In a world full of flesh eating creatures, sometimes humans are the more terrifying monsters.
It’s been three months since revolution swept through the city of Cherai and ousted Councilwoman King. Banished, the city now has a chance to recover from decades of injustice and oppression. With the help of Ben, Songhay, and the Gemini Gang, Niko works towards building a more egalitarian society.
But someone is murdering Slither hunters.
And coupled with the councilwoman’s reappearance, all of Niko’s hard work balances on a precarious precipice – one wrong move and it will all be for naught.
As the number of bodies rise and tensions within the city increase, Niko is soon forced to make a difficult decision. And it could change everything.
The body count is rising in Cherai and it isn’t just the slithers that are doing the killing. Has humanity’s thin hold finally been snapped, leaving the city a murdering den of darkness? Slither hunters are being killed, is it because of a dark secret that has been kept? Is there a puppet master behind the slayings trying to bring more unrest and fear to the masses? Who could possibly want humanity’s greatest line of defense wiped out?
An ugly entity from the recent past has returned with all of the haughty pomp she is so good at showing. Councilwoman King is here to wreak havoc, cause unrest and re-take what she once commanded. How can Niko stand against the power of this cold-hearted monster who promises to destroy all she is trying to build? Is the tide turning against Niko, Ben and Songhay in spite of the good they are trying to do? Sometimes a soul can be beaten down so low that the known evil feels safer than the unknown future with its promise of a better tomorrow... Niko and company are forced to travel to a distant city underground where there is one who has answers she needs. Is she chasing a dream while councilwoman King creates a bigger nightmare in Cherai?
Sadness, murder, change and heartbreak for dreams lost, for a future now clouded with doubt and everyone is either still looking to young Niko for the answers or hunting her down to quiet her forever.
Kayti Nika Raet has outdone herself with Monster as she steps up her game rising to the tension and tone of the world she has created. No one knows their characters better than their creator, the author, so we must trust that Ms. Raet will at some point give our Niko a break. If I picture the chaos of a post – apocalyptic world gone wrong, I see the world Kayti Nika Raet has built. Prepare to brave the slithers, the acid rain and a world so foreboding that only the strong can survive, only people like Niko, whether she has her bat or her sword, I’d follow her anywhere, thanks to the brilliant writing of Kayti Nika Raet. If you haven’t tried this series out, you are missing a hidden gem of suspense, danger and survival.

LOVED it!!! So good I didn't want it to end. Definitely another awesome book in a super cool and awesome series! This one made me cry tho, there is something super sad that happens and if you are like me, I love all the characters, you will definitely be sad, maybe you will need tissues, you have been warned. Something good comes after the sad, something that will make you happy or at least it made me really happy. So it's not all bad and I knew it would happen eventually but I was still hoping something different, some miracle maybe? There is a lot going on in this part of the story as well, plenty of action to keep you at the edge of your seat and some very romantic parts as well that definitely made me happy. I am definitely looking forward to reading the last book although it is a bit sad to say goodbye to this great series. I will recommend to all my friends!
In MONSTER, Kayti Nika Raet does it again, bringing the fierce and amazing with her fourth installment of The Outsider Chronicles. Set mostly in the city of Cherai, MONSTER recounts Niko’s desperate struggle to maintain control of the city while killers roam the streets, Slithers haunt the dark spaces, and death and desire commingle in such unfair interplay that one can only close their eyes, hold their breath, and hope.
For what, I’m not sure.
A happy ending, I doubt it. Perhaps some hints of laughter and light, here and there. Maybe. But that’s a conversation for book five.
Right here and right now I can tell you that MONSTER grabs hold of the reader from page one and never lets go. As usual, Kayti excels in the action and fight sequences, thrilling and terrorizing with each slash of a blade or hiss of a Slither. She also exhibits a mastery of the quiet, the fraught, the hushed.
There is not a single extraneous word anywhere in Kayti’s manuscript, each one matters, and you get the sense they’ve been pored over and considered and studied with the eye of a meticulous word warrior determined to bring her readers to their knees. And here she succeeds tenfold.
MONSTER, for all its horror and despair, is full of the feels. Everywhere. Grief. Love. Despair. Fear. Need. Hunger. Pain. Devastation.
It’s all here and it’s brutal and gorgeous and stunning and you find yourself wanting to stay lost in Kayti’s world of perfect words forever.
And then for a raunchy bitch like myself, there’s Chapter 37. I kind of feel like Kayti wrote that chapter for me and my filthy little heart. #TeamSonghay because really, must you ask? And if you must, don’t. Just get the book already.
The first time I read MONSTER, I told Kayti she did the impossible and wrote the perfect novel. After reading it a second time, I stand by that statement: MONSTER is perfection.
Bravo, Kayti, you badass #WriteBitch.
Oh, and girlfriend, if you’re starting to smell yourself right now, thinking about all the ways to kill Songhay for your big grand bloody finale, you better reconsider, love. #justsaying
"Oi," Roosevelt protested. "I'm not regular. I'm amazing."
MONSTER is the penultimate novel of Raet's Outsider Chronicles. It is beautiful and sexy and sad and my emotions ran rampant throughout the entire story.
In this installment, Niko and her group are trying to maintain a tenuous grip on the city of Cherai, after freeing it from Councilwoman King and her tyranny. However, the return of Mrs. King slowly fractures their control, as a serial killer emerges, leaving cryptic messages.
Now, I mentioned in my review of book 3 that it was the darkest book in Raet's brilliant series. This one gave me hope and then shattered it, and it kept happening repeatedly through the book and honestly, Ms. Raet has a gift for weaving themes into her character arcs.
This was a brilliant fourth book, and I give it a 5/5. Can't wait to get my hands on the final installment. Don't get killed ;)

I loved the slither vs slither hunter twist that I can't talk about without giving away spoilers. It kinda felt like a throwback to book one, which makes me super curious to read book 5.
Also, a major character dies and so I was super sad. ::sniffle:: but it was handled brilliantly. So I could only get a little mad at the author.
The likes and dislikes: ~I don't care if there needs to be an order, I need to first freak out, yell at the screen and then silently sob at how amazing and quite realistic this book (all of them really) is! *punches a pillow, takes a breath and settles* ~I never judge a book by its cover, but this...LOVE IT! ~I have noted this in a previous review, but Raet doesn't go back and retells you what happened in the previous book, in a manner that would make me want to pull my hair out, she falls right back in and that it great! ~I'm a weirdo, so here goes...the rain, though deadly actually has a quite unique benefit I totally love. Being...the trash piling up, gets 'eaten' by the acid, which makes the tree hugger in me feel all warm and fuzzy. ~The small thing I tend to dislike of YA is that there always seems to be a love triangle (at least the few things I've read) and I just can't find myself to like those, but...eh, it sorted itself out >_< and I love Niko, so all is forgiven. ~Ari! Duc! I didn't realise how much I've missed them until reading them interact again. MALIK!!! *sobs* ~Ben and his notes make me swoon! ~Songhay's story...meeep! ~I so didn't cry my eyes out! ~The book is filled with several kinds of tensions and it makes the series as a whole damn near perfect when looking at the technicality of it all. ~I HATE THE COUNCILWOMAN! I'm gonna ask again...are there any takers for an organised group killing of this woman? Seriously, we can do a blood oath! I so hate her, which in her only benefit means she is a great antagonist. ~Crazy to realise in this world something as simple as a common cold has once more become life threatening.
Notes on characters: Niko - I want one. She grows even more than I would've expected. In Outsider, you saw it happen, but here with Monster, it is like the survivor, the outsider, the one who always does it herself, gave in, in the slightest sense and it made her stronger as a character. She truly is a chick that should be a role model for young ones. Ben - I want one. Songhay - I want one. Councilwoman King - Have I mentioned that I REALLY don't like her?! Still a B####! *sharpens nails* Roosevelt - Is my fave, she is as she said; 'cute, spunky and lovable'. Oh, and her love for peaches is just brilliant. Zenith - He is really growing on me.
Diversity is defined by Raet's work and it honestly is one of the biggest reasons I'm sure she'll be entertaining us for years to come.
After Niko and her makeshift gang as taken over the city of Cherai, they are determined to make it more fair and give everyone an equal chance of survival. The doors to the city are opened and people are able to move freely. The slither hunters patrol on the outside of the city walls also, so that they can keep those outside the walls safe from slithers also.
It isn't always easy to create a fair and open environment and Niko quickly realizes this. Upon the councilwoman's return, things start to shift and not for the better. Once slither hunters start to become the target of slaughter, something has to be done.
Niko and others must set off on a dangerous adventure to another city, in search of reinforcements. During this story, there is loss and sadness, there is love and passion, and there is some downright scary moments. We are able to see characters in a new light, and see their bravery and character shine through. Raet does a great job of developing the characters and banding them together all in the sake of saving Cherai.
All the Songhay lovers will be immensely happy with this installment of the series. There is fast paced action and thrilling adventures in this book. Once you pick it up, you will not want to put it down.
This series just keeps getting better and better. I feel like each book I read I get to peel another layer off and get to know a different side to Niko. Niko and her story hold a special place in my heart. I just adore the writing and how each book is a new adventure with a variety of different characters. I am in love with Roosevelt. She is so funny. When I wasn't crying for Niko, I was crying because Roosevelt made me laugh so hard. Niko's story needs to be read by millions because most people would really enjoy getting to know her as I have. I just can't get over how much I love this series I am having a hard time putting it in to words. The writing has progressively gotten better with each book I'm not sure how the author plans to wrap up this series but I am anxious to find out. I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters but I'm anxious to find out what happens. I would recommend this series to anyone who wants to go on an amazing adventure with a badass chick.
Monster is the fourth exciting installment in The Outsider Chronicles and I can tell you right now that this series is not slowing down! Just because Niko and her friends successfully toppled the government of Cherai doesn't mean they're in the clear. There were tons of action-packed scenes and interesting revelations in this one. As always, a must-read for me!
Took me a very long time to read this book despite it not being that long. I still liked it but I had some problems.
I was excited for the mystery of who is killing Slither hunters. But that wasn't developed. It was just like people are dying. Oh yeah, some guys confessed. Case closed.
I also didn't believe that the Graymen would "elect" Regina King as their representative. A few weeks ago, she was chemically enslaving them! I get that she's a big bad, but that regime is over. Why would the Graymen put her back in power? She must play some role in book 5. If not, that's a HUGE plot problem.
It was also kinda weird that Niko left her brother so easily. There was one line that was like, Jared will be fine because he's part of the Gemini gang. WHAT? That doesn't make sense. He's safer than being on the outside in the rain, but I wouldn't say that a 12-year-old in a gang is safe.
I was also disappointed that Niko just goes from guy to guy. There was a weird moment when Songhay says something like, "I love you." And Niko says something like, "Always." But like 2 weeks ago she was with Ben. Really? Always? Was Always when a couple months before that she was with Mallik. So what happened? I know that they are dead and all, but she moved on soo quickly and didn't really adequately mourn based on how her feelings were described.
