Never thought I'd rate a Roman-themed book so low, but this novel was pretty amateurish. Story held my interest, but writing was substandard. Modern names for the Britons irritated me all through--the heroine and her brother: Claire, Anne, Elizabeth, Eustice. I read through all 600+ pages to complete the story, but was annoyed by wooden characters. Any history was fleeting. The only thing I really liked was the title. I feel at least 30% could have been edited down to make a tighter plot. I did skim it though; it was MUCH too long.

I received this book via a Goodreads giveaway.

Unfortunately, I did not like this book. I really wanted to because of my fondness for the Roman Empire and its history, but I found it impossible to like the characters. Most (and there are many) remained nothing but a name and/or title without so much as a single distinguishing feature or mannerism aside from some beard-rubbing. Scene settings also suffered from the lack of description. Things improved somewhat during the last half of the novel, but it really became a problem for me. I also found the half-hearted attempts at romance to be unconvincing and rather disappointing, and the constant discussions of religion completely failed to engage me.

I wish the author well in his writing career, and I am sure there are others who will like his ancient military-based books better than I did.

I was a little hesitant going into this - it sounded interesting, but I was worried it would end up being dry. But this - this was something else. Prill has such a unique style. This wasn't like watching a movie or reading a book - it was like stepping through a portal to another time and watching everything as both a third party observer and as the General. The descriptions are so vivid you can see, heart, feel and almost smell everything. Before I knew it I was past part one, and not ready to put the book aside for even a brief break. If you're a fan of historical fiction, (not romance), you're going to fall in love with this book!

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway and I am so glad I did! I loved the story in this book and I felt like I was taken back to ancient Rome. It has 3 different stories that are spread across the vast Roman empire but they are all connected throughout the book. I love the way it was interwoven and the ending was phenomenal, I couldn't put it down! I felt I got to know the main character and I could understand his motivations and loved his growth throughout the book. I will admit that the story was slow at first (but it picked up) and the writing seemed a bit simple at times however I didn't mind because I was engrossed in the story. The fighting scenes were packed with detail and I could picture everything happening clearly as if I was in the battle. I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who loves to read historic fictions or who loves the Greco-Roman time period. I think Mr. Prill did a wonderful job for his debut book and I hope he continues writing as I can't wait to see what he puts forth next.
