While the setting of this book takes the characters through a portal to a different place, there's continuity, in that they continue dealing with the fallout from previous adventures - mainly Mik's PTSD (and maladaptive coping) from his trauma underground in the last book.
They have the opportunity to do the right thing, seize it with both hands, and bring all their skill and determination to bear, which is good to see after the disappointing loss of protagonism in the previous book.
I really like the series but each book seems to be really short. A lot of story in so little time and it keeps you engaged throughout the book. Can't wait to find the 7th book
