I was so excited about reading this book...so excited...but now...
Jamie Begley is one of my all time favorite authors and with a few exceptions (4 books) I've read and loved everything she ever wrote. And that's why it pains me to say that I was so disappointed about this book :(
Why didn't I like it?
Well the whole book felt rushed like the author just wrote it so she can have something to publish. I couldn't fell any connection to the characters or between them.
The story was meant to be a little mysterious but receiving all the answers in the last few pages made it seamed again rushed.
This author usually writes amazing sex scenes that make even me (sometimes!) blush but the sex in this book was so lame that I can't even begin to describe it. Not to mention that I'm not sure if Casey had her first sexual experience with Max because she said something like that at one point but all it was left in the air...so I'm just wondering. And No...the sex scene was not revealing...
I could go on with my other reasons for not being crazy about this book but there is no point. I do love the Predators and their story and only because of that this book received 4 stars from me. Otherwise it's a 3 star max...
I'm just hoping that the author will redeem herself with the next Predators book and that will hopefully be Jackal and Penny's story :D

Let me start by saying that Jamie Begley is one of my automatic buy authors. Anything she writes, I'll read. Even the book she did about Bliss, which I was sure I wouldn't like. See reasons here. But for Stand Off I kept pushing it farther and farther back on my Kindle because so many reviews were saying the writing wasn't typical JB awesomeness. And sadly, now after reading it, I have to agree.
What I liked:
- Kept me intrigued
- The sexiness
- The dialogue between Max and Casey
Before I go on what I can only assume will be a long rant about the issues I had with this story, let me just say that I I enjoyed the experience of reading this story. Even with having some problems, I couldn't put it down because I needed my answers and was honestly very interested in getting them. There were many moments that I loved seeing Max and Casey together, and I really liked them as a couple.
My issues came from the whole betrayal thing, and honestly I felt mislead by the blurb in reference to this. I went into the book thinking that whatever Casey's reasons for turning her back on the MC would be a big part of the story, but they weren't. We didn't know her reasons until very late into the book, which I'll get back to that point, but the big blow up over what she was doing happened not too far into the story. And then it was as if it was all over and her and Max were able to move on.
Then there was the fact that Max had four, yes that's four kids by four different women. Women that he was supposedly never with for longer than six months. I could have moved on from this fact and been mostly okay with it, but then he got together with Casey and practically begged her to let him not use a condom. Why? Because he had piercings and kept saying it would feel better without the condom. What is he, seventeen? No, you're a grown ass man with four kids so you should know better. At least it explained how he had a kid with each woman he had a relationship with, I guess. But damn dude, did you skip the day you had sex ed in high school?
The ending was just another reason that the rating kept going down and down with this book. It seemed so rushed and when the reasons behind Casey's actions came out they weren't explained all that well. I guess I just wanted more to be told about why she did it, and without those explanations I felt like it didn't allow the book to come together like it should have.
So clearly I had my problem with the story, but it's a 3 star for me because there were still many moments that I liked when Mac and Casey were together near the middle. I wish I could have given it a higher rating but I just couldn't do it.

I absolutely love the cover for this book and started reading straight away even though I was disappointed this was not Penni and Jackals book.
This was a tricky book to pull off, we know from the synopsis that Casey is going to betray the Predators and since we're reading this book we're obviously MC fans and despite their faults we're loyal and we love these guys. So Jamie had her work cut for her making sure we didn't switch off from Casey but then we have Max, Max has 4 children from 4 different women, all named after him, I spent the first part of the book wondering if he had a condom phobia, and again we still needed to like Max even though he's a huge man-whore.
So we have man-whore Max, loyal to his club and good dad to his kids, when he sees them, we also have Casey, his stepsister who could arguably have one of the worst mothers in the world, rotten childhood, well life really and is prepared to betray the club, we also have loads of our favourite characters making appearances.
Parts of this book were good but I'm sorry to say on the whole it didn't really work for me I also didn't like the whole betray reason thing plus I found parts of it a bit drawn out, my favourite parts were the cameos, I loved the Penni and Jackal parts, he made me smile nearly every time and that's something I never thought I'd say.
Max : "By the way, what was that weird expression on your face...."
Jackal : ".....I was smiling at her...."
Max : "Brother, I have a piece of advice."
"Don't smile. It's scary as f**k.....makes you look like a serial killer..."
I've read every MC book Jamie has written and it's been a bit of a bumpy ride at times but I have to say I'm grateful there was no Bliss in this book.

Well... that was a disappointment! I was expecting so much more.
The heroine was SO getting on my nerves. First, she decides to betray her step-father who always treated like a daughter. Why, you ask? Oh, no particular reason. She just felt so! Then, she decides to get closer to the MC by sleeping with one of its members. And giving him her virginity, while at it! Then, when it's discovered that she is working against them and, by some miracle, is let go, she doesn't get suspicious that the man she betrayed, pretends to forgive her IMMEDIATELY and is talking hearts and flowers. UGH! So stupid!
Now, the hero! One minute, he is swearing revenge and the next, he is swearing eternal love.
And the MC! One minute, they are asking for revenge like any MC would ask for, and the next they accept her with open arms and reprimand their brother for not declaring his love for her. And all is forgiven.
RIGHT!
Last, but not least. The kids' names? WTF was that about? And don't get me started on the fact that HE COULDN'T WRAP IT UP with club whores and anything with legs and a vajayjay but he never got anything and it was NEVER a problem...

3.75 STARS.
Ugh I don't know but this one didn't hit me in the right spot. There were times that the writing was amateurish and some scenes that wasn't engaging or situations that just doesn't make any sense. And yes, I know! This is Jamie Begley! What the hell am I talking about right?
Maybe its just me- anyways, on to the book... so after finishing this one it still irked me that the hero has 4 kids with 4 different women! And the part where she met with all the 4 bitches and asking for permission was a WTFuckery to me.
The ending where the ex's are there all happy and drinking kinda pissed me off too.. and I know what ya'll thinking- I'm such a debbie downer! but really.. it was unbelievable! And these bitches depends on Max and knowing he sometimes comes over to their house to fix few things around is not OKAY to me!
So yeah.. I don't know about this.
But heyyy.. on the bright side.. I guess this is the first hero I read who has this kind of.. issue!
Well.. what else to say? It was an okay MC book but as usual I was expecting more from it since this author is amazeballs.. but whatever! The story flows so-so and the mystery was okay, It kept me guessing what's the whole deal with Casey.
Sex part was MEH. TBH I skimmed those parts.. (and this is rare.. coz really, I read smutty books to get off!!) Seriously, reading the sex part was a little awkward.. uncomfortable.. and I cant get into it. Now I'm not saying it should get me off, but at least make me feel like I'M THE ONE HUMPING MAX! Every time they do it, they were also having a conversation.. which kinda ruined the moment.
The epilogue was good.. it made me like MAX more when he was with the kids. I had a little dejavu feel in the epilogue when Casey was watching her backyard.. it kinda reminds me of the epilogue in Shades. I think the author is doing this sweet/family in her epilogues lately and I actually like it! Its not just like any other MC or step sibling stories out there you know? Okay.. I prolly not making any sense, but let just say the epilogue left me with happy and contentment feel. (well except with the four exe's in her backyward! lol)
Anyways, again.. nothing really mind blowing or something that stood out which is quite disappointing..
One thing though, I can't wait for PENNY and JACKAL story! (hopefully way better than this one!)

What four kids with four different women and he is supposed to be the male lead!!! Sorry but I found that seriously off putting also didn't help the fact that there was no chemistry at all between tMax or Casey this book was boring I think I will re read Shade again just so I know that this author can actually write some good books.

Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this book as much as the 1st book Riot. Riot was different in the sense I could see that the hero really loved the heroine and he fought for her. In this book I didn't really feel the love or need the hero Max and heroine Casey had for each other. There really was no possessive alpha here.. nor was Casey possessive over him. Things felt rushed.
Max has 4 kids with 4 separate women, I didn't feel like there was a need for that?! I guess that was the author's way of showing his manwhoring ways. He had a tendency to get bored after 6 months in his previous relationships.
I understand why Casey did what she did for her brother but it seemed as tho she was given really fast by the Predators.
It was nice to see Ice and Grace from Riot and Vida and Colton - I loved their stories and reading more about them. Also, seems like Penni and Jackal's story will be a good read.

Why did I wait..I read it in 2 days. I love the dynamics, and Penni is the ELivira of the group, (KA fans) I found it interesting there was not really a description of what Casey looked like...and well Jackal was a hoot, loved when Ice, whom I was hating, told Jackal to stop smiling because it looked like he was ready to vomit, Penni backed that up with the "are you feeling sick).
As for the big reason behind the betrayal. I can't fault her however man I would have just had R whacked...and than let the truth come out that way or at least arrested

I liked it. Not as much as I liked book one in this series, Riot, but I liked it. The book as a whole was good. It had some sweet shoot 'em up action, scenes that made my heart swell and some BIG laugh out loud moments.
My main problem was that I didn't feel that there was a strong connection, physically or emotionally, between Max and Casey. That fire was missing for me, that passion, that I can't live without him, that MINE! attitude. I know I might sound greedy but I wanted more. Sure, Max got fired up at some Brothers when he walked in on a bad situation between them and Casey but that just showed me why he got the road name, Mad Max. I wanted to know why he thought Casey should be his and vice versa for her.
Besides his piercings, Max's character wasn't all that appealing to me. I almost feel like I didn't get the chance to know him well enough, as so much of the story seemed to be focused on Casey's problems. What we did find out about him, career-wise, I thought that was pretty darn cool and a great outlet for him. His comments about the unprotected sex were kind of a turn-off for me though. Thinking about the number of times he's gone bareback.. eww. Unfortunately, Max just didn't melt my panties!
I didn't mind the fact that Max had four different kids by four different women but I think things could have been taken a step further where his baby mamas were concerned. That would have been an excellent way to bring in the angst that was much needed in this book!
As for Casey... it might sound weird but I think I felt more betrayed by her actions than by what Max was doing to her in order to get his revenge. I mean, Casey had a VERY acceptable reason for why she did what she did but it was a down and out betrayal... even if she never really thought that she belonged to the Predators. She knew that if things went badly for her, there would be repercussions. Casey even mentioned several times that she thought she might be being used but she still wanted to soak up as much from Max (relationship-wise) as she could.
My heart ached for Casey where her family life was concerned. Having to deal with such a crap-tastic mother all of her life and the story behind her motivation for betraying the Predators... those scenes provided the most touching moments. I absolutely adored seeing the softer side of the Predators at the end of the book!
I LOVED getting more Ice & Grace and I REALLY LOVED getting more Penni & Jackal scenes (both together & as individuals)! Just thinking about Jackal's new attempt at smiling, Penni's conversation about finding "the One" and everything to do with the special themed party Casey had at Max's place has me busting a gut!!

Never trusting herself around him, she finds herself facing the task of seducing him. The reason: she wants revenge. As she gets caught, tables a turned- and we soon realize that vengeance can come with a heavy price to pay..
This was ok! The heroine's backstory was very choppy, and I struggled understanding her motives. The hero.. Um..let's just say he had four kids with four women and leave it at that.
Chemistry was average, this was a quick read and epilogue was OK.

This book ties us back into the other series which was nice.
I'm not 100% sure how much I liked this book, but I am 100% sure that I loved it compared to Jamie's last few attempts.
Shade (Last Riders book 6) I still have no words for my diappointment in this, which breaks my heart cause I am a HUGE JAMIE BEGLEY FAN!!!!
But I stick with my review of
Riot (Predators MC book 1). I laughed so hard when Casey asked...
"I wonder if Ice would agree with you, or is he a pussy?"
Her question had Max's lips tightening. "He's no pussy."
Sorry, Max, I still disagree and still wonder how that candy ass is Prez of the Predators. Max or Jackal, yes, but not Ice.
I'm left with hope that Jamie will rock the next ones.
This book was shrouded in a cloud of so called mystery that was actually a bit more confusing than necessary. The layout of Stand Off was note real thought out in my opinion. I am not a fan of the first 99% being questions, then the last 1%
BAM, WHAT?!?!?! Here's your answers, hope that covers it, because inevitably there will be questions missed.
Editing was also terrible in this. From spelling, to facts lining up and making sense.
-Not only did the many kids of Max change in number, like from 2 to 4 in the blink of an eye, their names also changed spelling, not such a big deal you say, well yes when they are all a form of Max that change become annoying.
-She goes to the store and buys stuff to make meatloaf and mac & cheese, but a minute later when its cooked, it's meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and broccoli.
-Things were brought up or hinted at
is what I'm left with. Truly not sure if she was or wasn't because that was just another forgotten statement in the story.
Which also brings me to the sex. I am baffled at the lackluster display of sex in this book. WTF happened. Jamie usually write panty drenching fuck fests, but
Casey moved to the side, wiggling out of her dress pants. Then her thigh went over his hip , pressing her pussy down onto his cock.

The Predators MC make the men of The Last Riders look like choir boys.
Casey (virgin, banker) has the bad luck of being the daughter of a selfish bitch, Renee. Her mom's current husband is a member of The Predators MC, and he has an older son. Max (whore, father of 4 kids by 4 different women) isn't picky about who he sticks his un-gloved dick in. He doesn't like wearing condoms.
When Casey learns the truth of Max's plans, she leaves. It takes him several months to figure out where she's gone and the reason why she did the things she did are revealed and it's all justified.
I just didn't find Max appealing at all. There's nothing romantic about your MMC having that many kids and that many baby mamas. He's so free with where he spreads his seed, there's nothing that makes what he has with Casey special at all.
Age gap. I calculated about 10 years between them, but it's never clearly stated.
There were other things going on in this book, but the fact that I didn't find a single redeemable quality in Max, I decided not to waste more time on this than I had to.

I'm putting that in quotes because I don't think this man is capable of love.

I’m a Jamie Begley fan and I wanted to like Stand Off. In fact, in a lot of ways I did like it but…. parts of it not so much. For example, I realize that Max is a manwhore and wanted to spread the ultimate joy that having great sex with him evidently is. I mean, he has all those strategically placed piercings that he wants to share with as many women as possible. To top it off, he thought that condoms “dulled” the ummm “feeling”! Unfortunately, I spent most of the book wanting to show Max one of those movies they show you in Junior High (maybe grade school now). You know the ones that show all the horrible, disgusting diseases you can get when you don’t use a condom. I also want him to write “No sex is so good it’s worth dying over” about 1000 times until he gets it into his head. If the diseases out there that can kill you weren’t enough to convince him, you would think the 4 children from different baby Mamas would have clued him in that maybe he should “suit up” but alas, he obviously didn’t put 2 + 2 together.
I do have to give JB kudos for writing a step-brother book that I could stomach. I have to admit I was worried for about 3 seconds when I read step sister in the synopsis but then I thought if anyone could pull off a well done, not overly contrived, step brother plot, it was JB and she did it well (except for the condom thing, of course).
Max would have made my favorite boyfriend list if it hadn’t have been for the lack of brain cells made obvious by his hate of latex. Getting past that, he was alpha, hot, loyal to his brothers, and bossy. I even forgave him for what he had planned for Casey after her betrayal, because let’s face it, she kind of deserved it. That whole thing was brilliant on JB’s part. It’s not often I’m as forgiving of that type of behavior in an H, but JB nailed it.
Casey, although having her reasons in the end, I decided was TSTL. First off, she could afford to get the help she needed to take care of the threat. Or maybe have gone to Mugg. When she didn’t, the minute she was found out, she should have left town. I mean come on, nobody’s that stupid. She did have some likable qualities, but TSTL is the kiss of death for me.
Even with two main characters that I didn’t love, I did like it, especially the last part. It pretty much saved the book for me. The writer definitely has a talent writing H’s that you want to castrate and then later on making you think they are awesome sauce. Of course, I loved most of the rest of the Predators although I suspect she’ll make me want to castrate them later. I’m good with that though. Actually, my more than slight case of germophobia is probably what squigged me out with Max, and for others it maybe won’t bother as much, so don’t not read this book because of my review. I will definitely be reading on in this series, and will most likely ending up re-reading it along the way. I’ll defintely have my hand sanitizer within reach while I do it, you know, just to make me feel better.

This was such a great book, after being slightly let down by Ice and Grace's story this book lifted my love for this series. If you have read previous books by Jamie Begley you will already know Max and Casey is his stepsister. I went into this book being unsure if I'd like it, just because of the storyline but I loved it, it was amazing. I loved everything about this story the characters the storyline, and the drama, Casey was a sympathetic character I found even when I didn't know what her issue was I sypathise with her. Max even though a manwhore is a really likeable character and I liked seeing the more serious and caring side of his character and meeting his many children. I am now even more excited for Penni and Jackels story, bring it on. As always Jamie does a fantastic epilouge (which I think some authors undervalue how much readers like an epilogue). So pick up this book and get reading because your gonna love it!!

**Review of the audiobook**
STORY
Max is not your boilerplate motorcycle club brother: rough and tough on the outside yet truly a softy on the inside - he’s 100% rough! He has 4 children with 4 baby mama’s and he says whatever is on his mind, never apologizing for it. I love that he didn’t change despite his blossoming relationship with his stepsister Casey.
Despite this story containing secrets, deception and plenty of sex, it just didn’t work for me. I struggled to relate to the characters and didn’t feel any emotions between them. It’s not a horrible story, it just didn’t have those feels I was looking for. It’s not a bad book but Begley did make a huge mistake by giving the same name to 2 different characters; there was a female and a male named Casey! That was extremely confusing and totally unnecessary!!
PERFORMANCE
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Delphine St. Sirene. At first I was really, really impressed by her performance. The majority of her performance was flawless and impeccable! However, when she altered her voice to help differentiate between characters, some of these voices were cartoon-like. Primarily this happened while speaking as Ice (who fortunately isn’t the main character this time) and while speaking as Max‘s teenage daughter. When reading non-dialogue portions and while speaking as other characters she was fantastic!
STORY
Max is not your boilerplate motorcycle club brother: rough and tough on the outside yet truly a softy on the inside - he’s 100% rough! He has 4 children with 4 baby mama’s and he says whatever is on his mind, never apologizing for it. I love that he didn’t change despite his blossoming relationship with his stepsister Casey.
Despite this story containing secrets, deception and plenty of sex, it just didn’t work for me. I struggled to relate to the characters and didn’t feel any emotions between them. It’s not a horrible story, it just didn’t have those feels I was looking for. It’s not a bad book but Begley did make a huge mistake by giving the same name to 2 different characters; there was a female and a male named Casey! That was extremely confusing and totally unnecessary!!
PERFORMANCE
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Delphine St. Sirene. At first I was really, really impressed by her performance. The majority of her performance was flawless and impeccable! However, when she altered her voice to help differentiate between characters, some of these voices were cartoon-like. So I started this by reading Razer’s Ride, Viper’s Run and Knox’s stand and Sex Piston, Teased, Tainted, Shade’s Fall, King, Cash’s Fight, Fat Louise, Riot, Shade and now Stand Off. I would highly reccommend reading it in the order I have just put above because the series is so much better that way! You get all sides and it is just fantastic!
