One Green Omelet, Please!

There is magic in a meal when it is loved!

Great fun with food! Who knew what lay within Jenny’s green omelet? Not Jenny, until she gave it some thought. Fields of green, chickens laying the eggs, cows providing milk for the cheese – all this and more went into her tasty brunch. She came out of the restaurant with a greater sense of appreciation for what she had eaten and what she will eat in the future. What will dinner hold?

For years I have wanted to do what I am doing now -- writing and illustrating my children's books. Electronic drawing pads and e-books have made it possible for me to create and publish my own books -- and do so in quantity. In the past, Harcourt Brace, Ten Speed Press, Thomas Nelson had only published a few.

The books were always squeezed in between art I needed to do to fill 26 Sally Huss Galleries (my degree was from USC in Fine Art); and licensing demands for clothing, greeting cards (American Greetings), purses, bibs, dinnerware, wallpaper; and the daily King Features Syndicated inspirational panel I do for newspapers called Happy Musings.

Through the years my art and writings have found their way into homes from Hollywood to The White House and perhaps even your house or your mother's.

Along with art, I have had a long history with tennis. In fact I was raised to be a champion (U.S. Junior and Wimbledon Champion, then a semi-finalist in the women's division at Wimbledonin singles and doubles). Later I became one of the top senior players in the country. This experience lead to my writing and illustrating a couple of books on the game -- EIGHT GOLDEN RULES FOR HOW TO PLAY YOUR BEST TENNIS (endorsed by Billie Jean King, Mary Carrillo, Dick Enberg, etc.) and LOVE LADIES LEAGUE TENNIS.

I mostly read the books of the French Philosopher Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov. For me, these present the clearest and most practical explanation of life and man's structure in it that I've come across. These light-filled pages send my heart soaring and give me food for my present work.

Presently I write, illustrate and paint in my Solana Beach, California studio where I live with my husband Marv. I also still play a bit of tennis and walk the beach daily.

I absolutely love healthy eating and being appreciative of where your healthy food came from. This book does this perfectly because it is teaching children to think about where the food they're eating came from, what they're putting into their tummies and learning to be thankful they have yummy food to eat. Wonderful children's book!!!

Adorable and educational! Besides being a cute story about a girl savoring her meal more than I ever could, it teaches kids to be thankful, plus it teaches where a lot of the things come from! My little girl loved it, and has been demanding omelets haha.

I love this book especially the rhyming text, a favorite of mine in kids books. The author takes readers to a restaurant with Jenny and her family, When jemmy orders her special omelette readers are the ones who get the fun explanation of the original sources of where the ingredients come from. This is a great book for not just fun, but for teaching. The author adds delightful pictures that help keep children's eyes as occupied as their minds. Something special this wonderful children's author does so well.

Summary-
This children's book is about a family that goes to brunch after church on a Sunday. The restaurant is described as a normal, family style restaurant that is not fancy or expensive. When they get to the restaurant it is crowded and noisy but that is ok with them so they order anyway. The little girl orders a green omelet. When she gets her food she notices that the restaurant gets quiet and nothing is happening around her. She then starts to think about where everything in her green omelet came from. She starts to think about the chicken that layed the egg used to make the omelet and then the spinach, broccoli and pea's came from a garden where the sun helped them grow to become food. The more she thought about it the more thankful she became of the food she was able to eat. When she finished her meal she realized all the talking and noise was back and that she was being thankful for her meal the whole time.
Themes-
A major theme throughout the book is being thankful for what you have and where it came from. One more theme is that even the little things in life are what make the best memories.
Personal response-
I love this book because it really makes you think about what you have and how grateful you should be for what you do have. It also reminds me that even the smallest moments in life can be the ones that have the greatest memories. Some of my favorite memories are eating dinner in the middle of the night with my family at a tiny restaurant or even at a fast food place. This book just reminded me about the small things in life.
Recommendation-
I would recommend this book because it is easy to follow along and it does teach children and even remind adults to take in everything and never miss an opportunity to make a memory.

Sally Huss never seems to run out of ideas or creativity for her books. This one involves a family who decide to go out for Sunday brunch at a restaurant called Honey's Café. Jenny narrates the story and explains her food choice. Quite a bit of humor in the diverse menu which includes a Swami Bowl and ingredients like bee pollen in coconut soup. Jenny chooses a green omelet, and immediately begins to imagine the origin of all the ingredients. She explores topics like the chickens who laid the eggs, how the vegetables grow, the soil and water that allowed them to grow, the cheese, and condiments that went into the finished product. She realizes the complexity involved in producing the food we eat.

Rhymes are clever and catchy. Words like raucous and catchy enrich a young child's vocabulary. Targeted for ages two to seven, this book is better oriented to school age children than toddlers and preschoolers even though the younger set will enjoy the pictures.

It's buy and they offer a variety of food choices. Silly at times.
Her meal appears to be alive! She discovers all the treasures hidden under it.

Sally Huss does a great job of showing us how to appreciate the blessing of the food we eat. Her character, Jenny, along with her parents visit a restaurant for lunch. The unusual menu choices has Jenny thinking of a tasty surprise; what she discovers is much deeper and encourages children and parents alike to appreciate where their food comes from and how to be thankful for the blessing of food. Rhyming stanzas will interest young children, but they may need help reading more technical words. Nice story and as of the writing of this review it was FREE for kindle users.

APPRECIATING FOOD
A simple but cute story for children from 2 to 7 years of age about the different foods they eat, where it comes from and made into a wonderful dish to enjoy. The illustrations are nicely done and overall the story is a great way for parents to talk and teach their children about the different foods they eat and where they get them.

I found this book a little odd even though the message was good. A girl goes to a restaurant and orders a green omelet. As she eats, she things about where all the different foods came from to make the omelet.
