Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.

Captain Revaliere has been crippled since he lost his feet some twenty years or more by a cannon explosion. Mademoiselle de Mandel was Revaliere's fiance but he could not marry her being a cripple, so she married Monsieur de Fleurel and had three children. It is interesting that he says he is working on a future marriage, is it this little girl that hold his hand. And how would that be okay when she is of age but he would not marry his fiance?

“The Cripple," by Guy de Maupassant, is a interesting short story that keeps the reader wanting to read on till the end, and I would recommend it for anyone who is looking for a sad story with a happy ending. In "The Cripple" a young man meets a character from his past who has suffered a tragic accident causing him to become crippled and lose the love of his life. Though he can not love the girl, it does not mean she is gone forever. “The Cripple,” plays on the emotions in a seesaw kind of way. One moment the spirits are lifted, and the next they are brought down again, and so it continues until the very end, when one leaves the story in a somewhat lifted mood. This makes the reader react in a way that causes them to want to see how the story ends. “The Cripple” is about the sacrifice of one's self while still showing pleasure and joy. This accomplishes the purpose and beauty of the writing as it shows that just because there is tragedy does not mean depression has to follow. There is beauty in looking at the positive side when facing hardships and that is what the text is saying. This story is short but well written and I believe is worth reading for anyone interested.
