A Mother’s Honour by Evelyn Hood is the beginning of a new series. Evelyn Hood is a born storyteller and nothing exemplifies that better than this story which takes place in the yeas following 1906 in Paisley, Scotland. Kirsty had run away from home years earlier when she had fallen pregnant and her father sent her to her aunt to have the baby. The plan had been to give the baby away, but she couldn’t envision that so as soon as the baby was born, she ran. Several years later, she met and married Matt who had a young son of his own. She grew to love him. Then, surprisingly, when her father died, she had inherited the house and the furniture building business. Alex and Ewan, their sons, were fully capable of doing the work. Matt knew nothing about furniture building but he saw himself as the master. Life went on with ups and downs, as life does.

Excellent story. Lots of smaller plots coming together to make a slice-of-life novel. The characters were excellent, not all likable, but all serving their purpose. Kirsty came into her own as Matt when downhill. Alex and Ewan had become men and had handled it differently. The girls were growing quickly, as well, but as yet have not really come into their own. Life was basically good for the little family, until things started changing. Some outside influences, some due to aging. It was an enjoyable read. Not great literature but enjoyable.

I was invited to read A Mother’s Honour by Boldwood Books. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #BoldwoodBooks #EvelynHood #AMothersHonour

A Mother’s Honour is a beautifully poignant novel set in Scotland, tracing Kirsty’s return to her father’s home eighteen years after being sent away. With a mix of apprehension about old wounds and determination to shoulder the responsibility of the family business, she arrives in Paisley alongside her husband Matt and their children. The story features a wide cast of characters who gradually find their place, weaving together the many strands of the narrative. The author skilfully portrays family dynamics, the emotional journeys of each character, and the deep-rooted themes of love, loyalty, and connection.

Kirsty must learn to cope with her husband’s declining health, his anger and frustrations, the shifting relationships between her sons, her daugher's growing up, and the truth surrounding her eldest child. Amidst these challenges, she reconnects with her passion for sewing, which becomes the beginning of her personal journey—one of self‑discovery, healing, and a renewed sense of purpose for both herself and her family. She builds strong bonds with her partners Jean and Rose, some unexpected and in the end, finds a circle of support that holds strong.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I truly appreciated her writing style and storytelling. A Mother's Honour is a deeply emotional read that sensitively explores the realities faced by women in the early 1900s—their resilience, their quiet strength, and the ways families can come together in times of need. I genuinely enjoyed reading this book.

In this new historical fiction title from Evelyn Hood, readers follow Kirsty Lennox as she returns to Paisley, Scotland, eighteen years after her father cast her out for getting pregnant. With her husband Matt and their eldest sons taking over the cabinet-making business, she takes on a part-time seamstress position and helps a friend with her secondhand clothing business. When an accident befalls the family and upsets the peace of the household, Kirsty must manage in-house rivalries, the threat someone from town poses to Kirsty, and the dangers to her ability to earn an income as her past comes back to haunt her present. The characters are well-written and have complicated relationships that move the story forward, while the historical details and setting add necessary challenges to their lives. The emotional beats are well-written and allow readers to sympathize with the characters, while the details in the storylines and setting fully immerse readers in the story. The challenges ahead of the characters complicate the story and increase the emotional stakes in ways which pull readers into the book, and fans of historical fiction novels will love this new novel from Evelyn Hood set in industrial twentieth century Scotland and its incredible characters.

A Mother’s Honour by Evelyn Hood is a truly enchanting read that offers a charming glimpse into Scottish village life in the early 1900s. Set in Paisley in 1905, the story is filled with precious details, endearing settings, and mostly honest, hardworking folk—along with a few intriguing characters who add depth and interest. I found the book impossible to put down; it’s sweet, comforting, and quietly absorbing.

One of my favorite elements was the storyline involving three women working together to create a dress shop business. This thread beautifully highlights friendship, determination, and women supporting one another during a time when such independence was hard-won. Kirsty Lennox’s journey, marked by hardship, resilience, and hope, is both tender and realistic.

I was delighted to discover Evelyn Hood, a prolific Scottish author whose novels celebrate small communities and everyday lives. She has passed away. Many thanks to Boldwood Books for republishing her work and making these treasures available to new readers.

The Lennox Family Saga Series #1

Paisley, Scotland. 1906. Eighteen years after being cast out by her father for falling pregnant, Kirsty Lennox returns to Paisley determined to lay the ghosts of the past to rest. Most of the townsfolk are happy to see Kirsty return, but one in particular is resentful of Kirsty's inheritance and seems determined to cause trouble for her.

Evelyn Hood was a prolific Scottish author. This story will mix with your emotions. Set in the early 1900s, this book tells how hard life was for most people back then. The characters are well-developed, the story line was good, and the pace was steady.I will be seeking out the next book as soon as it becomes available.

A Novel Well Worth Reading

The realistic characters and nicely laid out storyline kept this reader's attention from beginning to end. Author Evelyn Hood brought true artisan talents of yesteryear to the forefront, from weaving and woodworking to creatively giving used clothing a new life and styling said clothing to fit the wearer. Imagination and determination, plus hard-working, strong-minded women bucking societal expectations was inspiring. Lastly, this reader appreciated the tasteful writing.

I really enjoyed this book, a great plot and I enjoyed the time setting. It’s 1905 in Paisley and Kirsty is pregnant so she’s banished. Eighteen years later she returns with her husband Matt and her children. It’s tells you all the hardship that happened in the 1920’s, but with the great descriptions of the dresses, houses and life then it grips you from the start to the end. A great 4.5 star read. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for a copy.

I want to thank Netgalley and the autor for gifting me the ebook. I was able to find the audio version through my local library. This book was really really good. I read it in 24 hours. The story drawn me in and I loved all the characters and the authors writing. I find a lot of these types of books the author takes liberties and adds nonsense in it that would not have flied back in the day. But this author didn't and I really really appreciate that! Highly recommend!

I wanted to love this book, but couldn't get into it. The pacing was way too quick and I couldn't connect with the characters as they weren't developed enough and felt very flat.

Thanks to Boldwood Books and Evelyn Hood for my eARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.
