One of Horror's most respected authors, Iain Rob Wright is the writer of more than forty books, many of them bestsellers. A previous Kindle All-Star and a mainstay in the horror charts, he is a prolific producer of unique and original stories. From his apocalyptic saga The Gates to his claustrophobic revenge thriller ASBO, Iain writes across a broad spectrum of sub genres, creating both beloved series and standalone titles.
With work available in several languages and in audio, Iain Rob Wright is one of the fastest rising stars in horror, but when not writing he is a dedicated family man. Father to Jack and Molly, and husband to Sally, he is often seen sharing his family memories with his fans on Facebook.
That was both terrifying and really funny at the same time. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Then I enjoyed the alternate version just as much. Reading them back to back made the story even more funny. Knowing matty Bob personally, I could actually see him doing half of this stuff. He's one of the reasons I'm holding myself back as a writer. I don't want him to become infatuated with me.
Iain Rob Wright continues his collection of horror stories based on the letters of the alphabet (and appropriately titled The A to Z of Horror) with “M Is for Matty-Bob,” by far his most unusual selection. While the frights in most of Wright’s tales derive from common universal fears like clowns, bugs, and large sea creatures, the terror in “M Is for Matty-Bob” isn’t all that common, and, frankly, isn’t all that terrifying. However, the story is one of the most innovative and funniest horror stories you’re likely to find.
The titular Matty-Bob is a dedicated, indeed, far too dedicated fan of a horror writer named Iain Rob Wright. Yes, Wright has put himself in the middle of the story, usually a bad sign, but here an inspired choice. For the horror in the story is that Matty-Bob just won’t leave Wright alone, graduating from sending the author e-mails containing rather disgusting photos of himself to showing up with a pizza and entering the author’s bathroom whilst Wright is taking a bath. That last encounter doesn’t lead to a dinner date but, rather, to an argument and fight between the two that winds up outside in Wright’s front yard, where the stark naked Wright has to defend himself from Matty-Bob’s overtures of friendship.
Although in the blurb on the Amazon page for “M Is for Matty-Bob,” Wright claims that the events in the story are true, tongue is firmly in cheek here, as Wright uses himself as the butt of as many jokes as the bizarrely annoying Matty-Bob. Along the way, Wright pokes fun at himself and his writing, while gleefully submitting to a number of indignities, most of them occurring while he’s in his birthday suit. Not all the jokes work, perhaps because of the difference in taste and sensibility between American and British humor, but plenty of them hit the mark, so that the story is quite amusing.
I would have given Wright’s description of his encounter with Matty-Bob four stars as a story, but, in the words of the infomercial, wait, wait there’s more, and it’s that “more” that elevates “M Is for Matty-Bob” into truly gonzo territory. It seems that, as one of the Easter eggs in the story, the crazed fan Matty-Bob is actually Matthew Cash aka Matty-Bob, a fellow horror writer and friend of Wright’s. Further, immediately after Wright’s story, Matty-Bob provides his own description of the encounter with Wright. It appears that author Cash contributed this part of the story to go along with his name and general description, which matches the title character’s description to a T.
The events that occur in both versions of the story are the same, even down to Wright’s and Matty-Bob’s dialogue, which appears identically in the two versions of the story. Not surprisingly, while the events that transpire are the same, Matty-Bob’s interpretation of them differs considerably from Wright’s and, at the same time, pretty much exonerates him completely from any guilt, at least in his own eyes, although readers are likely to come to a different conclusion. One thing that they will definitely conclude is that Matty-Bob’s version is far more bizarre yet pretty funny in its own right.
When Iain Rob Wright decides to change the pace in a collection of rather grisly and spooky tales, he does so in a big way. “M Is for Matty-Bob” is at the same time very funny, very creative, and extremely well-constructed with two authors working off the same factual template and coming up with wildly different takes on the same encounter. The story is a perfect send-up of books like Stephen King’s Misery (one of the numerous names and titles Wright incorporates into his story) yet highly innovative. You’ll find a number of scarier stories by Iain Rob Wright, both in this collection and elsewhere, but you won’t find many that are more creative or entertaining.
I enjoyed reading M is for Matty-Bob (A-Z of horror book 13) by Iain Rob Wright which depicts true-life inspired events with a smattering of tongue in cheek. There are two versions of this story and the second one is from Matty-Bob's point of view.
Iain was just getting on with his daily life as an author husband and Father to their ten month old baby Jack when one day Matty-Bob an unusual fan of Iain's starts sending him emails and disgusting photos of himself. He lets himself into Iain's home and right into his bathroom bearing a gift of a rather large pizza.
Iain is so shocked that he runs naked from his home scaring neighbourhood children as Matty-Bob is in hot pursuit of him. This was somewhat horrifying and comical like the Carry on films.
This book was very creepy and disturbing. But hilarious! I couldn't stop laughing. Lmfao @ “Eat it!” Matty-Bob screamed, shoving a slice of pizza into Iain’s mouth. “Eat my cock pizza, you liar.” Oh man, Matty-Bob is a nut job!
SPOILERS: Pretty silly. This tries too hard to be funny. The premise is the titular Matty Bob is a crazed fan of the author. The author being depicted as having the perfect life and being far more lauded and presumably wealthier than he is in real life. Stephen King’s Misery and IT are quite obviously referenced. Matty Bob basically comes to hang out with the author and causes havoc. Half the book is from the authors (presumably accurate) perspective, and the other from Matty- Bob’s which is basically that he was defending the author from an imaginary bad guy. The book ends with the author stating Matty Bob is real, in a mental institution and is still in touch with him. He also gives you a link to Matty Bob’s Facebook page. A cursory investigation reveals Matty Bob is Matthew Cash, another horror author who is also publishing an A-Z of horror, and is presumably friends with the author of this A-Z of horror series.

If you read the author's name at the top of this post, read the book description, and then asked 'wait, what?' Let me answer that question for you. Yes, this is a short story with the actual author as the protagonist. He even used his wife and son's real names! It was fun.
The story, as you may have guessed, is about a 'crazy' fan trespassing on his house and his personal boundaries one regular day. There are absolutely bizarre things that are in here, true, but this story made me laugh more than scared. I only learned later on by reading the description that it was actually inspired by true events in the author's life, unfortunately, so that's the only time I understood how this was meant to be a little creepy.
The story is very tongue-in-cheek. Iain has these imaginations of grandeur from the people around him about his occupation as a writer, his... organ, his works. That was a really fun element for sure, but, it was just too much for me I think. I know there's a comedy-horror genre that really works but maybe it didn't work for me this time because I just wasn't in the mood? I don't know.
I will say, I loved all the easter eggs. Shitting on other horror authors like Matt Shaw as a form of friendly banter really made me smile. I'm happy that Iain found a way to transform a scary situation for him into a comedic horror story. I hope he and his family moved on and are safer.
Included in this book is also the crazy fan's version of the story. Adds a great element of perspective and, again, more fun as it alludes that the crazy fan was driven to this whole situation by a rival author.
IRW loves his WRIGHTERS, his true fans. But in the spring of 2015, he met Matty-Bob... a mega fan of Anne Wilkes proportions. M is for Matty-Bob is the 13th installment in Iain Rob Wright's A-Z OF HORROR series, and the satirical short is full of dark humor, easter eggs, and nods to his genre brothers. If you're friends with 'the gang' on Facebook, you'll get a kick out of the way this SS is written, and the characters included. My one regret about this review is not being able to find the picture of “Matty Bob’s” naked torso with the written lipstick message on it. I KNOW it exists – I saw the pic before reading this book, and it really put Matty Bob‘s character into my memory bank, and almost caused me to block him on Facebook >.< hahahahaha! The book also includes Matty Bob’s side of the story at the end, and in true HE SAID / SHE SAID form… it makes you wonder who the true psycho really is. When reached for comment, the author had only this to say… “DO NOT READ THIS BOOK, IT’S A LIE! I NEVER HAVE MEAT ON MY PIZZA!” ~ Matthew Cash See the full review w/pics, and join the discussion on my Bloody Book Blog.

Rating: 5*
Synopsis: Iain Rob Wright was a young author, trying to support his family by making a name for himself in the Horror genre. He was gathering fans quickly. But when Iain met a fan named Matty-Bob, things became stranger than fiction. The horror in his life became more than just the words in his books.
Review: Oh my! I have just finished this latest instalment in the A-Z of Horror and I have tears rolling down my face. This had me laughing out loud and completely grossed out in equal measure, it's definitely the best one yet. Several parts will no doubt give me nightmares, but I won't give the game away. The only thing I'll say is that I doubt I'll ever eat pizza again!
I gave this rating because Mr Wright you game away the ending to Savage. Really that was rude. And you mentioned it twice. Spoiler give away, very not nice. I haven't read that one yet. But as usual the writing was good. Thank you. On to some more great reading. Finish out your short stories A-Z. Not in in a hurry to read Savage . Ummm.
I definitely recommend this to fans of modern horror! I love every author mentioned throughout the story and cannot wait to read more of all of their work! YAY for M!
