Sally Roth is an award-winning author of 20 or so popular books about birds, nature, and gardening, including the best-selling "Backyard Bird Feeder's Bible," and a contributing editor for "Birds & Blooms" magazine.

Her latest book is "An Eye on the Sparrow: The Bird Lover's Bible," which uses quotes from the Bible as a jumping-off point for examining the natural behavior of the birds behind those Scriptures. It's a bird book, and it's for everyone, religious or not.

Sally's also an enthusiastic public speaker, whether it's grabbing a stranger on the street ("Hey, want to see something cool?") or talking to an audience of hundreds ("Hey, want to see something cool?"). She'll be appearing in the Michiana area (northern Indiana/Michigan) in early spring of 2013, as well as other places.

She and her husband Matt Bartmann share their home in the high Rockies with two dogs, one cat, a family of pine squirrels, a hard-working packrat named Sisyphus, a spotted skunk who lives beneath the house, a well-fed bunch of birds at the feeder, and a stable of old Volvos.

As a beginner bird watcher, I have found 'Attracting Birds to Your Backyard' to be an incredibly helpful guide for bringing more feathered friends into my yard. The A-to-Z guide is filled with terrific tips and plans for building bird feeders, birdbaths, and birdhouses. I love the recipes it includes for making bird food, especially the Chickadee Doughnut Delights and Easy Bird Treat Mini-Muffins - once I make these I hope they'll be a hit with my new bird besties!

The book also includes a list of the 25 best plants to grow to attract birds to your yard, including hummingbird favorites like columbine and honeysuckle. It also helps you identify and attract over 50 different birds, and what their songs and antics really mean.

All in all, thanks to this book, I am sure my home and garden will be much more enjoyable! It's a must-read for anyone interested in attracting birds to their backyard sanctuary.

Sally Roth lives in southern Indiana in the county next door to me, and she writes a column in the local newspaper I love reading. When I learned she writes books, I visited my B&N to check them out.

I love watching the birds in my yard, and this book contained a lot of really good information and ideas. Don't let its A-Z format fool you - its not just a listing of facts. The sections contain pages of information and, drawings and diagrams fill them. Its formatting is very attractive and keeps you visually stimulated while you read.

Ultimately, the book makes bird watching lovers want to get creative in their yards!

We got this book at the library and I flipped through it as I unpacked it, like I normally do with anything bird-related. This book is really NEAT! A lot of bird books are sort of jargony, and for people who know more than I do all around about birdies. This book is plain English, well-organized, and super practical. I asked for it for my birthday!!

Loved it, great pictures and detailed descriptions of birds in my area, their calls and what they like to eat as well as what flowers to plant to attract them.
