Piggyback's Collector's Edition Guide for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a lavishly-produced tome with many insights, illustrations and key walkthrough information, but with a handful of problems that keep it from achieving true greatness.

Much like the previous hardcover guides produced by Piggyback, this continues the trend of "official" MGS walkthroughs. A large chunk of the guide (50+ pages) is devoted to explaining key gameplay mechanics like bullet drop distance, stealth tactics and more. Each mission gets two-to-three pages devoted to it, with full map illustrations, speedrun tactics and effective strategies. There's a massive number of development charts for everything in the game, and there's also a 36-page art gallery with illustrations by Yoji Shinkawa and brief commentary by Hideo Kojima (to say nothing of the lithograph that comes with the book).

It really is a complete/turnkey walkthrough in every sense of the word, and it's carefully written so as to not spoil any story elements earlier than intended. There are a lot of nice illustrations and maps throughout the pages, including explanations of key buddy mechanics and diagrams on how to obtain the goodies found throughout Mother Base and the rest of the gameworld.

That being said, there are a couple of deficiencies here. It's almost unbelievable that Konami refused to give permission to Piggyback to detail the contents of Mission 46 ("Truth: The Man Who Sold The World"). That's some Final Fantasy X--Bradygames-guide-level bullshit. Telling people that you won't reveal how to unlock the mission (in actuality, you just keep doing Side Ops for a while until it opens) or what it entails (a twist that could be easily guessed by anyone but the most ignorant players) is disingenuous to the extreme, and the fact that it refers you to another website for "further updates" is a slap in the face.

I also found that the quality of the art gallery and lithograph was not as good as the MGS 4: Guns of the Patriots guide. While the illustrations themselves are just as good as before, there's very little Kojima commentary, and the litho they give feels cheap considering the paper they used. A far cry from MGS 4's glossy "Old Snake" litho.

Still, this is an incredible guide that would look great on any player's bookshelf. It didn't really need any bells and whistles to make it worth purchasing, but the litho and included full-color foldout map were very nice.

Piggyback's MGS V guide is well worth a purchase and your time. Definitely check it out if you get the chance.

My way of completing missions is still the best though!!!
