Elizabeth was born and raised in a nameless and secretive worldwide cult that claims exclusive origin from the New Testament apostolic ministry and blatantly describes all other churches as 'false'. A fourth generation member, she professed faith at the age of sixteen and fully intended to remain there, even when she discovered that the system she believed in was based on a lie. A love story both human and divine, a journey from spiritual bondage to freedom in Christ; this confronting and deeply personal account gives an inside perspective into the mindset of cult members, and reveals the fear and trauma associated with being forced to investigate your own beliefs even if it could mean destroying the very foundations of everything you believe.
A well written book about the church/cult I grew up in. I’ve read a handful of books about it, and this is the best I’ve read so far!
The church/cult is very hidden and doesn’t have a name - instead referring to themselves as “The Way” (Jesus’ way). They claim to be from the very beginning and started by Jesus himself, but the group was actually formed by a man named William Irving in 1897. Their main points of doctrine are their meetings in homes and homeless/penniless preachers (workers). They believe that their church is the only way into heaven and that all other people, Christians included, aren’t saved.
I thought this author did a wonderful job throughly explaining the church/cult, while also explaining Christianity, and the vast difference between the two. She’s encouraged me to write more about my experiences and (maybe) one day share them too.
If you’re interested in learning more, Wikipedia the “Two by Twos”, or read this book! Interesting caveat - this is not a small group of people. There are “friends” (members) worldwide and a handful in most towns. Chances are, you know someone who is/was a 2x2!
Great book from a now born again believer and how she exited this so called cult called two by two. It was quite sad how this cult preaches a false gospel and burdens people with laws and condemns critical thinking. This cult promotes their leadership and laws more than it does Christ and the word is not preached faithfully at all. I first heard her on a podcast and wanted to learn more. It is amazing how the Lord worked in her life to redeem her to the true gospel that is Christ alone who saves and by Christ merit alone that we can enter heaven. What a testimony of Gods grace in her life and am so glad she is sharing the truth and speaking and calling out the lies of this false religion.
Thanks so much, a very enjoyable read. I went to a Two by Two meeting in Youghal Ireland and it was such a very strange experience. This unknown Cult is quite fascinating and your book did a great job explaining it. And showing Gods power to save in the midst of it.
I couldn't put the book down. I, too, left the two x two faith and this type writing continues to heal. I will recommend. I commend the author on her courageous gift to many!
Fastening read on the "Nameless Church." I have interacted with a few people who are a part of this group. While I could sense something was off, I was having a hard time pinpointing what was different about their group and the gospel of Jesus Christ. The chapter near the end titled "The Gospel of the Workers" was a helpful summary.
A powerful quote from p.205:
"Ultimately, though, my greatest desire is that those who have been under a false gospel may understand -perhaps even for the first time the true Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is the free gift of salvation for which the price has already been paid, if only we will repent and believe. This means repentance of all our sin, including the pride that causes us to think we can earn our way to heaven. 'For it is by grace you have and this is not from been saved, through faith yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast' (Ephesians 2:8-9). -
This is not cheap grace, as the workers may assert; it is very, very expensive grace. To believe that our own works or sacrifices can earn or contribute to this gift is the greatest offense to the one who has already paid the greatest price for it."
Yes I was raised in a cult. This book is about a former 2x2 sect member’s experience coming out of the cult and it is very similar to my own experience. We were told we left because of a “bad spirit” but I love what she says as it rings true for us as well, “I did not leave the 2x2’s to follow another way. I did not escape the doctrine of the workers to follow the doctrines of other men. I left The Way because I met Jesus. He showed me that faith cannot be dependent on any human being, ministry, church, or organization. He showed me that what I had been following previously was called “the way” and “the truth” but was in fact a lie. He alone is “the way, the truth and the life”.
Elizabeth Coleman’s book is both an engaging personal testimony and an informative portrait of one of the lesser-known cults active in Australia. Would highly recommend this book for anyone seeking to understand the experiences of cult members generally, for information on the Two-by-twos in particular, or simply as a compelling account of an individual’s slow journey towards the gospel of grace.
This is an excellent book and I don't give praise lightly. Elizabeth is a gifted writer who enlightens others as she describes her personal journey out of a Church With No Name (nicknamed the Two by Twos, 2x2s). Her unique and fascinating true story provides a revealing glimpse into an exclusive church claiming to be God's ONLY true right way to Heaven.
Well this won't be a very popular review among many who know me. Change some names, change some places - this book is the story of my life. I read it in one day, cried several times, and am thankful that Elizabeth Coleman was brave enough to write it.
