-4 stars. no pictures at all, but a lot of interesting recipes.

i do wish all these cholesterol cookbooks would just focus on low cholesterol recipes alone and not obsess with low sodium. i don't have high blood pressure, i don't retain fluids. and my medication makes me sweat profusely, so in summer i am constantly fighting dehydration and need lots of replacement electrolytes including sodium.

American Heart Association Healthy Fats, Low-Cholesterol Cookbook is a wonderful resource for anyone who wants to enjoy delicious food while being more mindful of the types of fats in their diet. The recipes are varied, approachable, and designed to make healthier cooking feel enjoyable rather than restrictive.

I especially appreciate the focus on flavorful meals instead of simply presenting a list of foods to avoid. The cookbook offers plenty of inspiration for everyday breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and other meals, making it easier to bring more variety into the kitchen.

I chose to review this book to refresh my heart healthy cooking skills for personal use. I was not disappointed with this 5th edition of the American Heart Association's cookbook.

There is an informative introduction entitled, 'Fats, Cholesterol, and Heart Health' which encourages readers to reduce their risk for heart attack and stroke by eating a heart-healthy diet and being physically active. The writers stress that managing risk means committing to a lifestyle utilizing the practices recommended.

The recipes shared include everything from 'soup to nuts' as they say! Each recipe includes nutritional information about calories, total fat, sodium, carbohydrates, protein, etc. I found some of the recipes confusing when the serving size was not provided. For example, the 'Country-Style Vegetable Soup' states it serves 10, but the serving size (portion) was not provided. I feel the addition of the exact serving size would support the book's tip about controlling portion size.

Another nice feature of the recipes were the 'Cook's Tip's' included with just about every recipe. These tips were valuable for cooks who have not yet prepared this type of food. For instance, on the above soup recipe the cook's tip says, "If you want the celery to retain its crunch, don't add it until about 10 minutes before the soup is ready." Helpful information for novice cooks.

Finally, I learned a lot about alternative oils to olive oil and canola oil. Different varieties of sesame oils which have a lot of flavor can be used in a smaller quantity because of their intense, distinct flavor. Using less is good as it reduces consumption of oils in the diet.

The list of recipes on my 'To Be Tried In My Kitchen' List is lengthy! The soup mentioned above, Gumbo with Greens and Ham, Stuffed Zucchini, Oatmeal-Fruit Muffins, Puffed Pancake with Apple-Cranberry Sauce, Breakfast Crostini, and Honey-Baked Pecan Peaches are just a few of the recipes I will try in my own kitchen.

The recipes are formatted in an easy-to-read manner. There are no color photos of the finished dishes as you see in most cookbooks. Rather, this is a practical, efficient guide designed to be used often in a home kitchen.

This book is highly recommended to cooks looking to create healthy, flavorful meals and desserts in their home kitchens as part of a heart healthy lifestyle.

NOTE FROM REVIEWER: I was given a paperback copy of this book by the publisher through the Blogging for Books review program in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own. I was not compensated in any manner for posting my review here or on any other site.

I happen to be one of the millions of Americans who teeter on the verge of cholesterol numbers that concern my doctor. The American Heart Association's Healthy Fats, Low-Cholesterol Cookbook arrived just in time for my final round of "please let me try diet and exercise" rather than medication plea to my doctor.

I am so thrilled with this cookbook, I cannot tell you!

The subtitle, Delicious Recipes To Help Reduce Bad Fats and Lower Your Cholesterol is spot on. These are some delicious recipes! We had already lowered the amount of red meats in our diet a couple of years ago, so I was very happy to have new poultry and fish/seafood recipes to try. One key, it seems to me, that runs throughout the book is the addition of spices that you might not have used or considered before which take away any and all sense of "missing out" where the fat content has been reduced or eliminated. For example, the recipe for Crispy Oven-Fried Chicken adds a bit of ginger along with the paprika when seasoning your meat. (p. 144) This is brilliant and we both enjoyed this little addition immensely.

You are going to find recipes for any and all times of day, types of foods, and diets. Yes, there are vegetarian dishes included. There are also breads, breakfast, and desserts!

What I found myself turning to and really using were the Appendixes at the back of the book. These include helpful tips and strategies for healthy shopping, healthy cooking, healthy dining out, and the science behind all recommendations. There are even sections of risk factors for heart disease and warning signs of heart attacks and stroke. This could potentially be some life saving information!!

I have had the wonderful opportunity to review many cookbooks. I love cookbooks, cooking, and eating! Healthy Fats, Low-Cholesterol Cookbook will be my main go-to cookbook for the foreseeable future. (Even when using others, I will have it open to the tips on making other recipes healthier and more heart friendly!) Thank you to Blogging For Books for the review copy I received in exchange for this honest review. You have helped to change our lives for the better!

A lot of us can use the information in the newly revised and updated edition of “Healthy Fats, Low-Cholesterol Cookbook” published by the American Heart Association. Having a mom who had a triple by-pass in her early 60’s definitely motivated me to check out this book. The 5th edition has 200 recipes – including 50 new ones that help you make healthier food choices every day. In addition to the recipes, the book offers easy to use strategies for healthier grocery shopping, cooking, dining out, and lifestyle recommendations. The Heart Association
The first chapter of the book gives you the essential s to eating well – most of us are familiar with these rules, but it is good to have the information repeated. Eat fruits and vegetables, more whole grains, fat-free or low-fat dairy products, and eat fish! The one page that really merits attention is portion control on page 16 – most of us overeat without even realizing it.
On to the recipes! One thing I did not like was the total lack of photographs – many people like to see what they are preparing, and it helps to entice you to try to prepare it. I did like the nutritional information about each dish which follows the recipe. Many of the recipes try to get you to try different spices to add flavor to your dish, without adding the salt. A chunky barley soup adds horseradish for flavor! Some of my favorites were the tilapia tacos with the roasted-tomato salsa, the seafood and lemon risotto, and the Greek style stewed chicken. The cherry pear turnovers using phyllo dough were also good.
I think to get the most out of the book, you have to be willing to really read it, and educate yourself on food labels and ingredient lists that are covered in Appendix A – healthy shopping strategies. If you are serious about heart health you have to find the best foods. Overall, this book is a solid choice for heart patients, people with heart disease in their family tree, and libraries. I received a copy of the book from “Blogging for Books” in exchange for an honest review.

This is the fifth edition of the heart healthy cookbook put out by the American Heart Association. It is filled with more than 200 recipes that are heart healthy. But it also provides information about the risks of heart disease, ways eat out healthfully, and what foods to look for or avoid.

The print is smaller than the cookbooks I usually use and the book is heavy with light weight paper. This allows for quite a bit of information and recipes to be packed into the book. It does, however, make it more difficult to use, in my opinion. There aren't any pictures or color inside the book. I was impressed with the amount and content of advice given. The recipes were simple and easy to make, the ingredients are the ones that can be found readily in any grocery store. Another plus was all of the nutritional information provided with each recipe. This would be helpful for anyone following a diet or trying to keep track of calories. Overall, this is a cookbook that I would recommend for its amount of easy to make recipes, helpful information, and nutritional information provided.

I received this book free of charge from Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest review.

Because we want to eat hearty meals sometimes, but I need to keep in mind & continue our Thrive- subcategory goals from January that was on "Healthy". That, combined with the high cholesterol I have, makes this the perfect cookbook for us! The recipes call for simple ingredients, nothing crazy. Photos and easy to follow instructions make all the difference! I would recommend this book, or buy it for anyone who needs to be on a low cholesterol cookbook, or for anyone looking to be healthier!
**I recieved all books complimentary from publishers, but these are my 100% honest opinons. **
