! This issue was really fun, X-men fighting to destroy the reincarnated Dark Phoenix.

This was a crisp 4 stars from me for this severely rushed relationship arc until I saw that frame of Kitty and Peter looking at each other and remembered Claremont was on something CREEPY with that, y’all who is allowing this to be published!!!
