Monsters Within

Red Creek, Massachusetts is a quiet town. Nothing ever happens, and nothing ever changes - a feature Saul Benton, local recluse and member of the Benton Vampire Clan, appreciates deeply.

Unfortunately for Saul, his peaceful existence is soon to be mercilessly destroyed. Evil is closing in on the Benton family and Red Creek, seeking to obliterate all Saul holds dear. Which makes Saul's attraction to Nikki Galimore, a mortal woman and brat extraordinaire, all the more inconvenient.

Too bad his heart did not seem to have received the memo.

Red Creek is like any other small town. Nothing ever happens, the town drunks hang out at the local bar, and town recluse that everyone speculates about. In Red Creek, Saul Benton is the town recluse and, unknowing to the townspeople, the local vampire. When Nikki Galimore witnesses Saul's inhuman strength, she knows he's something other than human. She decides to find out if her instincts are correct and shows up on Saul's doorstep. Saul is drawn to the human and feels things he thought long buried. When the town is stricken with mysterious deaths and bodies disappearing, Saul is afraid he isn't the only vampire in Red Creek and that places Nikki in mortal danger.

Victoria Knight does a great job in setting the backdrop for Red Creek. A sleepy little town where nothing ever happens. She introduces the key players, Nikki, Jason, Kyra, and Lester who play in role as the evil unfolds. She makes you feel sorry for Saul, even though he is a vampire, when she describes the interaction between Lester and Saul. You can't help but root for Saul and how he reacts to Lester's taunts. As the story unfolds, you realize Saul is lonely and the appearance of Nikki may be what saves him. The story does contain a few twists and turns and is different from how most vampire stories go. The story flows well and draws the reader in. The story does end on a cliffhanger, which is maddening, so I'm off to the book #2 to see what happens.

A new viewpoint on vampires and their lives and legends. Well-developed main characters with a gripping story that draws you in. An excellent cliffhanger at the end to make you want to read more and find out what happens next.

Saw this book on a bloggers top ten vampire read list, and I thought wow; as the blogger had J.R. Ward and some other big name authors on her list. So I decided to give this book a try. First off the synopsis says Red Creek Massachusetts. The book text gives Red Creek Tennessee as the location. So the problems begins. I guess I just have higher expectation when it comes to paranormal book crafting and world building. This book was all over the place and I got the feeling a lot of the character development stayed in the authors head, as it did not transfer to the page. I wish Indie authors would take the time to craft a story and not just rush to publish what they think is a good book. My five star authors are Ward, Singh, Briggs and Bishop to name a few, and this book comes no where near five stars. The story is choppy as if it was written as scenes and the author then needed to connect the various narratives she produced. The characters never connected with each other on the page. Ms. Knight gave me all the character details, but she didn't give me reason to connect with them. This disconnect caused the plot to fall flat and make little sense.

Things are strange in the small town of Red Creek. Everyone knows everyone and the rumors that spread are so far and close to the truth it's haunting.

Nikki is a carefree teen with many troubles. Her desire for knowledge of the unknown is leading her down a dark path of destruction. And then she meets a man. A vampire. And begins to fall deeper into the darkness, that she doesn't even realize it until she stares Death in his eyes.

I immediately downloaded Knight's second book when I got to the end of the first. This book had me on the edge of my seat when it came to the end. A must read!! I wasn't too much into paranormal reads and feared that a vampire love story would be boring with glittery vamps and silly teenagers. But this...this is something different. Buy it. Read it. Love it.

Not sure how to review this book, despite this book having 3 major crime (gruesome) well spaced incidents I could not connect with the characters.

Monsters Within is a good, quick read. I wish it had been longer, but since it’s the beginning of a series, I won’t hold that against anyone.

This book takes place in the quiet little town of Red Creek. Red Creek appears to be a stereotypical small town in many ways. Local drunks, local legends, and rumor mills abound. When Nikki accidently witnesses Saul, the town recluse, doing something unusual after being insulted by one of the local bar patrons, her interest is definitely piqued.

I felt kind of bad for Saul. His family’s history isn’t pleasant. He tries to avoid further complications by staying away from the townspeople as much as possible, which, in a way, may just be giving them more fuel to their rumor fire. It certainly doesn’t help to dispel the idea that he is a vampire. He just wants to be left alone in peace until it is his turn to feed according to the rules of which his kind follow.

Lester needs his ass handed to him. I really really didn’t like that guy. He’s the jerk in town that always is trying to give everyone else a hard time to make himself feel like he’s not a piece of worthless crap. He thinks harassing Saul is his God given right or something.

Nikki is kind of an idiot. I say that with love, because in a way I also admire her bravery. But her bravery could definitely get her killed under the wrong circumstances. I understand her being curious about Saul, but the lengths to which she went to get to know him were a bit much in my opinion. Though I did enjoy the way they eventually interacted as their mindsets evolved to more than just the very basic of ideas.

There is a bit of mystery in this book when people start showing up ripped to pieces. Being the town recluse, this makes Saul look immediately suspicious, but he insists he had nothing to do with it. The laws allow only one vampire family per territory, so either he’s lying or someone has invaded his territory.

The acting Sherriff, Kyra was a strange character to me. At times, she felt strong and smart, and other times she felt a little bit stalker-ish and weak. I will have to keep reading this series before I make a definite decision about how I feel about her. My feelings for her could go either way.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. It read quickly and easily. The storyline worked well with the author’s writing style. There is some gory violence, which doesn’t bother me at all, but consider yourself warned if you have a weak stomach! I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a new vampire series with a different take on vampire politics.

At first glance

I would recommend this because it is so different than what is typically out there. The girl was a breath of fresh air and the guy was such a commitment-phobe I was amused by it. I didn't really get into the horror of it and in some instances I felt like the guy was using her because of sex. Overall it is a good start and the characters are interesting.

I couldn't stop reading this book once I started! I found the author online by chance and we chatted about reading so she sent this book to my Kindle for me to read...I honestly didn't even know that it was about vampires. I started reading after work one evening and I was trying to figure out what type of monster was going around doing these things at the very beginning of the book. I suspected vampires but wasn't totally sure until Saul came into the picture. I find it interesting how authors of the paranormal make up the rules for their vampire clans/families. Saul can sleep and he can eat human food, etc. I really got into this book so much that when I was on the last page, I was so disappointed that it was over and that I don't have the next book in the series. I found that the Monsters Within was very thrilling, sexy, and a little scary at times! Well worth the read!

I'm very confused... but not in a bad way, really. I just... I don't even know where to begin, I'm still shocked/confused by the ending, but the story was good, although strange. It took a while to get started and by the time it did, the book was half finished; not much happened in this story, it seemed more like an introduction than anything. The author gives us a bit of a different take on vampires and vampiric culture.

The ending was awfully anti-climatic, literally as it were... damn was that some bad timing!! All I can say is be ready with the next book in the series, 'cuz yeah- major cliffhanger! I was intrigued enough to want to keep reading, at least the next installment and we'll go from there...

This story was nothing like what I was expecting, it drew me in and this made it a really quick read for me. I finished this book in one day because I just wanted to know how it was going to end. I was surprised at how bold Nikki was when confronting Saul with what she thinks she knows. The only thing I did not like about this book was that it ended very abruptly on somewhat of a cliffhanger. I have not decided if I will pick up book 2 yet.....I enjoyed this story but not sure if I am quite hooked enough to get into another series. I will probably pick up the next book sometime in the future, but am not ready for it right now...and will most likely re-read this one before I get the next. If you are looking for an unusual twist on a vampire story this is the book for you.

Wow.. talk about scary.. , not a book I would of picked to read on a normal day. But I was given this story for a honest review. And it a little gorey, definitely what nightmares are made of, there is death, but in the middle of it Nikki and Soal are find love and connection.. the only sad part it ends with a cliffhanger, but the great thing is the next 2 books are out. For price you won't be disappointed..

Normally I don't write actual reviews, but have GOT to check this one out! Not your typical vampire novel. It keeps you guessing right through to the very end. It's unique, sexy, and mysterious all in one! If you love paranormal romance novels then this is one for you! Victoria is an author that definitely deserves the praise!

It's hard to focus on so many characters at once but I did like how we were able to know what they felt and saw in their own different perspectives. This is a very fascinating book and a very good read.

The story idea is good

The story is a good idea but its like it was written by a horny teenager. I'm going to read the second book to see if the writing becomes more ADULT.

Was alright, a little bit confusing at first as the story was told in third person with no names at some stages before the names were dropped in later in the chapter.

Flat. Characters do stupid things. Way too much telling rather than showing. I was skimming at 20%.

There's a point in the book where Saul mentions unlocking his front door to lure someone inside. A few pages later he says that he's locking his front door for the night - for the first time ever. That sums this book up accurately.
