Family secrets threaten Brodie and Ishabel’s future happinessISHABEL STUART is at the crossroads of her life. Her wealthy industrialist father has died unexpectedly, leaving her a half-share in a ruined whisky distillery on a Scottish and the task of scattering his ashes on a Munro. After discovering her fiancé playing away from home, she cancels their lavish Christmas wedding at St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh and heads for the only place she feels safe - Eilean na Sgairbh, a windswept island on Scotland’s west coast - where the cormorants outnumber the inhabitants, ten to one. When she arrives at her family home - now a bed and breakfast managed by her left-wing, firebrand Aunt Esme, she finds a guest in situ - BRODIE. Issy longs for peace and the chance to lick her wounds, but gorgeous, sexy American, Brodie, turns her world upside down. In spite of her vow to steer clear of men, she grows to rely on Brodie. However, she suspects him of having an ulterior motive for staying at her aunt’s Bed and Breakfast on remote Cormorant Island. Having been let down by the men in her life, will it be third time lucky for Issy? Is she wise to trust a man she knows nothing about - a man who presents more questions than answers? As for Aunt Esme, she has secrets of her own . . .Reviews for Scotch on the RocksLizzie Lamb has already demonstrated that she is an expert in writing romantic fiction. Romantic Novelists' Association
Indie Champion2023

Hi, I’m Lizzie and I like writing about the ‘moment’ when the hero and the heroine fall in love. That, and trying to track down the all-elusive hero-in-a-kilt, is what gets me in front of the computer each morning. Since 2012 I’ve published six novels: Tall, Dark and Kilted, Boot Camp Bride, Scotch on the Rocks, Girl in the Castle, Take Me, I’m Yours and Harper’s Highland Fling. My latest novel, Dark Highland Skies is due to publish February 2023 and I’ve loved writing it. I organise the Leicester Chapter of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and present workshops on indie publishing to new writers. My feel good/uplit novels would be very happy to sit alongside Jilly Cooper, Jenny Colgan, Jill Mansell and Carole Matthews on your bookshelf.
I love writing because it’s given me the chance to celebrate everything I love about my homeland - Scotland, and to share those feelings with my readers. When I’m not writing, I spend summer with my husband touring Scotland in our caravan researching my next novel and avoiding the midges.

Slainte Mhath.

SCOTCH ON THE ROCKS by LIZZIE LAMB

Lizzie Lamb is a dangerous woman, her books will cause you to starve your family, make you leave your washing to get soaked on the line and your dogs go unwalked!
In a book which combines romance, mystery, true passion and plenty broad Scots humour, Ishabel our heroine runs away from her perfect if pressurised life to the remote Scottish island of her childhood. Will she settle for her errant fiancee, or will the handsome kilted American hunk Brodie, swoop her up in his arms like a selkie shedding its skin? With a mad, talking parrot, a truly hilarious funeral scene and a muckle range of eccentric characters with skeletons in every pantry, this incredible book shows why Lizzie was right to retire and pursue her dream of being a writer. This would make a brilliant film, so pour yourself a wee dram, abandon the housework and escape with Lizzie!

Another Lizzie Lamb winner! Having loved her two other books, I was excited to hear about the new addition and couldn't wait to get stuck in. I was also glad to see it was set in Scotland (as was Lizzie's first book) - it's a favourite location of mine. Well... it lived up to the hype! It was thoroughly enjoyably from the first page to the last. Starting off with our heroine, Issy, racing to her former home - the island of Eilean na Sgairbh (or Cormorant Island) with her father's ashes in tow and a broken heart. Arriving at her beloved Aunt Esme's home, she encounters tall, dark, brooding American, Brodie and well... fasten your seat belts cos you're in for a rocky ride! A cast of great characters complement Issy and Brodie, including the brilliant Pershing - a parrot with a somewhat cheeky mouth! His comic timing is epic. I won't detail the plot, you'll just have to read the book yourself, but suffice to say I like my heroines strong and self-sufficient and that's what you get with Lizzie, none of this simpering business, they know their own minds and lead the way... all the way! Yep, there's some pretty saucy scenes in here too (Mermaid Rock, ooh la la!), all of which are very well done. A great summer read, grab yourself a copy, head to the nearest sun lounger and devour!

From the outset we know we're in for a fast-paced ride as Ishabel Stuart dashes home to Eilean na Sgairgh (Cormorant Island), the setting for Lizzie Lamb's wonderful third novel. So why 'wonderful'? In Scotch on the Rocks we meet a cast of fully rounded, interesting characters whom it's easy to like and care about. From determined, hurt Ishabel (Issy) to the mysterious romantic hero, Brodie, we are swept along with sparkling dialogue and an intriguing storyline, all set against the stunning scenery of Scotland's western isles. And then there's Pershing the parrot...a witty, fun 'character' in his own right! A highly recommended romantic read from Lizzie Lamb.

From the first few lines of Scotch on the Rocks we know exactly the kind of character we are meeting in heroine Ishabel Stuart. Brave and intelligent, her single minded determination could achieve anything but she may well antagonise anyone who crosses her path. Returning to her home island in the Scottish Highlands she is seeking peace and a new life after the break down of her engagement.

But first she must arrange her father’s funeral and she is not best pleased to find her Aunt Esme’s B and B brimming with guests. The guests depart, sadly taking Esme with them but Issie still has to deal with the unwanted presence of a tall, handsome, charming American. Why is she so rude to him and what is he hiding?

On the face of it, we have the recipe for a sweet romance as conflict gives way to love but Lizzie Lamb’s books offer far more than just that. Mystery builds up as to why Brodie has come all the way from Kentucky to stay for the entire summer. Parallel to this we wonder why Issie’s father and Aunt Esme had been estranged for so many years. The more we learn, the more it appears that any relationship between Brodie and Ishabel is doomed.

And then there is Lindy, or Lola as she is calling herself that week, a zany, madcap young lady who helps out at the Guest House. Lindy longs to escape Cormorant Island and she sees Brodie as her passport to Las Vegas. Adding to the hilarious household is Pershing the Parrot, a cantankerous, vociferous bird who makes helpful remarks such as, “You silly tart!”

The beauty of the island landscape and the colourful characters living there make this novel a pleasure to read. There are several incredibly funny scenes involving “ladies of the parish,” or Issie’s mother, an “Italian” Diva (well Dumbarton actually!). The blunt description of Ishabel’s cheating ex-fiancé are refreshing to read and this is very much a contemporary story even though set in an idyllic location.

The love and passion experienced by more than one couple is intense and explicit and no-one would doubt the inevitable matching. But in addition, a 50 year old wrong is righted and mysteries solved in a very unexpected conclusion. There is something for everyone in Scotch on the Rocks, including the bottle of Scotch!

Scotch on the Rocks is a wonderful romance set on a small Scottish island. Pull up a chair by a cosy fire and dive into this tale of love lost and found.

It opens with a daring dash across a tidal causeway by Ishabel Stuart to the island of Eilean na Sgairbh or Cormorant Isand. With her father strapped safely in the back seat she has just minutes to make it before the sea engulfs the only access to the island for another few hours.

Gunning the engine and with the water lapping at the wheels Issy is desperate to make it to the safety of the island and the waiting arms of her Aunt Esme, where she can lick her wounds and hide from the world. But much to her dismay Esme has a full house and is herself just off to one of her activist protests. Issy is left still full of her woes and on top of that there is a paying guest to accommodate.

For Issy the island has been a family safe haven, here the family once owned Stuart's Twa Burns whisky distillery and Issy wants to give back something to the island and its inhabitants. She's given up her job, and intends setting up artist workshops.

Stuck with Brodie, the American guest, she finds him annoying and intriguing, what is it he's not telling her? And why does he have a tattoo of the McIntosh clan?

Lizzie writes with great passion and her characters feel like your best friends, from Lindy, Issy's best friend who tries to win Brodie's heart, to Pershing the talking parrot whose choice of words add so much to the tale. I also had a real soft spot for Aunt Esme, who, although "off set" for much of the storyline was there in so many other ways.

Feel good romance in a wonderful Scottish setting with Gaelic charm and a dram or two of whisky.

Ishabel Stuart was born on Cormorant Island, off the coast of Scotland. When her city life goes into meltdown she returns to her roots, coming home to the property now owned by her aunt, Esmee. Unfortunately for her, Esmee is just heading in the opposite direction to join one of the protest camps that have been her lifelong passion, leaving Ishabel in charge of the sole remaining occupant of the guest house – Brodie, a ridiculously good-looking, wealthy American hunk. Let personality clashes commence...
As someone who lives part time in Scotland, I was drawn to this book by the setting, rather than the plot, but was delighted to find it an absolutely charming read, with wonderful atmosphere and great dialogue including portions of totally authentic Scottish dialect. There is humour (Pershing the parrot is hilarious), romance, more than one mystery to be solved, and the sort of outrageous characters that you really meet in this kind of small community.
About the only thing I found hard to swallow was how utterly too-good-to-be-true Brodie remained throughout the book. He was a saint, considering the sort of behaviour he was subjected to, and not just by Ishabel. Where can I find this paragon? I want him!
Highly recommended for lovers of Scotland and romance, with an intriguing touch of mystery.

Lizzie Lamb has already demonstrated that she is an expert in writing romantic fiction. She creates believable main characters who fall in once-in-a-lifetime love; she devises imaginative and unusual conflicts and tensions that threaten to keep the lovers apart; she develops a rich cast of supporting players who help and hinder the resolution to the lovers' problems; and she describes fascinating and beautiful settings in which their story unfolds.
Miss Lamb has done all this again in Scotch on the Rocks, another lightly comedic tale of love and romance set on a beautiful, remote, isolated Scottish island.
The plotting in this novel is really clever with many surprises on the way. Scotch on the Rocks keeps you turning the pages and wondering what's going to happen next.
The dialogue is particularly good in Scotch on the Rocks. It's sparkling and vivid, sharp and witty. There's a lovely Scots voice for all the indigenous characters enhanced with the musical, poetic tones of Gaelic.
No doubt about it: Lizzie Lamb has excelled with Scotch on the Rocks. A five star romance from a five star romantic novelist.

Highly Recommended!

I loved this book so much I had to force myself to put it down or Christmas might not have happened!

Whisked away to a beautiful and beguiling Scottish Isle, where our heroine Issy has fled her love-rat fiancé to carry out her father's last wishes, we are treated to a cast of intriguing and delightful characters whose lives and loves form the backdrop to this fascinating tale. When Issy's 'placard carrying' Aunt Esme disappears to fight yet another cause, she is forced to reside in very close proximity with Brodie, a handsome American, with his own agenda. Add the mystery surrounding the family's ancient and now defunct distillery, her Diva mother and Pershing the Parrot and it's a blend to savour!

A real page turner, sexy and funny and not to missed. Highly recommended.

Another cracking romantic comedy from the pen of the very talented Lizzie Lamb. When Issy catches her so-called fiance with his pants down, she flees to a remote Scottish island where she knows she will find sanctuary. What she is not prepared for is the immediate physical impact the American visitor, Brodie, has on her and the island. What on earth is doing on this remote Scottish island? And exactly what is his interest in the family's distillery, now in ruins? As with all Ms Lamb's books, there's more to this novel than the interaction between Issy and Brodie (though that sizzles). There's a lovely assortment of characters, including a delightful parrot, and a clever plot revolving around a 50-year-old romance. A cleverly crafted and thoroughly delightful novel.

I’ve read and enjoyed Lizzie Lamb’s previous two novels and this third one was equally enjoyable. It is so refreshing to be able to read a sexy novel that is full of humour. Pershing the parrot is a delight. The author obviously has a great affection for all things Scottish and the island’s scenery and character are vividly described. Add to that a feisty heroine and a gorgeous hero in Issy and Brodie, plus a motley of quirky characters and an absorbing plot and it just has to be a recipe for success. Am already looking forward to her next one.

I've just finished reading Scotch on the Rocks, and for me, it's Lizzie Lamb's best so far.
I just loved it - the style and pace, that fabulous Scottish setting, the humour, the history, (that '60s Ban-the Bomb era!)
At the end, I found myself wanting to move to that place, live with those people!
A really great read.

I was reminded recently of a gathering I attended in Leicester where I met Lizzie Lamb and she gave me a paperback copy of her novel, Scotch on the Rocks. I was shocked to discover that was four years ago and yet this book was still waiting to be read. I have now put that situation right and here are my thoughts on Scotch on the Rocks.

The story starts with Ishabel Stuart racing to beat the tide as she powers across to Eilean na Sgairbh (Cormorant Island) before the causeway is flooded and the island cut off. Desperate to reach the sanctuary of her childhood home with Aunt Esme after leaving her job, and a fiancé she caught with his trousers down, as well as having to deal with the death of her father, Issy is disappointed to find Esme has a houseful already. Esme is about to depart on an anti-fracking protest with most of those at the cottage but one paying guest will remain, an American named Brodie.

Issy is annoyed that Esme is going, so she can’t confide her problems to her, and yet she will still not have the place to herself and therefore the peace and quiet she craves. Plus, she will have to endure Lindy, her younger cousin, coming and going as she all to obviously falls in lust with Brodie.

As Issy gets to know Brodie better she suspects he is up to something but eventually appreciates his support when she has to deal with her diva of a mother and the return of her errant fiancé.

I loved the setting for this story, a windswept island on Scotland’s west coast, and I enjoyed the characters, particularly Esme, Issy and Brodie. And the parrot, Pershing… oh yes, there is a parrot.

This is a romance, but on more than one level, because while we are reading about the budding relationship between Issy and Brodie there is something else going on and eventually the answers to all the questions Brodie brings slot into place with a most satisfying ending.

Highly recommended for all those who like a happy ever after.

A funny, light-hearted romance in the Scottish highlands. The build up of sexual tension was brilliantly done but the generous amount of reflections was a bit too much to my personal taste and made it slow paced.

Ishabel had hit rock bottom with the passing of her father and the following betrayal of her fiancé. Returning to her roots and the aunt that had raised her. The visiting Amarican was not on her agenda.
Reinventing her life on the remote island, old secrets surfaced in a life-altering way.

I've previously read two of Lizzie's books and loved them. However, this one had been languishing on my Kindle for far too long, so it was time to read it.

Scotland is one of my favourite places, too, and Lizzie's love for the country and its people comes through in her writing.

Love, long-buried secrets, an aged hippy, and a hot hero made this a most enjoyable read. Oh, and then there's Pershing.

“Romance novels are birthday cake and life is often peanut butter and jelly. I think everyone should have lots of delicious romance novels lying around for those times when the peanut butter of life gets stuck to the roof of your mouth.” – Janet Evanovitch

Life had too much peanut butter in it. I needed a birthday cake of a romance novel and, thankfully, Scotch on the Rocks was on the menu.

Why a birthday cake of a romance novel?

Well… because like birthday cake, you aren’t expecting nutrition from your romance novel. You don’t expect your latest romance or slice of birthday cake to make you a better person. And you don’t actually want much of a surprise. “Surprise – your birthday cake has nuts!” Is not something anyone wants to hear.

The comfort of predictability, reliable sweetness, a touch of decadence, and a great big pile of happy… that’s what makes both a good birthday cake and romance novel.

Scotch on the Rocks was a true birthday cake of a romance novel.

The woman is beautiful, but in a girl next door way: Yellow cake.

The man is gorgeous: Chocolate frosting.

And rich: Chocolate ganache frosting.

The banter between the two is witty: Two layers!

The steamy scenes are steamy without being raunchy: Extra big slice!

He, on occasion, wears a kilt: Frosting roses!

There is a super sassy parrot: Sparkler candle!

But then, of course, there is the terrible, everything has to fall apart so they can get back together section.

I hate that part.

It’s like when your husband pretends to steal all your frosting and then gives it back right at the last second. You’re pretty sure that since he hates frosting, he’s going to give it back but it’s always a relief when it’s back on your own plate. Just in case this is the time he changes his mind.

Sure, it adds some drama to the experience but I don’t actually want drama. I just want to eat my frosting and be happy. It was a relief that, while reading this birthday cake, frosting was merely scooped off my plate with a flourish before I received a wink and it was plopped right back on top!

Would I recommend it?

Well… do you like cake?

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I discovered this book because I’m a proud member of Rosie’s Book Review Team!

When I first started reading Scotch on the Rocks and was introduced to Brodie, I thought six foot three – yes; green eyes – yes; auburn hair….aah. You see I’ve never been a great fan of men with any red in their hair. My favourite heroes are dark, brown or blond but never flame haired. However…I have to say as I continued to read, I became quite smitten with Brodie McIntosh. In fact by the end of the book this hot American marine biologist had got right under my skin!
Scotch on the Rocks is a story packed full of characters plus an outrageously verbally abusive parrot called Pershing. Ishabel Stuart returnsto Cormorant Island where she grew up, bringing back her father’s ashes for a commemoration service. She has left behind a well-paid job and at the same time broken her engagement to the feckless Jack Innes-Kerr, her boss’s son. Issy’s is looking for a new life back home, and spending time with her Aunt Esme, who raised her. Unfortunately on arrival she discovers her politically active aunt has a house full of aging hippies and is about to join them on an environmental crusade, leaving Issy to look after her current paying guest, Brodie McIntosh. Issy is not happy; all she wants is some private space, time to sort out her father’s memorial service and work out her plans for setting up her arts and crafts workshops on the island. Instead she is faced with this six foot three American intruder who is just a little too nice for comfort. Issy suspects he has a hidden agenda and her suspicions, coupled with the fact they continually seem to clash fuel her dislike. But is it really dislike, or is she simply protecting herself from her real feelings after two bad experiences – an overbearing father and a fiance who is a two timing rat?
This book has something for everyone; it’s a love story and it also has comedy. Issy’s friend Lindy is quite outrageous in her pursuit of Brodie and Issy’s over the top opera diva mother La Bella Scozzese also provides some hilarious moments. And lastly there is mystery as a long buried secret is uncovered. A hugely entertaining read. Lizzie Lamb has delivered a great book and I look forward to more of the same.

I would like to thank the author for a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Ishabel (Issy) Stuart is introduced in dramatic style with a race along the causeway to Eilean na Sgairbh, against the incoming tide and an impending thunderstorm. She’s on her way home to her aunt Esme and the house she grew up in, now a B&B, along with a wounded heart and her father’s ashes. She needs the serenity of Cormorant Island, her aunt and a heart to heart chat. But Esme has guests, a motley crew of elderly activists, and was due to leave with them the following day, on a campaign against fracking.

One guest, however, plans on staying, which does nothing for Issy’s erstwhile plans for peace and quiet and a shoulder to cry on. Gorgeous, sexy and American, Brodie unsettles Issy, not least of all because she suspects there’s more to his visit than Brodie’s letting on.

As always, Lizzie Lamb’s wonderfully distinctive, strong characters are well defined and fascinating with developed back stories which are revealed as the story progresses. The growing attraction between Issy and Brodie is fun and romantic, and the cast of secondary characters are just as enjoyable. Not forgetting to mention one of the best – Pershing the parrot, of course, who has a penchant for colourful and highly amusing remarks, delivered just at the relevant moments. I laughed at the prying group of pushy village busybodies and could just imagine how everyone’s business was talked about and dissected. Issy is in for a few shocks, she has no idea of the events about to unfold or the secrets to be uncovered.

Realistic, authentic Scottish dialogue, convincing and laced with humour, and great characterisation, adds to the charm. The Scottish setting is beautifully described, the island’s coast and scenery are easily imagined. I love that Lizzie Lamb always adds much more to her stories than just romance, this one incorporating humour and conflict. The mystery surrounding the now ruined Stuart’s Twa Burns whisky distillery is fascinating and the question of what on earth does Kentucky have to do with a distillery on a remote Scottish island. There’s a romance that almost never was, and more besides, making this a great read for those that like added extras to their romances.

When your fiancé is found in a compromising position, just as you are dealt with the death of your father, there is only one thing to do, head home and back to the place you belong, and this is exactly what Ishabel Stuart does. Returning and escaping to the scenic, scottish highlands and the small island of Eilean na Sgairbh and back into the safety of her family home, a guest house run by her aunt. Issy is ready to stand on her own two feet and leave love behind and make something of her life alone.

At the bed and breakfast she is surprised to find an American guest called Brodie occupying her room. Issy takes an instant dislike to him and the more she sees him the more she questions his reasons for his visit. Issy has the intense feeling he wants something from her, but if this is so, just how much would she be willing to give?

I really enjoy Lizzie Lamb's books, she never disappoints, there is always a thrilling storyline with a fine romance, keeping you intrigued and hooked all the way through the book. As always there are some cracking characters and a pet parrot provides comedy and humorous moments throughout the story. I am happy to hear another book is in the pipeline from Lizzie, so I don’t have to wait too long for my next fix.

Thoroughly enjoyed this latest serving from Lizzie Lamb. Scotch on the Rocks was an amazing Scottish read. The characters were well constructed and totally engaging with their Gaelic language and witty banter. I am fortunate enough to live in Scotland and knew many of the places described within the novel. There were so many twists and turns, that it quickly became a page turner of excitement.
I felt that I had been transported to one of the many Scottish Islands around the rugged coastline and I so wanted to be the fly on the wall, listening to Issy and Brodie.
I thought the Author had staged the ending incredibly well. All to often the ending is crammed into two pages or your left with a list of questions that were not answered.
Cannot wait until Lizzie Lamb serves up her next novel. You should start with the first novel Tall, Dark and Kilted and follow it up with Boot Camp Bride to get a real feel for Scotland.

I was looking forward to reading Lizzie Lamb’s third novel and had it on pre-order as soon as it was available.
So very well done!
From the word go, the reader is sitting in the front rows watching the scenes taking place on the island of Eilean na Sgairbh as if it were a stage. That’s probably one of the traits that are typical of her style, and as with her previous novels, you can easily imagine a film version of the story.
A sort of comedy of errors, with a few peculiar characters giving a comic counterpoint, take Pershing the parrot, for instance, or Linda, or the peacenik nostalgics, where romance mixes with doubts and questions regarding the main characters’ past, and the unexpected is revealed in the end, in a perfectly balanced interconnection of people and their relations.
I loved it!
A much-appreciated bonus is the Glossary of Gaelic terms at the beginning.
I hope this is not the last story Mrs. Lamb sets in Scotland.
More than five stars to me!

I just love Lizzie Lamb's books and this new one is another great read. Set in the Highlands of Scotland I really felt as if I was there on Cormorant Island with all her colourful and sometimes unusual characters. Pershing the parrot was hilarious and almost eclipsed the main characters, Issy the heroine and not to forget the hot American hero Brodie. This book has everything; emotion, fun, humour and of course romance with a bit of sex on the side!

If you haven't read any of Lizzie Lamb's books yet, you should really put them at the top of your 'To Read' shelf and get reading.
