Candle thought it was over. Back to the status quo. That’s why, when a letter appears in his mailbox from someone he thought was dead, he’s dragged back into the middle of the whole mess.
He’ll have to scurry down to Texas to save the life of a man he doesn’t even know, because if he doesn’t, his wife and unborn child will again become targets.
The mystery spurring his quest grows deeper because everyone involved seems to be wearing a false face. And his supposedly-benevolent employers keep pushing him further and further from the truth. Their ulterior motives have to be at the heart of this mess, but can Candle find out why?
The clock ticks mercilessly on as he hurries toward the Mexican border, all while trying to puzzle the reasons why he’s been singled-out, and what’s driving all this death and destruction.
This second novella in the trilogy combines the action-packed chase thriller style with an amateur sleuth mystery, all told through protagonist Tucker Candle's unique and funny voice.

Once again we find Candle in some trouble! After the events of the last book, all Candle wants to do is settle down and forget everything. His wife is coming home and their baby is almost here. But it's Candle we are talking about!!! He always seems to fall into it unintentionally!!! When a letter from Kareem arrives telling Candle that he needs to save Kareems brother, he is ready to bin it, but it plays on his mind constantly. He ends up having to go to Texas anyway so decides to drop by and see this guy, what's the harm?? Right!! Wrong, Candle once again finds himself caught up in the action and on the run from some trigger happy people!
There isn't much more I can say about the plot because with it being such a short story, I'll inadvertently spoil something, so all I'll say is that we get a few answers, more questions, plenty of action and adventure, more characters, more twists and turns and pretty much more of everything in this one. It's a fast paced, intense and addictive read. I loved book 1 and am pretty much hooked with this edition.
The author has a way with his words that will immediately grab you and not let go. His characters are all well fleshed out and developed. Candle especially has grown a lot since the first one. He isn't as naive as he was and is becoming quite the hero. Heskett also manages to throw in unexpected moments that I never saw coming. This is a story, that once you start, you won't want to put it down. Also the ending!!! I totally need book 3 to see what happens next. It's a cliffhanger that has left me wanting much more!!
In all, this is an action packed sequel, and indeed, an action packed series. The authors style has gotten me curious about his other works. I can see him becoming a firm favourite!
William Coon was fantastic, again! He has a wide range of voices and gives each character their own. He really brought the book to life and I hope he is narrating book 3!!
*I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
Oh, I feel so bad for Mr. Heskett. He is undoubtedly hoping for many, many positive reviews for this book. I don't know if he's going to get them, though...at least not in a timely manner. The story is so good, and heats up to such a fevered pitch and ends with such an infuriatingly tense cliffhanger, that it places the reader in the impossible position of choosing between being a responsible reader and sharing a review, or feeding the addiction and rushing to download the final book in the series with shaking fingers. I had EVERY intention of being a responsible reader. I couldn't do it. I HAD to get my hands on the 3rd book (Both Ends Burning). I reasoned that I'd just get the 1st chapter or 2 behind me, then I'd come back and write my review. Nope. My husband dragged me off to bed sometime after midnight. I looked down to see I was more than 80% into the final installment at that point. I can't recommend this book enough (after reading Wounded Animals first, of course). GREAT story, GREAT writing...and completely deserving of glowing reviews. I DARE you to try to write yours out before moving on to Both Ends Burning, though...
This is the second part of a trilogy. The Whistleblower Saga is a mystery/action/adventure series. At least, I think that’s the best way to describe it. The stories are full of colorful words, characters, and plot twists. Everything is complicated. Nothing and nobody is what they seem.
The Legend of Kareem continues the story of the first book in the series, The Whistleblower. Our hero, Tucker Candle, thinks he has taken care of the mess that the bad guys (the people at the company called Intellicraft) have made. He’s living a normal life again—temporarily. The men who turned his life upside down have been quieted. Or, have they?
In this book, Candle is pulled back into the chaos that Intellicraft started. We learn more about the background of the mysterious Kareem. We also meet his brother. The reader is reacquainted with old antagonists and a host of shady new characters. This time, company representatives follow Candle to south Texas.
With this series, the reader rarely figures out a certain individual, or plotline. Once you think you’ve put your finger on it, you come up with only more questions. This is the perfect book for lovers of fast-paced mysteries.
The sequel to Wounded Animals begins with Tucker Candle’s pregnant wife Grace recovering in hospital. She has been rescued after her kidnap by members of IntelliCraft, the company for which Tucker worked. There still remain a lot of unanswered questions, who was Kareem, the man Tucker Candle met in the bar and why did he warn him about going to Dallas? Kareem leaves a letter for Tucker in which he tells him his brother, Omar is in danger. There is a new twist in the story, how is Heathcliff Candle, Tucker’s father involved with Kareem Haddadi and IntelliCraft? As is usual with him Tucker finds himself in the middle of a mystery that is fraught with dangers at every point. Among the thrills and the killings there was one heart-warming plot, Dog from the previous story is safe and loved and has found permanent home in the Candle family. Jim Heskett has an easy writing style that is witty and fast paced and there are plenty of twists to keep the reader hooked. Jim Heskett’s readers are left biting their finger nails as the book ends with a cliffhanger, we have to wait for part 3 before we know the conclusion!
Again Wow ! Read the first book and then this one and you won't be able to wait to read the third one ! A continuation of the wild ride from book one ! You just have to read this series !
Candle believes his friend Kareem is dead - possibly murdered - as a result of his trying to help Candle against IntelliCraft, in the second fantastic book in the Whistleblower Trilogy series by the incredibly versatile Jim Heskett.
As the plot thickens the various characters are developed and rounded out in an intriguing manner that will thrill and keep you on the edge of your seat. Who can Candle trust? Is Kareem really dead and if so, can his brother Omar bring clarity and any further information and support that Kareem would have delivered himself, if he were able to? As he fears for the lives of his abducted wife Grace and their unborn baby, what will Candle decide to do next? Are his loved ones still alive, is the main question Candle must decide before acting further against his evil former paymasters? When they offer him a possible chance to find out and rescue Grace, why does Candle agree to go to Texas? What happens near the Mexican border there? When things seem completely against Candle and his life is falling apart, what can he do to make such a life or death decision? Get Legend of Kareem by Jim Heskett today and find out for yourself!
The Legend o Kareem is the middle book of the Whistleblower Trilogy, so fair warning, it's got a cliffhanger the size of Niagara Falls for an ending. This is the story of a young, soon to be father's quest to wrap up his father's estate and fulfill a debt to a dead acquaintance which leads to murder, mayhem and an action packed roller coaster ride that just keeps coming at you. Violence, mayhem and mystery prevail but this is a story you won't soon forget. If you're enjoy action-suspense stories with nasty villains and fearless heroes, this is one for you.
I enjoyed this series. The endings were a bit abrupt but picked up in the next part.A man is working for.a company where his boss seems to hate him. When he decides to quit his life is turned upside down.People around him die horrible deaths.Nothing is what it seems.A twisty turns fun read made better by narration by William Coon.I was provided this book by the author, narrator or publisher.
Just finished the second of four installments of Jim Heskett's Whistleblower series. First thought, and first book, I had my doubts but Jim has hooked me as in his other books! This is faster paced than the Micah Reed books, but just as intriguing. This book is Jim at his best.
The Whistleblower story continues. As Candle thinks that his formerly boring life can resume, he finds a mysterious letter from the dead. This cascades into page turning action that will make you want to know how it all ends. A great 2nd book in the series!
Book 2 of this trilogy was even better than book 1. Tension starts winding up from the first sentence and continues to build all the way to the explosive, totally unexpected end. Good stuff.
I got so caught up in reading Micah Reed books that I neglected Jim Heskett’s other books. Again, I read this in just a few hours. Great characters, great story line,. The 2 books could have easily been 1 longer book they are so entwined. I need to read the third book.
After reading the Wounded animals which is book one in the Whistleblower series, I was excited to continue this series. I wanted to know more, no I needed to know more. This is one of the most action-packed books that I have ever read. Seriously, if something bad can happen to Tucker Candle, then it will-poor guy.
This book picks up where book one left off. Candle's wife, Grace, is in the hospital recovering from being drugged and held hostage in their neighbor's basement. The baby is fine, which was something I was curious about since she was kept drugged while pregnant. Then Candle finds a letter from the dead Kareem asking him to go to Texas to save his brother Omar. He also gets a call from his dad's attorney about a problem with his fathers estate, it seemed like everyone was trying to get him to Texas.
Stupidly, he went to Texas. I wouldn't have and I also would have told my husband no. He just go Grace back and she is recovering while also being pregnant, no he shouldn't have gone to Texas. Upon arriving he finds Omar and then the shit hit the fan. They get shot at multiple times and have to run for their lives trying to get Omar to Mexico.
This book digs deeper into the Kareem situation but he is still a mystery to me. Poor Candle is being told to trust all these different people and dosen't know who to really trust. It's a mess. I know, I wouldn't have tried so hard to keep Omar alive. That's awful to say but I wouldn't have. Actually, I wouldn't have gone to Texas in the first place. That plot twist at the end tells me that this story is just getting started
I am literally about to start the next in this series now. I highly recommend this series to anyone that likes a lot of action in their books.
The Legend of Kareem continues the story that began with Wounded Animals and is part 2 of The Whistleblower trilogy. Our protagonist, Tucker Candle, just wants to relax back home with his pregnant wife who is still recovering from the previous events, when he receives a letter from Kareem urging him to save his brother Omar. Thus, another adventure starts sending Tucker to Texas and on towards Mexico. This was one madcap road movie full of action and fantastic characters that Candle meets along the way. I loved his relationship and interactions with Omar. I ended up listening to the entire audio book in one go again. Jim Heskett's writing is so engaging, and William Coon's narration so easygoing and fun to listen to, plus there's so much happening, there's never a good moment to pause. The plot is full of twists and turns, sad moments, funny moments and great dialogue. Candle has developed quite a bit since his previous encounter with the bad guys and is more confident and hero-like but his observations and musings are just as witty. What I really appreciate about this action adventure series is its unpredictability. There were plenty of developments that came as complete surprises, and as this part ends with further questions, I need part 3 to find out how it'll all end for Tucker Candle! I received a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
Completely drawn into Tucker Candle’s life in Wounded Animals, I had to continue the journey in Jim Heskett’s follow on novel The Legend of Kareem. Any hopes I had to find out the reason for Candle’s harrowing experiences in the first novel were dashed pretty quickly after he is once more thrust into a situation he’s little prepared for. But instead of resolutions, the reader is whisked into a tension filled modern day North By Northwest road trip that would make Hitchcock proud.
Once again Heskett’s writing flows easily and keeps the pace of the story well. Candle’s straightforward narrative is once again filled with the dry sarcastic wit and self-deprecating realism that made the first book so good. There is no doubt that I will be reading the final installment of this thrilling series.
** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **
This book flew by for me...before I knew it, it was over.and I was like..WOW that was quick! I was super involved! Book 2 picks up where book 1 leaves off..Candle has rescued his wife...and things appear to be back to normal...and when Candle finds out his dad passed away, he has to make a trip to Texas again to settle his estate...before he goes he gets a mysterious letter from the passed away Kareem...asking him to protect his brother Omar...seems innocent right? Well everything goes crazy again causing poor Candle to have to run for his life and learning he works for a company that is super corrupt...and a family secret!!
'The Legend of Kareem' was definitely a wild adventure with a series of events that were full of mystery. The storyline was well written. Candle was put through a lot in the first book and he was pushed further in this book. He has been through more in a short amount of time than most people see in a lifetime, or three. Omar was quite the character. Quite mysterious. And then the cliffhanger... I need to read the last book in 'The Whistleblower Trilogy'. Soo many questions need answered. A great and thrilling read.
The first book in this series was a good book but this one was better. Normally the second book in a trilogy is bogged down with details and really nothing that has any meat to it. I can not say that about this one however, it would answer one question for the reader but give you two more.
This one does end with a major cliffhanger so the best thing I can say about that is I all ready have the last book at the ready.
This is a very exciting series. Tucker Candle, the hero, is such a likeable character and the many scrapes he gets into keeps you turning the pages. Not a standalone. I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
"Is the dog O.K?" Appointed as executor of his recently read father's will, Candle travels to Texas to answer some questions about the estate and to take possession of a small package to be delivered to Susan, a sister he had never heard of before, if he can find her. He also intends to honour a letter from Arden, now dead, to make sure that man's younger brother is safe. Of course, nothing quite goes to plan.
The body count continues to rise as the fears and confusion Candle had thought were over only escalate, leaving him even less able to make sense of what is happening and who can be trusted. Will no one tell him what is really going on? Good second story in this intriguing and exciting action thriller.
