The moment the X-Men arrive in Japan for Wolverine's wedding, a fight breaks out between Yukio and the Silver Samurai! The X-Men set out to see what the fuss is all about.
Chris Claremont is a writer of American comic books, best known for his 16-year (1975-1991) stint on Uncanny X-Men, during which the series became one of the comic book industry's most successful properties.
Claremont has written many stories for other publishers including the Star Trek Debt of Honor graphic novel, his creator-owned Sovereign Seven for DC Comics and Aliens vs Predator for Dark Horse Comics. He also wrote a few issues of the series WildC.A.T.s (volume 1, issues #10-13) at Image Comics, which introduced his creator-owned character, Huntsman.
Outside of comics, Claremont co-wrote the Chronicles of the Shadow War trilogy, Shadow Moon (1995), Shadow Dawn (1996), and Shadow Star (1999), with George Lucas. This trilogy continues the story of Elora Danan from the movie Willow. In the 1980s, he also wrote a science fiction trilogy about female starship pilot Nicole Shea, consisting of First Flight (1987), Grounded! (1991), and Sundowner (1994). Claremont was also a contributor to the Wild Cards anthology series.
The X-Men gang are in Tokyo! I really like that the events of Wolverine’s first series actually carried on, allowing for a more natural way of building the world around these characters.
The cover of this issue is a bit of a misdirection. I mean, the team did go to Japan for Wolverine’s wedding but it was only mentioned maybe twice? Although, you can’t really fault the story for that, A LOT was going on!
One such thing was Storm’s ability to control her powers...or lack of. I’m very interested to see where that story goes. Plus FINALLY Scott is asking questions about Madelyne Pryor.
The X-Men travel to Japan for Wolverine's wedding, this is basically a tie-in to Wolverine's solo series, but it's pretty good, in a generic kinda of way, I've always loved the design of the Silver Samurai.
Though drawn by Paul Smith, many of the panels feel like he’s trying to emulate Frank Miller from the preceding Wolverine series. I actually found Yukio far more interesting here than I did in that series, her motivations are more clearly defined and that mania is really contagious. Personally, I’ve never liked Storm being out of control except under very specific duress. Out of control powers is commonplace for X-Men, and having such an incredibly powerful woman in complete control of herself was what made her, and her power, so incredibly appealing, an example to look up to. Following these issues, I know if the ‘punk era’, which while I like the style, I dislike the idea - punk is about finding that you can have power against the oppressive forces of society and government. Storm, aside from mutant prejudice, doesn’t have that at the moment, she’s demonstrated her powers, been a goddess even, leader of the team, having power over her friends, she isn’t, at this point, entirely down trodden. Instead, punk is shown as ‘freeing from responsibility’, which, to me, is more of a conservative view of what punk is and does.
This issue is also used to set up the next issue, in which we get a proper debut of Rogue as an X-Man.
The X-Men including Rogue arrive in Japan for Logan's wedding with Mariko. Despite Logan's dislike, Mariko welcomes Rogue. Yukio, an old friend of Logan's interrupts Silver Samurai's surveillance of Logan and is saved from falling by Storm. Silver Samurai turns out to be Mariko's half brother and challenges her for clan leadership. Viper, his girlfriend poisons the X-Men, except Storm. Scott continues his investigation of Madelyne Pyror. Storm and Yukio team up to take on Silver Samurai and Viper. Storm continues experiencing control issues and is influenced by Yukio's carefree lifestyle. She loses control of her lightening and is saved by Yukio, but sees a flame bird resembling the Phoenix. The X-men are in the hospital but Logan fights off the poison to go after Silver Samurai. Rogue insists on accompanying him.

Why TF did Rogue go with them to Wolverine’s wedding??? She doesn’t know him??? Did Xavier just pack a bag and say “okay, have fun!!! Remember to introduce yourself as a good guy now!!!” Like bro why is she THERE!!
the X-Men are in Japan following the events of Wolverine’s solo series. The assassins are still at large with the Silver Samurai attempting to take control. I’m excited to see Wolverine and Rogue’s dynamic in the next issue
A good start to this 2-parter. Also, a fresh look into the tighter continuity of the X-titles of the time, as Wolverine had been absent from Uncanny whilst his mini-series was going on. The events of this issue directly follow that series. Smith provides his usual good artwork. Claremont's characterizations and developments work here, too. Recommended for Rogue, Wolverine, and Storm fans.
