Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.

With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.

The Avengers are worried about the Hulk after he quit the team and go looking for him. After yet another battle with his former team, the Hulk flees to a deserted island. There he meets Namor, the Sub-Mariner, who dislikes humanity as much as Hulk does so they decide to join forces. They challenge the Avengers to a fight, and hilarity ensues.

Three issues into this, and the Hulk has fought the other Avengers in every one of them so far. So that’s getting pretty tired already, but the team-up with Sub-Mariner puts a new spin on things. My favorite part was how Hulk and Namor immediately plan to betray and destroy each other the second they beat the Avengers.

Random observations:
• Iron Man has upgraded to a better looking red & gold suit, but the helmet still needs work.
• Wasp’s main role continues to be panting over men, particularly Thor.
• Hulk first fights the Avengers in the American Southwest, and he gets away by hiding in a truck loaded with gravel. That gets dumped in some body of water. Next thing you know the Hulk is in…. the Atlantic Ocean? How far was that truck going to dump a load of rocks into the sea?

The Hulk and Sub-Mariner take on the Avengers! Great early battle issue that helped set the stage for Journey into Mystery #112: the first time Thor takes on the Hulk.

Merged review:

Against the power of the Hulk and Namor! The first meeting of the Hulk and Thor! Read many years ago - was happy to introduce my friends son to this epic battle!

AVENGERS #1-10, JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #103 (The Avengers' First Arc)
*Note: A nifty READING ORDER has been provided at the end of this review

Essentially, this series serves as a transition point between storylines; Here, Stan Lee
brings together EXISTING character arcs from 5 separate comic books and wraps them all up nicely...
while also setting up NEW character arcs for 5 separate comic books. Thus, effectively transitioning all the characters from one point to another, it works as a truly character driven narrative.

What's really interesting is what occurs around issue 4 of the storyline... which even non-readers almost universally know already, but I won't dare spoil it. It involves something of a huge achievement for comic book history, and a milestone moment in the careers of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. It's a story that returns to the root of both their careers, providing a touching full-circle storyline for the character in question affected by what happens. Through this character, it also introduces the ongoing story-arc for these first 10 issues...

...Which is the introduction of "The Masters of Evil!" Essentially, they are the anti-Avengers; if the Avengers are the major heroes from the 5 separate comic books, the Masters of Evil are the major villains from each of the 5 separate comic books. Stan Lee actually took a major villain from each Superheroes storyline, and brought them together here. It provides an interesting philosophical contrast between the two teams, the battle between the heroes and villains providing a nice metaphor of the battle between good and evil.

In fact, that's essentially the thematic purpose of this comic book in general; a meta-commentary on superheroes and super-villains, using them to explore the deeper philosophical notions of good and evil, especially when the heroes are as morally grey as the villains are. Highly recommended.

Avengers #3 is a classic comic featuring The Avengers versus The Hulk and The Sub Mariner. This is a storyline started in The Avengers #1. These events only serve to stir the pot for more confrontations down the road between The Avengers and The Hulk, which is all a big misunderstanding. I urge you to read the golden age issues of The Avengers. It's a must for comic book/super-hero lovers.

The Classics Are Classic For Reasons

Sure, the writing is dated & a little stiff. But end of the day, these are the stories that built what we know nowadays. Any fans of current movies or comics should recognize that it was Kirby & the Marvel Bullpen that started it all.

Notes:
1. This is very, very sexist (still waiting for the Wasp to actually DO something!)
2. I definitely prefer RDJ's version of Iron Man over this "good" millionaire.
