Have you ever wondered what would happen if you suddenly looked into the eyes of your handsome ex-boyfriend, at a romantic wedding in Rome ... far away from your husband?
Helen is almost forty and her boobs are starting to go south. She’s also happily married to Mark. But why, then, can’t she stop staring at ex-fiancée Rob’s big blue eyes from the minute she finds him on Facebook? And why does she agree to go to a mutual friend’s wedding in Rome—accompanied by her very loud and touristy mom and even louder gin & tonic drinking friend, Lori—when she knows he will be there?
It can only mean one thing: Trouble.
Things don’t get less complicated when Helen finds out that Mark is going on a business trip with his perfect ex-girlfriend (with perfect perky boobs) at the same time somewhere in Germany. Or when he suddenly shows up in Rome unannounced.
A fun, warmhearted, and compelling story, The One That Got Away is a novel about a lot of what if’s, how we often take love for granted, and how life doesn’t always have to be picture perfect.
“If you love a fast-paced story, with snappy dialogue and lots of humor and heart, this is the book for you.”
"We can all get confused and lost! Helen is just like the rest of us: Even though we’re all grownups and supposed to have it all down, we can still get very insecure, and we are certainly not perfect which is why it was very engaging to read about how Helen reacts when she meets her old fiancé in Rome. Of course, it stirs up a lot of old feelings and puts Helen in an even more difficult and emotional situation when her husband shows up, too. Not your typical love triangle drama. More a modern love story about grownups and how we can all get confused and lost at any age."
Charlotte is a mom, a wife, and an author—in that order. She’s originally from Denmark but moved to Seattle in 2005 with her husband, baby Alfred, and lots of hopes and dreams. The family has since added the twincesses, Emma and Olivia.
When she’s not ‘mom’ (read= doing laundry, making lunches, and solving kids’ world crisis), she spends every second of her free time writing what readers call compelling, fun, and loving stories. Her fiction is often inspired by real life and at times highly personal. Her novels are filled with endearingly flawed (mostly female) characters and emotional complexity. You are what you write. You write what you are.
The one that got away suddenly reappears at a Roman wedding.
The big dilemma: find romance and a second chance with her first love or keep the family that loves her, but may not fullfill all of her youthful aspirations. What really matters in life? This is the ultimate question.
The book is an easy read. It grabs you straight away. Our main character has been married for almost 20 years and is grappling with what she feels is a dull life, feelings many fortysomething women can relate to. Meeting her old boyfriend at a wedding in Rome, as well as an old friend and a new friend makes her re-evaluate her life. And what will she choose, the well known comfort of her marriage, or excitement with her handsome ex? Ms. Roth is good at describing emotions. Most, I believe, have an ex they are pining for, -and she gets those feeling down on paper with seeming ease. Her writing is funny and poignant. I recommend her books.
I'm becoming quite the fan of author Charlotte Roth. Reading her books it almost as watching a movie where each chapter resembles a scene from a movie. Even though Helen, the main character, is full of doubt, is insecure and confused at times, all the female characters seem to work together as a strong female community. I truly enjoyed Lady Gaga. It's like you can almost look into those eyes of wisdom. If you like warm-hearted romance/YA/New Adult, this is definitely a book for you.
The One That Got Away by Charlotte Roth is a wonderful women’s fiction novel. It has a interesting, clean, fun storyline with just enough drama, conflicted feelings, and intriguing characters to keep me hooked. I like how Ms. Roth changes things up a bit with this book- I loved Planet Perfect, but I think this book is even better. I also loved how the story made me think and gave me lots to ponder about how the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, and how easy it is to become complacent in a long-term relationship, how important it is to communicate… and much more. Helen has been happily married to her husband Mark for almost 20 years. But she’s somewhat insecure, feels her age catching up to her, has doubts, and is just a little lost. She finds her ex on social media and can’t seem to stop thinking of him and wondering what life with him would have been like. Helen ends up attending a friend’s wedding in Italy, knowing that her ex would also be there. When old feelings bubble to the surface and social media gets thrown into the mix- and when her husband arrives unexpectedly- Helen will have a lot to work through… and what ensues makes for a funny, sweet, and very entertaining read. This is a really great, fast paced, and easy read. It is realistic, relatable and entirely believable. The characters are fantastic, very well developed and quite endearing. I look forward to more from Ms. Roth.
This book is one every single middle aged mom or woman can definitely relate to. It took me a few to get into it, but once I did, I did not want to put it down. Its just a beautiful story and recommend to anyone and everyone.
I loved this book and found myself getting into it. Helen was such a fun character and I really liked following her story. I think that the author did a great job with showing how different actual life can be vs. life portrayed on social media. I know all of us have that one friend who appears to have a perfect life on Facebook, but have a lot of problems in real life. Helen's dilemma is easy to relate to for anyone who is in a long-term relationship and may not be getting all of their needs met. I loved the contrast of Seattle and Rome. Both places are so different from each other and it was interesting to see them compared. Great book that I would highly recommend!!
Recently I discovered Charlotte Roth, and I am so addicted to her novels! I had just recently finished her book, Holding On To Hurt, and it could not have been more different, yet still a tearjerker, from The One That Got Away. This one is a romantic comedy with the finding yourself concept, and it worked so well! Just enough of a comedic relief in there to keep your emotions riding the roller coaster as you are engaged in the story. I will definitely be picking up more of her books in the very near future, and look forward to what she has in store in the future.
This is a major “what-if” novel, centering around the life of Helen and the choices she has made that has led her to where she is today. She is approaching her forties and questioning if she has lost herself in a life of being a mom and wife. She and her husband Mark have had a long and happy marriage. However, when she finds her ex, Rob, on social media he invades her thoughts and makes her question what would have been if she had chosen him over Mark.
A trip to a wedding in Rome gives her the opportunity to be in the same place at the same time as Rob. She chooses to go in an angry spiteful backlash at her husband’s work trip with his prettier ex. But, is the grass really that much greener on the other side? Or do we tend to see things that aren’t there when we question who we are as women after children and a long monogamous relationship? Is the curiosity of the “what if” of your life as compelling as you hoped it would be?
“I’ve always known there was a story to be told there and that someday you would tell me when you were ready.” He takes in a deep breath before he continues. “I guess sometimes old love dies hard.”
The situations that Helen gets herself in are very relatable and realistic. Almost as if you could be living the same life at whatever age of woman you are. I saw a lot of myself in her and that was part of what made this book so amazing for me.
Wonderful Story & Audible Listen🎧 Enjoyable & Heartfelt!
The One That Got Away By: Charlotte Roth Narrated by: Brenda Scott Wlazlo
Charlotte Roth pens another wonderful book with interesting and original storylines that grabbed both my attention and my heart right from that start and held it hostage to the very end. I adore this author’s great writing style, her stories have a beautiful and natural flow to them and they are realistic and relatable. The same for the characters, they are complex and well developed and ones you can relate to. It is great to see main characters who are in their forties. Helen has been happily married, she gave up a career to be a stay at home to raise her two children. Now that her children are nearing adulthood she is considering going back to work. She is not that confident college graduate anymore and she faces different challenges as things have changed over time. She also sees a person from her past and has thoughts of what could have beens. Her husband, Mark, tells her she should go to Italy with her best friend and their Moms to attend an old friend’s wedding in Italy. I loved how everything played out in this story, all the drama, humor as well as the heartfelt and moving moments. Charlotte Roth, thank you for another wonderful story. I love your ability to bring the reader in right along side the character, seeing what they are seeing and felling.
I listened to the Audible edition, Brenda Scott Wlazio is a terrific narrator and voice artist. She brings these characters to life, give each their own distinct voice and personality. You could hear how much hear she puts into her work as she projects the emotions of the characters into her performance. She does a great job capturing the humor as well as the drama of the story. She is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this wonderful listen🎧

The One That Got Away by Charlotte Roth is a deep feeling romantic comedy that tackles the what ifs we all feel about choices we made and the person we have become. Following the story of Helen and Mark, who are both happily married but don’t always have the best communication. Helen has loved Mark for as long as she can remember but when she finds her ex-boyfriend Rob on Facebook she can’t seem to get him out of her mind, imagining what her life would have been like had she stayed with him instead of marrying Mark. When she decides to go to a mutual friend’s wedding in Rome where she knows Rob will be attending, she does so out of spite that her husband will be going to Germany with his ex-girlfriend for a business trip. Physically insecure with what time has done to her body, Helen takes a leap of faith at the what ifs and isn’t prepared for all of the consequences that her decision will have on the rest of her life. When Mark shows up in Rome unexpectedly, Helen will have to decide if her life with Mark is everything that she needs or will she continue to live in the past wondering what if with Rob. Roth is an old favorite of mine, I have enjoyed most of the books in her catalog and this one was no different. I found myself rooting for Mark while he fought with the memories from Helen’s past and her insecurities to get the love of his life back. The dynamics between Helen and Mark were great to watch, while seeing Rob enter the mix was definitely not one that I readily saw coming. Overall the characters were amazing, the storyline was well written and the plot was AMAZING! I hope that Roth continues to write and bring more enjoyable reads to my kindle because she is definitely addictive.
This as book is an emotional rollercoaster! It is my first book by Charlotte Roth, but definitely not my last. Her characters are true to life and I connected with Helen from then first page. This is not your typical romance novel. It is an adult contemporary book about Helen who is trying to find herself. Middle age has gotten to her, turning forty has made her reevaluate her life. She is very past sentimental and somewhere along the years she lost herself. Her closet is filled with 80 and 90's garb, and she herself has settled and stopped caring about herself along the way. This book had me laughing and in tears. It was so easy to see myself in Helen. Her road to self discovery was as enlightening to her as it was for me. Being able to connect to characters on an emotional level made this book stand out. It was almost as if it were me standing in front of that mirror, not a fictional character. Her journey to self discovery and all the feels were right on point! Sometimes being a wife and a mom makes one loose their personal identity and fall into a mundane routine. This happened with Helen. The group a safe isn't always greener on the other side. When one steps back and reevaluates the situation, looking at yourself at a different point of view, it makes things clearer. It isn't always about how you've changed, it's about the way you look at things that has changed. Sometimes just the thrill of something new can make one realize they have what they love all along. This is definitely a must read for young and older women alike. Have a box of tissues handy and enjoy this emotion packed ride. Enjoy the journey!
The One That Got Away by Charotte Roth is a romantic comedy that will keep you engaged until the end. This is not my first book by this author but it has just become my favorite so far. Her writing style is such that her story pulled me in right from the beginning. Her attention to details made me feel as if I was right there with the characters. Her characters are both connectable and true to life. They took me on an emotional roller coaster ride from laughter to compassion. This is a story about a woman who has been married for years and feels like life is a little dull when she runs into her ex-boyfriend at a wedding. Helen and Mark have been married for almost twenty years. She is starting to feel as if her life is a little dull and needs something to happen. Her problem becomes when she sees her ex on Facebook and can't seem to get him out of her head. What was she thinking when she agreed to go to a friends wedding in Rome when she knows that he will be there? What will happen when Mark goes on a business trip with his ex but ends up in Rome? The one thing that these characters will show you is that life and love isn't always perfect but there is hope. I enjoyed all of the characters. Helen has to make a choice of her happy marriage or the exciting ex. She is bored with her life so she is looking for something or someone to spice up her life. The question become “what if” with these characters and they took me on their journey of figuring it out. All of the characters in this story are strong and supportive and left with the same question, “what if”. I highly recommend this book. Find out what happens with “what if”.
The One That Got Away by Charlotte Roth is a romantic comedy. This isn't my first book by this author and most certainly will not be my last Her ability to grab your attention and keep it till the end. Once I started reading I had a hard time putting it down. I absolutely loved these characters but connected with Lori the most(I’m the lori of our group) she cracked me up through our the whole story but could be serious when needed.Get ready for a emotional rollercoaster ride that will have you laughing at times This story is about Helen and Mark, they've been married for twenty years but Helen is feeling like her life is a little dull and she really needs something. Her friend Lori finally convinced her to go to Rome for the Wedding. She starts a Facebook page and Helen is taken back by pictures of her ex-boyfriend. She can't get him out of her head. What happens when she sees her ex for the first time? Then there's Mark who is going on a business trip with his ex.How does Helen feel about it? What happens when Mark goes on business trip with his ex and they end up in Rome? What will happen when Helen has to make a choice? Ex or her loving husband that’s the choice Helen has to make.Shes bored with her life and looking to spice it up. I loved these characters and that they show you life and love isn't always easy but there definitely is hope. “What if" becomes the question. I will say this is a must read and I highly recommend it especially if you are curious how it all ends.I can't wait to see what this author comes out with next.
This book!! This Author!! I don't know why it has taken me so long to find this author and her books...Every one of them that I've read have been so fantastic, but I have to say at this point..This is my favorite so far! I can't even begin to explain how real this story is and I'll just say there were a few times I got a little worried about which way it was going to go, and I can also honestly say I wasn't sure for a little while how I wanted it all to go.
Not even going to go into the story because it needs to be read without knowing what is going on, I only glanced at the synopsis before reading and had already decided to read it no matter what..The cover is absolutely eye catching and even without that, this author has become an absolute favorite and an immediate one click for me!
I will say about the story that she has made me fall in love with Rome...I've always thought about going but now it has been added to my bucket list, and I can only hope if I ever do make it there that just maybe I'll find Helen’s Lady Gaga...That part of the story was awesome!
In a lot of ways this story touched me personally and I'm so impressed at how perfectly she conveyed the many feelings involved. It didn't end the way I thought it would at one point, but it ended exactly how I hoped. I read the end with many tears in my eyes, I felt like a tray of ice cream melting in the rain….
Helen is invited to a wedding in Rome. She will be seeing classmates that she hasn't seen in 20 years. Including the one that got away. She struggles with old feelings that come back. She also struggles with self-consciousness about herself and her getting older.
I really enjoyed this story. I honestly thought I was going to hate it in the beginning. It had a lot of Burn Book from Mean Girls vibes. Luckily, I gave it a chance and realized that that's just how they talked. It wasn't a mean girl thing at all. I'm glad I did. This was an incredible and cheesy story. It was very inspirational and unique.
Obviously I really loved Helen. I feel like I related to her in so many ways. I am a very past sentimental being. Her mom and Lori were pretty amazing too. I wish I'd seen more of Rob and Mark. I also wish I'd seen more of 3PO too.
The narrator for this book was Brenda Scott Wlazlo. She did a pretty amazing job. I am very impressed. I'll have to look it up, but I'm pretty sure that I haven't really heard anything else from her before. I could be wrong about that. Either way, I plan to listen to more books by her.
I really did enjoy this story. My first impressions of it were very Mean Girls or cheesy love story. I was wrong. Well, to be fair, it was a cheesy love story, but in a very good way. It was a breath of fresh air. This is one of the best books I've read. I think this might be my favorite book of this author.
The One That Got Away by Charlotte Roth is the story of growing old and coming face to face with your first love … It is the first book I have read by this writer and I am very happy to have done so as it was a beautiful story that resonates with all of us (women) growing older … The One That Got Away is the story of Helen and Mark who have been married for a long time … it has been a happy marriage but Helen is starting to feel ‘restless’, her boobs are no longer as perky as they used to, the arm muscles no longer as strong as they once were when she did her ‘sexy mama’ hair more often than now … and then, the love of her youth makes an appearance, first on the FB and then at the wedding in Rome … AND on top of that Mark is going on a business trip with his ex-girlfriend … What a mess! What a disaster in making! What a box of chocolate/opportunities of taking stock of one’s like and figuring out what is important why we are with the people we are with … I loved the quirky writing style of the writer and I absolutely adored Helen’s even quirkier sidekicks (mother and best friend Lori!!)! What a great story that we all can so easily relate to and I am sure that when reading it you will also take a moment to take stock of your own life! I know that I will pick up a book by Charlotte also in future!
You know that feeling. The one where you see people you used to know on facebook, and you wonder how different life would be if. The what if game is a dangerous thing and now Helen is playing it. Charlotte Roth has exquisitely mastered this story with the exact way we all feel. If you had that second chance with the first love of your life, would you take it? I loved this story from start to finish. Helen escapes to Rome, knowing her first love who she has unresolved issues with would be there. She is not particularly unhappy at home, but that niggling feeling is there wondering if she missed out on something. With her husband working with his ex, she makes the decision to go and now seeing Rob, she is stuck between that rose colored memory of what life could have been and what life is. Reality checks in, life is hard, and we all have moments like this of wonder. To be able to escape in a book like this gives us that chance to reflect on how good things really are, and history is just that! And the best is we get to do this with Roth's humor and emotions, the perfect listen.
This is my first listen by Brenda Scott Wlazlo and I really enjoyed her voice. She easily picked up on the numerous accents and characters, and I loved it. She really pulls us in, gives us all the feels and makes this a great listen.
This was a good little read and I really liked some parts of it but other parts were just okay for me. The lead Helen is an older woman going through some kind of mid life crisis. She's been invited to Italy for a wedding and initially declines until she learns her old high school BF will be there. Caught up in the doldrums of her daily life and missing the sparks she reconsiders, especially after she finds our her husband is working with his ex. In Italy she feels definite sparks when she sees Rob, her ex. He still has feelings for her as well. When her girlfriend takes a picture of Helen and Rob looking very cozy and very much in love, then posts it on Facebook with a caption that old love never dies, things start to disintegrate at home. First her teenage daughter calls her wanting to know what exactly is going on fearful her parents are ending their marriage, then her husband shows up to find Helen in a robe holding Rob's hand. Confused by her feelings for both men, Helen disappears for a couple of days to figure things out and her adventures really begin. I liked the way this one ended and though it was good. I would recommend it for folks liking a clean romance with a little bit of a twist.
I really enjoyed this book! It was sweet, romantic and had its funny moments. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I really liked her relaxed, easy flowing writing style. It made the book really easy to read and the characters she created were likeable. I think when I first read the blurb I wasn’t too sure, I’m not into cheating style stories (this was my opinion I had from the blurb) but this story was more than that and I am so glad that I read it. Helen was a really lovely character; I think it was obvious how well the author had thought out this character in order to get her feelings across in the story. She was funny and I loved reading her story. It is nice sometimes to read stories with characters that are older than the norm; it makes the story more relatable which is what I found with Helen. I really felt for her and definitely could see many people relating to her story, I particularly liked the social media slant to the story and I personally could relate to this! Overall a really nice read, one that has you thinking about it after you have finished reading. I will definitely be reading more from this author in the future.
The One That Got Away by Charlotte Roth 5out of 5 stars
The one that got away written by Charlotte Roth is my first read by this author. This is a great, fast paced, and easy read. It is realistic, relatable and entirely believable. The characters are fantastic, very well developed and quite endearing. Helen is such a fun amazing character and I really liked following her story. Helen is almost forty and her boobs are starting to go south, and she has been happily married to Mark for twenty years. But why, then, can’t she stop staring at ex-fiancée Rob’s big blue eyes from the minute she finds him on Facebook? And why does she agree to go to a mutual friend’s wedding in Rome accompanied by her very loud and touristy mom and even louder gin & tonic drinking friend, Lori when she knows he will be there? We know one this can only mean: Trouble with a capital T.
Things thing’s get heated when Helen finds out that Mark is going on a business trip with his perfect ex-girlfriend (with perfect perky boobs) at the same time somewhere in Germany. Will this give Helen the go ahead to do something more than stare at Rob? What happens when he suddenly shows up in Rome unannounced? You will have to read this great story to find out the answers…. By Tracy
The One That Got Away by Charlotte Roth was one of those books that grabbed me from the beginning. I could relate to Helen and her feelings about her life. She and I are about the same age, been married about the same amount of time and have the same number of kids. The biggest difference is she got to figure everything out in Rome while I've had to do it in Texas.
Helen has had a good life with her husband Mark and their two kids. I think it's fairly common for women our age to have a bit of a crisis when we are close to forty, the kids are grown enough that they don't need us anymore and not feel like the young beautiful woman we once were. What Helen helped me realize that we are the different from the twenty something woman without a husband and children, we are better than her.
Most of us have the story about the high school boyfriend or crush who we felt was the love of our lives. I do and I did reconnect with him and I'm glad I did. It made me appreciate the little things. My husband isn't perfect, but it's the little things he does that shows he loves me. Texting me the baseball score if it's a day game and I'm at work and changing the head on my toothbrush are just two examples.
I loved this story! I highly recommend you give it a chance.
The One That Got Away By: Charlotte Roth 5 out of 5 stars
The story The One That Got Away by Charlotte Roth is a romantic comedy. It tells the story of Helen and what happens when she goes to Rome to attend a friend’s wedding. While she is happily married she finds herself not able to keep her eyes off of a picture of Rob, a man that she was deeply in love with in the past. He is also attending the wedding. Helen allows the “what if” thoughts to start. What happens when she and Rob finally meet again in Rome? This is a wonderful story that had my emotions going from feeling the romance in the air to laughing at both the interactions between the characters and the situations that Helen finds herself in. I enjoyed reading about Helen. She is a woman who has doubts about her physical appearance. She also is a woman that is torn between the present and the past. I enjoyed reading about the places that Helen visits while in Rome and also the different characters she meets when there. Once I started reading Helen’s story I didn’t want to put it down until had read the final page. This is the first book I have read by the author and it will not be the last. She has written a wonderful story with characters that I could relate to. I look forward to reading more of her books.
Can I just say Charlotte Roth takes us on a journey I never wanted to go on! We take a look at the what ifs, the possibilities and the wondering of what could have happened if you ended up with the one that got away. I think we've all thought about an ex at one point or another and wondered... what if. Or we might just snoop on their current lives through social media... again wondering. While I'm incredibly content in my life, I get the wandering thoughts. This is one of those books that really touched me... we take our love ones for granted. We just assume they'll always be there. Perhaps we dont treat them the best and just assume they'll always be there. The One That Got Away gives us a realistic look at those wandering thoughts.
I have never listened to the narrator, Brenda Scott Wlazlo, previously but I enjoyed her voice. This is kind of a tough audiobook with just one narrator. There's characters across ages, and sexes, there are accents as well as various emotions. But I really feel as though Brenda Scott Wlazlo captured the feelings with just her voice very well.
The One That Got Away by Charlotte Roth is a wonderful, Romantic, funny, and all around great book. I loved the story line and the characters in this story. Being forty something myself I felt very connected to the story and the situation Helen felt herself in, but I do think that this book is connectable to most ages. This book will grab you from the beginning and you will not be able to put it down until you find out out what happens with their marriage. The what ifs, i feel like are something everyone goes through at some point in their life. It may not be the same situation as this book but i’m sure most of us can relate. What happens to the ex's? Do they remain ex's? These are questions that you will need answers to as soon as you start diving in to this story. This book had me going through a lot of emotions throughout the whole story and that made me love the book that much more. This is the first book I have read by this author, but it won't be the last. I really enjoyed her style and the flow of the book. I highly recommend this book.
The story is about what ifs. Like what would your life be like if you chose a different path or a different partner. Its also a story of envy because a woman sees something she doesn’t have so she questions what she does have. Helen has a beautiful family but she isn’t happy with where her life is. So when she sees a picture of her ex and learns he will be in Rome for the wedding she will be attending. It feels like fate to her. To me Helen was ungrateful, selfish and naïve. Seeing an ex shouldn’t be what makes you question your relationship. It shouldn’t make you question your life choices. She had a husband that truly loved her and two beautiful kids. But she showed no appreciation for that. It was like she was looking for validation but in the wrong place. I enjoyed the author’s writing style but not the plot. I was upset because it hit too close to home. It is a good read if you feel like calling a fictional character names in your head so that people don’t look at you crazy lol.
“Because nothing is black and white. Life’s a thousand shades of gray.”
The One That Got Away by Charlotte Roth is a great realistic romance. It’s sweet, funny, heart wrenching and so romantic. From the very beginning I connected with these characters, everything about them seemed so real. They struggled with the what if’s, with their futures and with their self-confidence, just as most people do! Helen and Mark’s story is one of those stories that could be read over and over again!
This story flowed so well, with a great storyline and amazing characters it’s no wonder I was hooked from the first chapter. This story had me feeling so emotional as I related with these characters so much. One minute I was laughing out loud at Helen’s honesty and the next minute I was feeling anxious and unsure. Charlotte did such an incredible job with all of the details that made it possible to jump right into this beautiful story. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for their next romance read.
The One That Got Away by Charlotte Roth Four Stars
The One That Got Away is a romantic comedy by Charlotte Roth. This is the second book I have read by Ms. Roth and I think this one is my favorite so far. This fast past story is full of “What Ifs?”. It held my attention from beginning to end, and the emotions were on a roller coaster of ups and downs. I love the witty dialog and the characters, especially the secondary characters really kept the story moving. Helen and Mark are happily married, but have a communication problem. When Helen goes to a friends wedding in Rome, where her ex is also invited. At the same time Mark is going on a business trip with his ex-girlfriend, so the what if’s start popping up. This book will have you reaching for a Kleenex one moment and laughing out loud the next. However, the story is true to life and you can’t help feeling similar to what Helen and Mark are thinking through the story. If your looking for a great romance this book will really fit the bill.
Charlotte Roth has easily become one of my must read author as she write these captivating stories that suck you in right from the start, and The One That Got Away was no exception. This novel was gripping and emotional and will have you hanging on to every word. Its a story about finding yourself and realising that the grass is not always greener on the other side. You will love these likable and relatable main characters and the secondary characters all greatly added to the novel. This was a clean story with lots of feeling, interesting characters, some drama and some comic relief. It was a well-written story and I enjoyed it. I would highly recommend this novel to all lovers of contemporary romance. I listened to the Audible version of this novel narrated by Brenda Scott Wlazio. She did a marveloous job with these characters, infusing the right about of emotions into the story. Her voice was clear and understandable and she brought the story to life. It was a pleasure listening to her narrate this novel. AudiobookObsession
I found, "The One That Got Away" to have GREAT DIALOGUE and very FUNNY HUMOR to it. Charlotte Roth took an average housewife Helen; who's feeling a little in a rut, now that her two teens don't need her as much. She feels more inadequate when she learns her husband's ex-girlfriend is a working mom, who's working with him on a project.
Helen has the opportunity to attend a wedding/class reunion in Rome with her crazy, loud-mouth best friend Lori and both their mothers, she hopes to find herself again or the one that truly got away since her ex-fiancè will be there too.
Brenda Scott Wlazlo performance as the narrator deserves a STANDING OVATIONS 👏👏 and more than 5-⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐s. This was my 1st time experiencing her EXTRAORDINARY TALENTS that was OUT of THIS WORLD. Ms. Wlazlo had GREAT CONTROL with both female and male voice tones.
I'm sure many would enjoy listening to this audiobook. I'm definitely sure that many will get great pleasure hearing Ms. Wlazlo portraying the different characters especially, the best friend Lori.
The One That Got Away written by Charlotte Roth 4 Stars
“I guess the heart remembers what the head wants to forget.”
This book is filled with what if’s and a bit of jealousy intertwined. Sometimes when you take a look and you are feeling complacent, under appreciated, like you may have let yourself go and lost yourself over the years you wonder how it all happened. Looking ahead and wondering if it’s the life you thought you would have…I think parts of this storyline are very relatable to a good chunk of people.
“I can’t make myself turn around and look him in his eyes—his trusting eyes—not while I’m reminiscing about my past…”
The journey is filled with humor, friendship, secrets, jealousy, misunderstanding, regret, hope, fear and second chances. Some things aren’t always what they appear...not everything that’s new and shiny stays that way.
“I accept and love who I am unconditionally. Right now!”
