C. S. Lewis is loved by many Latter- day Saints who are intrigued by insights in his books that parallel LDS doctrines. In this inspiring presentation, S. Michael Wilcox discusses Lewis's perspectives on such topics as: * our ability to become like God * the "divine homesickness" inside each of us that only God can satisfy * God's desire to pour happiness into the hollow of our souls * how to avoid today's "Turkish delights," the obstacles to happiness that Satan puts in our path You'll love this discussion about one of the greatest Christian writers by a gifted teacher and storyteller.
S. Michael Wilcox is an instructor at the institute of religion adjacent to the University of Utah. A frequent speaker at Brigham Young University Education Week, Michael also conducts tours of the Holy Land, Church history sites, Europe, China, and Central America. He received a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Brigham Young University, a master’s in media from the University of Arizona, and his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in educational philosophy. He is the author of House of Glory and When Your Prayers Seem Unanswered.
This is not a "book" but a talk he gave about C.S. Lewis. I thought it was really well thought out & enjoyed the connections he presented. I thought it felt a little disjointed because he was constantly recounting where the sources he was quoting were from.
When he speaks about the horse, Bree, in "The Horse and His Boy", the horse says to Aslan, "You are so beautiful, you can eat me if you like. I would rather be eaten by you than fed by any other." She would rather be swallowed up in Christ than fed by any other source.
I love C.S. Lewis and S. Michael Wilcox so this book was a natural for me to pick up. I didn't know that Wilcox had written his PhD thesis on the correlation between Lewis's book particularly the Chronicles of Naria and Mormon doctrine. This is a great read for those people that love both authors.
I listened to this as preparation for reading The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe aloud to my children. I’ve read a number of C. S Lewis books and I would suggest skipping this and just reading his original works, but this was a quick review which quoted often from the chronicles of narnia, the great divorce, the screwtape letters, mere Christianity, etc.
This book (lecture actually) was written for me! It had all the elements that I love. C.S. Lewis, fantasy, philosophy, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. S Michael Wilcox knows what he's talking about, and I was hanging on every word. I'll read this again immediately.
There's some great teaching here which can help to understand C.S. Lewis's writing and symbolism. Lewis was a man who did his best to bring people to Christ through his writings.
I always enjoy this author and I also love C S Lewis so a discussion of C S Lewis’s life and views on Christianity was great. I will continue to read and enjoy these authors.
This book-on-CD was excellent! Very spiritual talks by Michael Wilcox about the Atonement of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and how He never gives up on us. He references most of C.S. Lewis' books and explains much about C.S. Lewis' life and struggles with religion, God, and his eventual acceptance of Christianity and God--after a period of unbelief in his life. This was very spiritual for me to listen to. I want my family to listen to this because it's so interesting and helpful.
This is a talk given to an LDS audience. However, the insights are so helpful I would think that almost anyone could benefit from this talk about Narnia and Lewis's other books and the spiritual aspects that Lewis was expressing. I will be referring to this audio CD when I am looking for insightful understandings as I read more of C.S. Lewis's works.
There is so much wonderfulness (is that a word? it should be) on this cd that I am going to have to listen to it at least 3 more times. It's deep, yet simple. The way Wilcox brings Lewis's many stories together is amazing.
Wow, what a great talk on CD about CS Lewis. I loved hearing about CS Lewis' conversion to Christianity. Dr. Wilcox does a great job at sharing all that he learned about Lewis when he wrote his dissertation on this man. A MUST listen to!!!
I loved this set of lectures! I have always loved C S Lewis and it was great to hear his life sketch and the truths he taught from someone who knows him so well. Wilcox convinced me to read some more of his stuff.
If you love CS Lewis you will love this LDS interpretation. S. Michael Wilcox is an amazing author and he is by far my favorite when it comes to connecting real life to what we read and study.
Another quick easy read from Michael Wilcox. He references CS Lewis...his favorite and one of mine too! Very insightful! On CD his voice is so hypnotic.
