Despite being nine months into a zombie apocalypse, life had taken a fortunate turn for Mike Robson and Natalie Barzagan. Not only had their group retrieved the vaccine for the Zombie Virus from the underground military facility at Site R, they had found love with each other. That optimism is short-lived. When the group returns to its camp, a rape gang has destroyed the compound, murdered their friends, and kidnapped one of the young women.
With everything they have achieved now destroyed, Robson makes the fateful decision to split his group. As he organizes a desperate attempt to rescue their friend from the rape gang, Natalie leads her Angels through a rotter-infested nation to bring the vaccine to the government-in-exile on Omaha. Both groups soon discover that everything that has happened to them up to now cannot compare with the horrors they are about to encounter.

“Scott M. Baker has managed to bring together the best of what I love about end of the world, vampire and zombie tales in one glorious story. If you think zombie and vampire stories are overdone and there is not anything new you can do with them, Rotter World proves that theory wrong.” —Peter Schwotzer of Famous Monsters of Filmland

Hack, slash, blood, sweat & tears w/ a few vampires & zombies thrown in for good measure
Every now and again I overdose on reading zombie novels. If you know me well you know that I do love a good scary zombie story, but sometimes it’s just too much. If it wasn’t for Javon Bond whose zompoc books I read every now and again when I need a few giggles, I was thinking I was ready for another zombie hiatus. However, Scott Baker sent me one of his novels and as a Thank You, I began to read. Now I need to warn you, it is a gritty fast paced story with a gazillion characters, an interesting protagonist, gutsy empowered women, with almost more violence & gore than I could manage. I was 45% through the read when I realized I was getting hooked. There are a few vampires thrown in that I would have loved to read more about.
Why I became so invested in the story? I don’t know, other than evil, horrible bad guys, who were truly violently psychopathic, & I needed to know if truth and justice overcame evil. It really may sound silly but the story gets so very violent That I had to take a few breaks for a little respite. Now I am a former EMT, & disaster responder, use to dead bodies, guts, entrails, blood, sweat, & tears but the graphic violence was too much. It certainly isn’t what I would call YA science fiction & I would not recommend this to the high school set. The violence very graphically described extreme violence toward women, & I would not knowingly purchase a book enmeshed in rape culture. That said, I became so invested in the story, wanting good to prevail. I certainly am not the target demographic this was written for. I would have given this a 5 star rating if it wasn’t for the graphic violence. I think many women would find the novel offensive.
Oh My God! What a trip !!! Natalie and her ladies take the trip to bring the cure to the government! This book keeps you guessing and scared about what will be next !! What a beautiful heartbreaking zombie vampire apocalypse story! Scott Baker has such a way to make you love the characters !
I am loving these books. I’m ready to read the next one. You really feel a connection to the characters and you really want to knock the crap out of the bad guys. This story is well written & very entertaining. Don’t take my word for it…READ IT.
Great story. It has really believable characters that I enjoyed getting to know. It also has zombies and vampires as well as the most frightening villains of all, humans.
A very good read, and very realistic of what could happen during a zombie apocalypse. I am looking forward to reading the final installment of this trilogy!
The long awaited continuation of Rotter World, by Scott M Baker is finally here and I was privileged enough to be allowed the opportunity for an advanced read in return for a fair and honest review…..and here it is.
I thoroughly enjoyed Rotter Nation. #thatisall #theend
Just kidding, I have more to say, but I truly did enjoy this book. Rotter Nation picks up as our group, who had gone after the Zombie Virus, returns to their camp. To their horror they find that their “home” has been looted, destroyed and all but one has been murdered. The young woman left alive, Windows, is, unfortunately, taken with the raiders and we can, easily, guess that the fate of the others is more kind and forgiving then what she will be forced to endure. Our leader, Robson, decides to split the group sending Natalie and her Angels to the “government” to get the vaccination into hands that can, hopefully, create more and distribute it, while he takes the rest of the group, including the two remaining vampires, set out to rescue Windows and any other person who was taken by the rape gang.
I won’t go into further details of the planning and scheming that plays out as both groups heads their separate ways, because we all know that’s what will be happening. Trust me when I say there are definitely dead ends, undead and various snafus that our groups must contend with and, happily, not everyone makes it out alive. Did she just say ‘happily’? Yep, I love when characters get killed off, especially in a world where rotters walk. It’s realistic…it’s going to happen and sometimes it’s going to happen to the strongest member of the group. (I’m one of those who is waiting, patiently impatiently, for Daryl Dixon to die in The Walking Dead)
Much like its predecessor, Rotter Nation, has several characters, nearly all of whom have strong personalities and voices. It was the rare moment where I had to stop and ask myself, ‘which person is this and who’s group do they belong?’. One thing I did notice was that the vampires did not seem to have quite as much of a presence in book two as they did in book one, so I am left to assume book three may give them opportunity to have a fairly solid story line. The visual description of what we were to be “seeing”, as well as, the action sequences were well written and allowed me to feel a part of the action. I loved that there were some very tense moments where I held my breath slightly wondering what would happen. That being said, I will give a word of warning, while there is no graphic details of actual rape, it does happen and it is detailed enough that you get a good mental image of what the women went through, so if that is a touchy area for you, be warned.
The ending of Rotter Nation, was not as cleanly tied up as I felt Rotter World was, in that there was a bit more of a cliffhanger ending, but it still had a pretty solid ending. I have mentioned before, I prefer my series to have a fairly solid ending between books. I hate when books that are to be continued end with a major cliffhanger and then the author doesn’t even have the next book started.
Rotter Nation is another great book from the mind of Scott M Baker. I am truly looking forward to finding out how the series ends with book three.
Nine months into the apocalypse caused by the Zombie Virus that was unleashed by the vampires, Robson and his team successfully retrieve the vaccine from Site R, though they have suffered many losses. Upon returning to their camp, they find it completely destroyed and most of the people living there dead. They were the victims of a vicious rape gang that Robson’s team had a run-in with on the way to Site R. They must now pick up the pieces and find someplace new to start over again. They must also get the vaccine safely to the government-in-exile in Omaha and rescue a survivor from the gang. Baker has continued his post-apocalyptic world in a seamless fashion, introducing new characters while giving even more depth to returning ones. Robson is a real person, conflicted between doing the right thing and perhaps losing Natalie, his love, when he sends her and the Angels to Omaha with the vaccine. Robson, Natalie, Dravko, and other characters are all well-rounded, three-dimensional people (and vampires) who are easily relatable with their emotions and how they deal with the situations they find themselves in. They will draw real and visceral reactions from readers. The world has gone to hell and it is highly apparent in the vivid descriptions of both the areas traveled through by the now separate groups headed by Robson and Natalie, as well as the very bad people that have survived. And the world is just getting worse. Away from the relative safety of the camp, the now divided group find themselves facing far worse than they have previously seen. Baker’s story is compelling and suspenseful, holding the reader’s attention from beginning to end and the climax will leave you wanting more.
I received this book for free through GoodReads FirstReads competitions.
I thought that this was a really brilliant and awesome Zombie book! It is incredibly well written and shows what an amazing and talented writter Scott M Baker is. If you are someone who enjoys zombie books then this is definately the book for you! The majority of the story is done in the perspective of Mike Robson who is an officer of the law, this character is extremely well described by the author that you can actually very vividly picture him in your mind as you are reading the book. Another character that is featured is Natalie who is the leader of the Angel of Death, who are a group of people who she has taught how to take care of themselves and how to shoot a gun. She is also very well described and when you are reading about her you get a real sense of who the character is and how the author is wanting us to see her. I think that this book wouldn't be a good idea for readers younger than 18 due to there being a few sexual parts and mentions a rape gangs. I absolutely loved reading this book and could happily read this book many more times and I hope to read many more books by this author!
I won this through a Goodreads first reads giveaway.
I read about a chapter of this, but soon realized that this was actually part 2 of a series....not a stand alone book. The first book was unavailable through my library or interlibrary loan, so I was stuck. I can't stand reading series out of order, and the giveaway didn't mention anywhere (that I noticed) that this was part 2. Although I was intrigued by the fact that this book started out in my home state, I decided to pass it along to someone who wouldn't mind not reading the first book first.
An extraordinarily intense ride through a zombie apocalypse. A great cast of characters and action packed storyline. Follow our ragtag group as they try and survive the zombie apocalypse as well as the evils that men do in such times. Do not get too attached to any favorite character because they may not survive. Oh and by the way if zombies and the bad human element or not terrifying enough. Throw in a couple of vampires to the mix and have a good time surviving the apocalypse.
