Young mechanic Andrew Campbell’s life couldn’t be better. He is about to restore a Ford Mustang with his dad before heading off on the ultimate cross-country road trip with his best friend, Tanner McKenzie.
But tragedy strikes, and Andrew’s life is shattered. Worried his family will be torn apart if he doesn’t step in, Andrew makes a tough choice between following his heart and doing what he needs to do to protect his little brother.
When Andrew pushes Tanner away, Tanner heads off on the planned trip alone. Once Tanner leaves town, his life takes a different path, and it’s ten years before he returns. Now a firefighter, he’s never forgotten his first love, and no one has ever taken Andrew’s place in his heart. He’s determined to see if Andrew feels the same way. He just hopes Andrew’s excited to see him, hopes that he’s available—and finally out—after all this time.
They might not have been ready to deal with emerging feelings years ago, but now might be the time for their second chance at love.
Nic Starr lives in Australia where she tries to squeeze as much into her busy life as possible. Balancing the demands of a corporate career with raising a family and writing can be challenging but she wouldn’t give it up for the world.
Always a reader, the lure of m/m romance was strong and she devoured hundreds of wonderful m/m romance books before eventually realising she had some stories of her own that needed to be told!
When not writing or reading, she loves to spend time with her family–an understanding husband and two beautiful daughters–and is often found indulging in her love of cooking and planning her dream home in the country.
Before I get started I want to clarify that is the second book in the Heroes’ series. I failed to notice that. I’m usually very careful about reading series in order; my OCT tendencies like things to stay neat. And somehow I completely missed the fact that this is book TWO. Now, I’ve seen where this is claimed to be a stand-alone, but I don’t think I agree with that. I would have really really liked the first book first. I plan on going back so I can start from the beginning despite the fact that it’s completely spoiled. So, fair warning.
Things begin a decade in the past and the first half of the story is told with Andrew’s voice. I liked Andrew. A lot. So does his best friend, Tanner. The guys are in their early twenties and enjoying life. Both are working at the local mechanic shop and preparing to embark on a cross-country trip of a lifetime. Andrew is very close to his dad and his younger brother Josh. They lost their mom a long time ago but they never lost their tight bond. I really enjoyed their family time and Nic creates an amazing picture of their simple happiness. Which of course makes it that much harder when it is shattered. Andrew’s father dies unexpectedly and Andrew’s path is forced to take a detour, an alternate route without Tanner.
Fast-forward a decade to the present…Tanner is coming home. The second half of their story is primarily told from Tanner. He left town all those years ago with a broken heart and he yearns to come back and make it whole again. He went into the armed forces, (army firefighter) and has traveled far and wide but hasn’t found what he was looking for. Once he admits that he is still desperately in love with Drew, he is determined to find out if maybe their time has finally come. To be together. That’s all he’s ever wanted, could Drew still want it too?
Friends-to-lovers, GFY and second chances create a nice cocktail. I was enamored with all of the boys but especially Andrew. However, it was a tad….easy? I was anticipating a bit more angst and truly, there wasn’t any. Andrew was forced to make tough decisions but never looked back. His love life was not even a contender on the priority list ten years ago, but his path has changed again. The time has come for Andrew to focus on himself and follow those dreams that were put on idle so long ago. It’s a lovely, trouble-free ride with a bit of steam if you are willing to join along.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to find out how Charlie’s story began.
Nice and sweet...it didn't blow me away, but I really enjoyed reading this one.
Andrew (22) and Tanner (21) have been best friends for some time. They work at the same garage and they are planning a 6 month road trip together. Both are very excited about it. Tanner is gay and out, although not everybody knows, because he isn't advertising it. Andrew has never been in a realtionship or had feelings for anybody...yet.
Andrew lives with his father and his little 15 year old brother Josh (book 1). Their mother died when Josh was a baby, so it's been the 3 of them for a long time. They are a very loving family and I liked reading about their interactions.
Lately Andrew has been feeling differently about Tanner...sexualy and romanticly..and it's confusing the hell out of him. Tanner Always had feelings for Andrew. They don't act on it, but when tragedy strikes and Andrews father suddenly dies...Andrew can no longer hide his feelings for Tanner.
But Andrew is freaked out. He has all these responsabilities now and he really wants to do right by his brother. After his boss makes some stupid remark about gay people, Andrew is scared to death that chils services will take Josh away if he keeps seeing Tanner. So he does what all stupid fuckers do...he pushes Tanner away and convinces Tanner he that they can't be together.
Tanner goes on his road trip alone and Andrew takes on the roll of being Josh's dad.
Now that was the first part of the book....the second part takes place ten years later.
Tanner is back in town. After traveling and enlisting, he now wants to settle down...and he wants Andrew. He doens't waste any time hunting the man down and confronting him. This is were the book could have turned angsty or whatever...but it didn't. Andrew is now 31/32 and he knows he wants Tanner just as much....
Like I said, not a lot of angst. I did feel sorry for Andrew about losing his amazing dad and having to man up and take care of everything. He really did love Josh a whole lot.
Once the boys reunite...there are no fights and no conflicts. They both know what they want...each-other !!!
So nice fluffy read with some nice steam in there too. Not a whole lot because the first half of the book is about their friendship, and tragedy.
These boys were sweet together..without being cheesy about it :))
I did not read book 1 (Josh's book) so it can be read as a stand alone
The second book in this serie is about Andrew and Tanner. The first part of the book goes back in time and explains what Andrew was like before his (and Josh's) father died, how he started to develop feelings for Tanner and how the death of his father messed up a lot of his plan's for the future. The second part of the books starts were Charlie's Hero ended.
I really loved this book and i'm so glad we got to see the story of Andrew and Tanner. I was so happy to see that they got to have a HEA :) I definitely look forward to the next book in this serie. I must say that the ending of this book, that starts with the beginning of Patrick's and Simon's story is very promesing.
Review by: multitaskingmomma My Rating: 5 of 5 Stars
The end of Charlie's Hero was the stuff that made me jump with excitement for it held the promise of Andrew's story. With Andrew's Promise, we get what the author promised and more for this is a really sweet story of love, perseverance, forgiveness and acceptance.
Andrew is Josh's older brother, the one who gave up all to guarantee Charlie get the chance to live the life their father made sure to give them. Andrew's life was normal, a widowed father and a younger brother living in one house. They were friends and family and life was good. Andrew made plans with his best friend, Tanner. They were to take six months off from life and go on a grand adventure. Andrew had it all mapped out and Tanner was excited to see all the places they had dreamed of going to since they were young kids. Unfortunately, life took a tumble, as we all know, and Andrew could not keep up with the adventure and instead had to stay and take care of his younger brother. When Josh found his happiness with Charlie, he had been hesitant to reveal to Andrew he was gay. To his surprise, Andrew did not mind in the least. Curious why, Josh finds out at the last chapter of his book what Andrew was really all about.
Tanner had loved Andrew for so long and was heartbroken when Andrew could not go with him to the adventure they had planned for years. To make matters worse, Andrew turned his back on their love. At the time it happened, Tanner did not really understand. Ten years later, he reaches out to Andrew and fortunately, gets the answer he wanted and needed.
The story is, again, very simple. Love given a second chance. Love conquers all. Love is a many splendored thing. Simple plot. Sweet story. With Nic Starr making sure to put the smile on her readers' face, this is a favorite story to read over and over again. Especially as it is not as angst ridden as one would expect from a plot like this.
You want to smile?

As much as I enjoyed the debut novel in this series which portrayed Josh and Charlie, I was far more interested in the glimpses I saw of Josh’s older brother, Andrew. I was certain there had to be a story there between Josh’s memories of how his brother was before they lost their dad and things Josh remembered about Andrew’s relationship with his best friend, Tanner. Now in ‘Andrew’s Promise’ I get to find out and hopefully see these two men find what they were looking for so long ago.
I really liked the fact that the author took me straight back to the beginning, ten years before Josh’s story. I got an in-depth look into Andrew, what he was thinking, feeling, his insecurities about whether he could take care of Josh after losing their dad, and mostly about his fears of having to be the head of the household and shoulder all the responsibilities at his young age. I also got a good look at how Andrew feels over his body’s reaction to his best friend - the strongest reaction Andrew had ever had to anyone - and his confusion after. My heart ached for both of these brothers at losing all their stability and safety net in one quick second.
I understood why Andrew made the decision he did. He had to put Josh’s needs above everything else and his own boss had insinuated that some people might not like the idea of Tanner, a homosexual, being around Josh. Andrew is only twenty-one and he can’t risk anyone taking Josh away from him. So pushing Tanner away, and out of his life was the only decision he thought he could make. Unfortunately, the next ten years lead to Andrew living a lonely, sad life, focused solely on raising Josh and working, putting all of his dreams aside.
Nic Starr is a new author for me but I can already tell that I'm going to love her books. Full review coming soon. Off to read Charlie 's Hero because I am a moron and started out of order. 4.5 *
Andrew took the helm in his family when his father passed away unexpectedly but at the tender age of 22 he had a lot to learn, and he had to shape up sharpish because his little brother who was relying on him. With pressure like that he is bound to make mistakes and his first and his most devastating is the way he turns his back on the relationship that Tanner and him had. Friends for years before they acted and changed the dynamic of their relationship, I thought he was foolish to cut those ties, especially at a time when he needed the support that Tanner would have given him. In a way I felt sorry for them both. Tanner couldn’t face staying around and not being able to have the man he wanted, so he does what he is sure is for the best, he leaves town. Life on the road is interesting to say the lease for Tanner, but having been away for a decade I am sure that we could have been afforded a lot more detail about his adventure than we got. But Andrew felt sorrowful to me, his life felt as if it had been vacuous, without either much direction or joy. Everything just seemed to be more trouble than it was worth. I liked the secondary relationship between Josh and Charlie and the doorway that his honesty eventually opened. I liked the fact that despite time and distance, it is apparent that Tanner has never either forgotten or gotten over Andrew. He was hurt with the events that happened before his left, they have lost so much time but now he is back in town there is no way that he can ignore the way he feels. Holding out an olive branch to Andrew he is prepared to put his heart back into the affray to see if the flicker of what they had all those years ago could possibly be re-ignited. I didn’t read the first book in this series, my co-blogger Sue did but I read her review before I started this book and I have to say that I don’t feel that I lost anything by not having read book one. This was a quick easy read, it was fairly simple in its scenario but I think that worked, it gave the information that we were given time to shine. I love a second chance story and this wasn’t mired in angst and as a novice to this genre, I found that appealing.
Andrew is a character that was previously introduced in Charlie's Hero, book 1 in the series, which I haven't read. I've been told that book one introduced Andrew after he'd started taking care of his younger brother and I'm glad I didn't have that information ahead of time. Andrew's friendship with Tanner prior to his the upheaval is important because it's the foundation that their newer romantic connection is built on.
Andrew's part of this story is so sad. He willingly gives up his dreams in order to care for his brother, which is something not many young men in his situation would be willing to do. The emotional turmoil that he undergoes is daunting. Add having to grow up in the blink of an eye and it isn't any wonder that it rocks his world and ends up changing him forever.
Tanner stands by Andrew through it all, but once he start to adjust to the changes in his life Andrew pushes Tanner away. Having just witnessed his best friend give up everything for his brother I'm surprised that Tanner didn't figure out that Andrew was acting true to form by insisting he take their road trip alone rather than give up their shared dream as well. I was disappointed that he left and didn't fight for harder harder. It smacked of abandonment to me and even though were meant to feel compassion for him as his first love drives him away, I couldn't.
That he eventually comes to his senses and arrives back in town to fight for a second chance with Andrew is the best part of this story. After all the heartache I was relieved that something in Andrew's life was starting to go right. I would have liked to see more character development, especially during the time that they were apart, but I'm a huge fan of second chances, which is the backbone of this story. Andrew's Promise is a highly emotional journey and I loved the happy ending.
So when the first book in this series, Charlie’s Hero, ended we got a bit of a glimpse of what was to come in Andrew’s story. In this second book in the Heroes series (that I have been anxiously awaiting reading) we get to see what happened between Andrew and Tanner way back when they had the fight that had Josh hiding his sexuality from his brother ten years ago, and then what happens in the present day when Tanner returns home. While it could be read as a stand-alone, I highly recommend that readers start with the first book in the series because that is where you really fall in love with Andrew and the person he is.
Andrew is the brother we all wish we had. His whole adult life has been put on hold in order to provide his brother with a stable home after their father died. Despite giving up everything, he isn’t bitter or resentful, but he isn’t truly happy either. Now with his brother in a relationship and moving on with his life, Andrew doesn’t know how to move on with his own life because there isn’t anyone who can replace Tanner.
Tanner was heartbroken when Andrew shut the door on their relationship and sent him off on their grand adventure by himself. Returning home, he spied Andrew and his brother at a basketball game and realized the power he had to destroy their happiness and enlisted in the Army. Despite living his life and sowing his wild oats for the last ten years, he’s never found anyone to replace Andrew in his heart.
This is my first book by this author, yes, this is the second one in the series but some how I read this one first. I didn’t feel lost so I’m guessing it doesn’t matter.
Because this book is told in two phases instead of flashbacks won big brownie points.
The book itself happens in two phases, first 100 pages or so, is the kids being just out of school around nineteen, discovering sexuality, each other feelings and planning a big trip. Tanner and Andrew have been friends for forever but I guess the way they were brought up, neither one was allowed to express feelings or maybe they were late bloomers? Although they both realize they like each other they certainly haven’t talked about it. When things fall apart and finally Andrew pushes Tanner away, Andrew turns in on himself and decides that’s that
The second phase is Tanner coming back to town, ten years later after Andrew tells him he just can’t.
Ten years on, and Tanner never lost his love for Andrew. Andrew is still shy about everyone knowing even though everyone is ten years older. But watching these two develop a more adult friendship and then a courtship and finally a sexual relationship was charming. The way Tanner gives Andrew time, space to wrap his head and heart around everything.
The fact that Andrew finds that people are actually understanding and supportive including his brother adds a real feel good touch to the book. The HEA was also well done. I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review by Crystals Many reviews
oh, i knew i would love this story and was truly not disappointed. i'm not even sure you can call this a second chance at love...it's more a lifetime of love. and it was absolutely perfect.
when andrew and josh lost their father, andrew inherited all his responsibilities - raising josh, taking care of the house, being the adult. he completely gave up his life and turned away from his one true love. he is absolutely selfless and was proud to do the things he did but he hasn't lived in 10 years. he gave up all his dreams to take care of everything.
tanner is a fun loving, take life by the horns kind of guy. he went through with the plans he and andrew made and then went on with his life for 9 years. when he comes back in town, he's not giving up on finally forging a relationship with the only man he's ever loved.
these men are so sweet together. i always love friends to lovers - the best place to start a relationship is being great/best friends. they don't hold back their feelings - completely unafraid to share their emotions with each other. and the epilogue to this book is just perfect.
it was great to see all the guys from book 1. we get more of josh and charlie and a prelude to patrick and simon's story.
i wholeheartedly recommend not only this book, but this author and series.
When I read and reviewed Charlie’s Hero one of the things that caught my attention was Andrew’s commitment to his brother Josh. Then knowing that the author Nic Starr was going to write his story I knew all bets were off, I wanted to read it right away.
I have to say, I am SO happy that Bec asked to review Andrew’s Promise.
Andrew and Tanner are friends and have been for a long time. When the circumstances of Andrew and Josh’s dad passing away, things change because feelings started to get involved and the inevitable happened.
The thing about their story is that we get the background of what transpired ten years back and the explanation behind the separation.
When Tanner comes back into Andrew’s life …. It is with the purpose of reclaiming the man he has always loved, this is no secret, but the way He approaches Andrew is a beautiful thing.
Andrew finally understands he needs to decide to be happy and let his feelings do for him what he couldn’t have done ten years back.
This is an excellent read … a story about knowing that some sacrifices are difficult but after all, one day … destiny will be on your side when you keep your promises.
This was just okay. I felt like the story was more of an outline than a complete story. The characters were likeable but not well developed. The conflict was barely any conflict really and it was resolved way too easily.
I am all for happy endings but there just wasn't enough conflict here to keep me fully invested. I just wanted more interaction and more detail between the MCs. Instead of going into specific details about events that did not add much to the story (like routines or wallpaper or unpacking) I think the writing could have been better spent working on showing us who the characters were. What were their lives like in the ten years apart? Anything about the actual characters rather than surroundings would have gone a long way to add depth. I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading this one but I don't feel comfortable recommending it either.
Book 2 of Nic Starr’s Heroes series is equally as fantastic as book 1. Andrew’s Promise takes us 10 years in the past in a 2 part, past to present story. It’s an emotional, heart soaring tale. We follow Andrew, Josh’s brother, and his best friend Tanner as they discover themselves and each other. A love story a decade in the making. Part 1 is the past part 2 is the future. No time jumps people, so don’t worry! Tanner is a pure delight. He holds Andrew up, supports and loves him until tragedy tests their strength. I loved how this book showed that sometimes we are on the right path but there are detours we need to take to reach our destination. Home is still the same address, getting there isn’t always easy, but always worth it. I cried my eyes out both in sadness and in joy. This is a marvelous series. Each book has linked characters brilliantly and I cannot wait to read book 3!!
This is the 2nd book in the hero series but can be read as a stand alone. I have to admit I wasn't found of Andrew in the first book but when I read one of the last scenes in that book I had to find out his story. What a story it was. I really enjoyed this book, we saw Andrew's story from 10 years ago and then present day. I cried a few times because the emotions were,so real and the story line was believable. Them chemistry was there and it was real. This story was about family and doing what Andrew thought was right and putting his own needs and feelings aside. I loved Tanner and my heart ached for him. This was a beautiful story and I was glad to see characters from the previous book. Looking forward to the next book and to see what happens next.
I received a copy to read and review for Inked Rainbow Reads
I love a second chance love story and this is one of the best. Ten years ago when Andrew and Josh's father died so did Andrew's dreams of travel with his best friend and lover Tanner. Andrew felt compelled to stay home to finish raising his brother but he didn't want to stunt Tanner's own dreams so Andrew cut ties with Tanner and Tanner left. Tanner realized what a mistake it had been to not have Andrew in his life so after ten years he returns home determined to right this wrong. Josh is grown with a love of his own so why can't Andrew have his own life and his own dreams now? Andrew's Promise is a sweet love story with mild angst and a long delayed opportunity for love. I enjoyed it so much and believe any lover of gay romance will also love it.
I like this book way better than the first one (Charlie’s Hero), I love the friends to lovers story and I am intrigued to Andrew, I thought he is a homophobe like he acts on the first book, it ends up that he is also gay and always have been in love with his best friend, Tanner. Tanner came back after 10 years. And he always loved Andrew, hoping that he is available and also he came out of the closet.
I love this Andrew, the brother and the lover. He sacrificed so much for his brother, his dream, his happiness and Tanner. I’m glad that he made his dream come true.
I only complain about this book is that it should have been longer, especially the present one. I am craving for more.
Wow! I loved this story. Couldn't wait to read it after reading Charlie's Hero. I loved the backstory in Part 1. It was great to see how the boys' friendship inevitably turned to love. Starting with Part 2, we pick up where Charlie's Hero left off. It was irritating to see Andrew's worry about telling Josh (same story in reverse as the first book). However, I'm glad Andrew was not conflicted about his feelings for Tanner. He didn't hesitate to show Tanner exactly how he felt and watching him discover that love and romance was great.
This was a really sweet story. It was sad that Andrew felt he had to make such a difficult choice at such a young age, and I wish Tanner had not stayed away so long. I’m so glad they didn’t waste any time when they got back together. Andrew knew what he wanted and he went for it. Unfortunately, I did not realize the connection between Josh and Andrew and I read this book first. I will definitely go back and read Josh’s story.
3.5 stars. This story was more about the past of Andrew, Josh and Tanner. It was kind of nice to see some history for them and it added to their characters. It gave the reasons why Andrew acted the way he did before Josh came out. It was too much for me though. Nearly half the book was about the past and it was loaded with a lot of detail. I felt shortchanged when Tanner comes back and he and Andrew get back together.
Their ten year separation and the reasons for it were pretty much dismissed with short conversation. Andrew seems to do a complete 180 from the gloomy, overbearing personality he had in the first book. I still think it's strange that Andrew and Josh seemed to have never discussed much personal details. Also, that Andrew never said anything about himself after Josh came out. There was no real tension, no angst in the story, which can be a good thing. Mostly some additional characters were introduced. I would guess the next story is about Simon and Patrick and might have a little suspense. I'll likely read that one too!
If you love second chances; if you love the concept of love conquers all, and you love happy ever afters, this book is for you!
The only reason this book didn't get 4 stars for me was a personal preference of angst. I typically prefer lots of angst and heartbreaking emotion in a book, and while this one did make me tear up at the end, I wished there was more.
To the author specifically, I will look into your other books, because I really enjoyed this one!
First things first….. keep a tissue nearby for this one!! This is book two in the Heroes series, and we met Andrew in book 1 – Charlie’s Hero, but this is his story…….
Everything was fine in Andrews’s life….. he had his best friend Tanner, he lived at home with his dad and brother, and he was busy planning his dream road trip he was taking with Tanner. He was so excited, and was aware of new feelings he had inside when he was close to Tanner, and hoped he could find out exactly what they meant. Suddenly everything changes, and Andrews life is completely turned upside down, by a tragedy no-one was expecting. Then he had to make the hardest decision of his life, one which he believed would protect his little brother, and he sacrificed his happiness to do so.
As I read this part of the story, I could see both sides, as this book has been written from both Andrew’s and Tanner’s point of view. You could feel the grief and sorrow pouring from Andrew as he was making the decisions, and I have to say I just wanted to reach in and hug him. From whispers he had heard, he did the only thing he thought open to him at the time, and that was to push Tanner away and try and build a new life for himself and his little brother. Tanner was devastated by Andrews’s rejection, and rather than try and talk to him he embarked on the road trip alone.
Then we fast forward ten years, and Tanner returns to the town. Although he has been away, he has never forgotten Andrew (who he affectionately calls Drew), and wants to see if there is any chance that they could finally be together. Things are strained between the two at their first meeting, and it is clear to Tanner that he must speak to Drew alone to try and clear the air. Both seem to have resentment inside them, but when they finally sit and talk calmly together, you can then see the whole picture and so can they, and neither can hold their resentment for long.
Tanner and Drew seem to talk more this time, and I think that was a big part of their downfall ten years earlier. Tanner shows Drew the case he took with him on the trip of a lifetime, and tells Drew that it was fun to go to all of the places, but it wasn’t his dream trip as he wasn’t there with him. Tanner tells Drew that it is time for them to make new dreams together and see where it all goes….. but at the same time, Tanner is also devastated to learn that Drew has still not told anybody he is gay, not even his brother Josh.
You realise that Drew is not ashamed of who and what he is, but although his brother is gay himself, he is terrified that admitting he too is gay would mean he would then lose his brother, and that he cannot bear the thought of. As Tanner and Drew grow closer together, Drew realises that he must tell his brother the truth, and you can feel the tension coming off the page as he gathers up the courage to speak to him….. only to find that Josh already knew, and then Drew is embarrassed when Josh reveals how he found out!! Drew is so relieved to find he will not lose his brother, and this in turn seems to relax Drew even more in his relationship with Tanner.
I absolutely loved the Andrews Story, it was filled with emotion, and from the way the Nic Starr wrote this you could feel this emotion, and see how both Tanner and Drew were feeling. At some points reading the book, I was willing them to take a chance on each other, but I could also fully understand why Andrew took the route that he did ten years earlier….. then the trouble is, you then make things harder for yourself when you want people to see you for who you are properly, and not what you have been portraying.
I really did enjoy this book, and from the way it finishes I believe that there will hopefully be another book in the series, so we can see what happens in the future to Drew and Tanner, plus Charlie and Josh.

Review first posts on Nautical Star Books. I received one copy of this book at no charge from the author in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
At the end of Charlie’s Hero, you have been given a first impression of Andrew that is maybe not so great. For a lot of the book he seemed angry and possibly homophobic. Things take a turn at the very end of Charlie’s Hero and you are left wondering who Andrew really is. Andrew’s Promise will help explain what drives him and shows you a rediscovery of a love lost many years ago.
Andrew’s Promise begins several years before Charlie’s Hero takes place. The author paints a picture of an amazingly happy family. Andrew is incredibly close to both his brother and his father and life is a bowl of cherries. He and his best friend Tanner are planning a long road trip and things couldn’t be more perfect. Tragic events have Andrew’s life taking a turn for the worse and while trying to recover the pieces, Andrew pushes Tanner away.
Ten years later, Tanner returns to see if he can make something of the first love he left behind. This rekindling of the relationship between Andrew and Tanner makes up the second half of the book and picks up right where Charlie’s Hero left off.
I really like the way that the author told this story. Rather than random flashbacks, the book itself is divided into two time periods. This allowed for so much more of Andrew’s past story to be portrayed. Everything was so perfect for Andrew at the beginning of Andrew’s Promise. His family loved him, his friendship with Tanner was so close….and a bit confusing to Andrew since he really just thought they were friends. His grief when tragedy struck and his realization that Tanner could be so much more than just a friend really tugged at my heartstrings. After reading this portion of the story, you really understand how he became the man he is in Charlie’s Hero.
Andrew’s Promise is told from both characters points of view. I think I got to know Andrew a bit better than Tanner but the author does a good job of giving you a glimpse into each character’s inner thoughts and feelings. Tanner was devastated by Andrew’ rejected but was determined to find out if they could recapture what they once lost. It isn’t easy sailing…they have a lot of lost time to make up for and things are strained a bit at first. Thankfully, they actually manage to talk things out and take those first hesitant steps towards rekindling their feelings.
The major conflict in Andrew’s Promise is really Andrew’s coming out. He has omitted any mention of his sexuality for a long time and is worried how that will effect his relationship with his brother. Nic is gay….and Andrew is worried that his omission all these years will cause Nic to hate him. There is a fair amount of angst and stress about it but things work out nicely and Andrew gets his happily ever after.
The chemistry between Andrew and Tanner is pretty hot and I am a huge fan of the ‘friends to lovers’ idea. There is a nice balance of camaraderie and friendship, along with passion and angst and true love forever. The secondary characters were well developed and I think I see another book in the future for a couple of them!
If I could have made one change in this story I think I would have liked MORE of Andrew and Tanner in the present time. Not less of them in the past, because you really need that to see who Andrew truly is. But, I think I would have liked to see them spend more time getting to know you after their 10 year separation.
Overall, though, Andrew’s Promise is a wonderful story that helps explain who Andrew really is and lets the reader follow along as he falls back in love with his best friend.

When I read Charlie's Hero, it was the first book I'd read by Nic Starr. I liked it. It was good and well written. I liked the characters, but when I got to the end, I knew I needed to read Andrew's story. I connected with him immediately. I LOVED this book. The first half of the book is told 10 years in the past. We get to see the friendship Drew and Tanner share. We hear all about the six month trip across the country Drew and Tanner have planned. We witness the love that is shared between the close knit family of Drew, Josh and their father. Nic let's us witness the heartbreaking tragedy these young men faced with loosing their father. Tanner is there for not only Drew, but Josh as well. Until Drew can't hide his feelings anymore, and pushes Tanner away.
We then fast forward 10 years ahead to the present. To Tanner's return to their small town. Can they pick up where the left off and right the wrongs they have both made in the past?
I'm going to say it again. I LOVED this book. I picked it up and I was hooked from the first sentence. I. Couldn't. Put. It. Down!! It was filled with heartbreak, sweetness, laughter, passion, tenderness, and above all else, love. I loved that the first half of that the book was in the past. I didn't feel like I missed anything, like I would have, had it had been told through flashbacks or conversations between the MC's. I usually don't care for this, but I loved watching Drew and Tanner fall in love, even if they didn't admit it.
The chemistry between them was astronomical. The love they shared came up off the pages like steam. You could feel it in the air, it was so strong. I felt I knew them. I can't say it enough. I just connected so strongly with these characters. I love Nic's writing. It flows well and she kept me hanging on to every word. Friends to Lovers in my favorite storyline, and this was done beautifully.
The characters were extremely likable and well developed. I loved seeing Josh and Charlie again.
This book goes back to the time prior to events in Charlie's Hero, back to before Josh and Andrew's father died and left Andrew the man of the house. I start with this because it was this tragic event that was a catalyst for not only the way Josh was in book 1, but it explains so much more about Andrew and his relationship with his brother.
When Andrew and Josh's dad died, custody of a then sixteen year old Josh went to Andrew, who immediately put his life on hold. Nothing mattered but raising his little brother. A trip had been in the works with his best friend Tanner as soon as they graduated, but now, Andrew can't leave Josh, he has to be a father figure, the man of the house. While all this is going on, Andrew starts to realize that his feelings for Tanner have shifted somewhere along the way. He's very confused by his attraction to Tanner and subsequent jealousy when another guy approaches Tanner. Still, Andrew remains focused on Josh and sends Tanner off on their planned trip alone. He admits his feelings first, which only make it that much harder for Tanner.
Ten years later Tanner moves back to town. He never got over his first true love, his best friend Andrew. And Andrew never forgot about him either. A comment someone made in passing a decade prior set events in motion, and this is how it played out. Can a decades old friendship rebuild the trust between these two men that are still obviously in love with each other?
With the ending in book one I had to read this book, like immediately, so I did. It was nice to have some blanks filled and and some unanswered questions resolved. I loved the relationship between Tanner and Andrew, the way it slowly grew. I mean, they knew they loved each other, that wasn't the problem. The story was very well written. The right amount of angst and insecurity, emotional highs and lows, everything was balanced out from start to finish. The story flowed well as well, I devoured it in one setting. Once you read that first page, you'll be hooked, I'm certain.
A must read for anyone that likes stories where the MC's lose their way, but eventually find their way back to each other. Sort of a hard sought HEA.
I almost didn't read this one as Andrew wasn't my favourite in the first book but I'm so glad I changed my mind as I really liked it!
The first part of the book takes place 10 years ago, it shows the relationships between Andrew, Josh and their dad and Andrew and Tanner. We already know from the first book that Andrew and Josh's dad passes away and Andrew steps up to raise his 15 year old brother at the age of 21. Unfortunately while he does a great job raising Josh he does it at the cost of a potential relationship with Tanner ):
The second part of the book is present day and Tanner moves back to town. Tanner has a plan put together to win back Drew and won't stop until he does...fortunately for us it doesn't take much to make Drew his(:
I really liked that once they got together at the BBQ they were just pretty much together, no crazy situations that tear them apart, no misunderstandings or hard feelings...just a genuine, deep rooted, rekindled friendship that leads to love. I love that they finally got their road-trip!!
Big news for Charlie and Josh
The only thing that I didn't love was the sex talk between these boys seemed a bit robotic almost...the rest of the time they were fine!
