The Digital Photography Book #5

Тайните на цифровата фотография - част 5: Фото рецепти

Rate this book
Scott Kelby, author of the top-selling digital photography book of all time, is back with an entirely new book in his popular series that picks up right where part 4 left off. It's more of that "Ah ha--so that's how they do it," straight-to-the-point, skip-the-technojargon stuff you can really use today that made part 1 so successful.
In parts 1 through 4 of this series, the most popular chapter in the book has always been the last chapter: "Photo Recipes to Help You Get 'The Shot'." In each of those chapters, Scott shows a final image and then describes how to get that type of shot.
Here, in part 5, he gives you what you've been waiting for: an entire book of nothing but those amazing photo recipes. But, he took it up a big notch by adding a behind-the-scenes photo for every single recipe. Now you can see exactly how it was done, so you can get that exact same look every time.
In these extra pages, each spread allows you to dig in a little deeper and really unlock the power of these recipes. Scott breaks each spread into four segments: (1) he explains exactly what you're seeing behind the scenes, (2) he lists all of his camera settings, and lens and lighting info--it's all there, (3) he gives you his thought process, so you learn exactly why he does it this way, and (4) he shares all the post-processing in Lightroom or Photoshop that goes on after the shoot (this is something other books leave out). Plus, the whole book is packed with tips and insights you won't find anywhere else.
This isn't a book of theory, full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts. This is a book on which button to push, which settings to use, and exactly how and when to use them. With around 100 of the most popular photographic "tricks of the trade," the entire book is designed to get you shooting like a pro starting today. You're gonna love it.

As the title says, it’s a recipe book. The author goes through the thought process behind each sample picture and shows us both the scene-settings and the final product. The book covers a wide range of topics: portraits, travel, weddings, architecture, flash photography (single, multiple, speedlites, strobes), light diffusion etc. Helpful for both amateurs and intermediate learners.

More of the same. I wouldn't say this has been a total waste of time, but a lot of the stuff I already knew, and advice on studio lighting is nearly useless to me, especially considering it's way too expensive.

I didn't realize this was Part 5 of a series when I picked it up at the library.

While it has good tips for lighting shots, it's clearly for people who know their way around a camera, have access to multiple lenses and can afford expensive lighting equipment.

I kind of like this books a lot

Easy to understand and easy to copy the methods used. It's also very easy to find what you are looking for. Heavenly free of technical mambo-jambo.

It's rare and very appreciated by me, when a non-fiction author has such an authentic voice in a technical book. His advice was good and applicable also.

This, volume five of Scott Kelby's "The Digital Photography Book" series, takes a slightly different approach but is no less successful. Here the theme is photo recipes with each two page spread, describing a finished photo in the context of camera settings, the thoughts behind the taking of the photo, and the post-processing. As to be expected, there is repetition but thanks to Kelby's good humor, ease, and generosity with knowledge it's all fresh and valuable. In this book I was especially taken with the many lighting schemes (mostly simple and affordable) for portraits, the technique for adding a texture layer in post-processing (believe it or not until now I had never found a concise description of the process) and, best of all, the secret for shooting with flash. I will buy volume six of this series whenever it turns up. Guaranteed.

Thanks for the giveaway! This is one of the most helpful photography books I've ever come across and I love the way it's structured. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and it covers a ton of possible situations. I'll have to check out the rest of the series.
