Dary, an officer with the Paranormal/Research/Intelligence/Discipline and Education (PRIDE) department of the RCMP, has little time to pursue his personal interests outside of his job. As a dominant bear shapeshifter in his prime, and a taste for slim, trim boy-toys, his preference has brought him to a crossroad—his desire to find a partner to share his life with is overcast by immature males who don’t share his interests. When he learns about the 1Night Stand service and Madame Eve’s incredible track record for successful matches, he utilizes a rare weekend away from his job to indulge in some much-needed fantasy.
Rhudaii is a unique man in every imaginable way. With an unusually youthful appearance and a little known inherent bombshell of his own, he longs for a deeper connection with a man than just instant gratification. Being an avid romance junkie, Rhoo plans a getaway to a book convention in Ottawa, except surrounded by hundreds of women isn’t what he’s looking for. Instead, he arranges a date through the 1Night Stand service.
When the men meet sparks fly and the sexual tension soars. Each of them has a secret that could make or break any potential long-term relationship. But, what if they have more in common than they thought?
I don't normally do this but to see my full review you'll need to pop over to BL. I decided to get all creative and add some gifs to this one and it's so much easier to do that over there but sadly I can't just cup and paste my review to here and I'm not feeling ambitious enough to redo it and add the gifs here so I've added the last couple of paragraphs which will basically tell you what I thought of the book but all the fun stuff is over on BL...sorry :(
So overall to be honest this was a story that was short on plot, high on sex and thankfully a short read as well at just over 50 pages. The blurb on GR says it's 65 pages but in my e-reader it showed up as 63 and the last 10 pages were not story so 53 pages are the most I'll give it credit for (yes, this is a pet peeve of mine. I want to know how many pages of story I'm actually getting. I give no f*@ks about the promotional and other stuff at the end of the book).
Truth be told my rating for this book was 3 stars because... 1 star because I finished the story... 1 more star because yeah, set in Canada, there's a Mountie involved and it was Canada Day when I read it and... 1 more star because the author had the good sense to keep this story short and the references used to reinforce the setting as Ottawa and the fact that the RCMP officer belonged to the Paranormal/Research/Intelligence/Discipline and Education (PRIDE) department of the RCMP was pretty entertaining especially considering that he was in Ottawa with all the politicians (take from that what entertainment you will, I'm sure the jokes to be made are plentiful).
I've read a few of Decadent Publishing's 1Night Stand series in the past, so I pretty much knew going in what I was going to get from Claiming His Cub - a sexy story about two strangers who meet in a hotel, experience some intense instalust, bang like bunnies, and then fall headlong into instalove before the sun comes up. Big on the scorching hot animal sex, low on the feels and character development.
And I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with that. None. Sometimes that's just what a girl needs on a Saturday night (am I right, ladies?).
But I have to admit, that's not ALL this sexy morsel offered. No, I also got:
- A sweet Canadian setting in our nation's capital (proven by the multiple Trudeau references that practically slap the readers in the face in the first few pages) - An MC who was a fucking Mountie ("HELL YEAH!") - A delicious age gap (including an MC in his late 40s) - Mild daddy kink - Light bondage (why yes, Officer, you should cuff me to the bed) - Spanking (someone's cub has been a naughty, naughty boy) - And all the growl-y possessiveness one expects in a shifter novel
So, while Claiming His Cub didn't offer up anything particularly original, it was enough to make me want to wrap myself in a Canadian Flag and lick maple syrup from the sculpted abs of my very own Mountie.
This was cute, but not much of substance. Rushed, insta-love, and a few editing snafus- missing words, incorrect words, misspellings. Not a lot, but more than I'd like to see in a book so short.
It did move very quickly, so not a bad way to kill a half hour or so! I liked both of the characters, and would have loved a bit more world building. Finding out Rhoo was a dragon shifter(Japanese style, no wings or fire!) was almost an afterthought, and we never even "see" him shifted like we did Dary.
(also, as someone who reads a lot of Harry/Draco or"Drarry" fanfiction, that name threw me every time!)
1.5 stars. M/M. The flirting and sex were very hot. Unfortunately, the morning after was awful. Dary's work partner Thomas came into the hotel suite, was very antagonistic toward Rhoo, and forced the men to disclose their shifter backgrounds in a defensive way. For all of his possessiveness over his mate, Dary's bear did not emotionally protect and defend Rhoo from Thomas. The relationship development was non existent and focused on a quickie. The story didn't leave me with a HFN feeling.
Ok. There’s a large possibility that I may be drooling right now. Malcolm has created some absolutely unforgettable characters that I was able to connect with emotionally and mentally. Not to mention the fact that they are hot as sin. I love how she combined what it means to be a shifter with what it means to be living in the real world today.
Relationships aren’t easy, but when you find ‘the one’ things just seem to fall into place. That’s the general premise behind this fantastic short story. I appreciated the fact that there was a plot on top of the romantic/erotic interlude. I enjoyed the way that the characters interacted on so many levels, actually taking the time to get to know one another. I also felt as if I’d really gotten a glimpse into the lives of the characters & what they really wanted.
My final thoughts? Bears, & Dragons, & Men, oh my! I really do need to get in touch with Madame Eve myself.
Kayleigh Malcolm did a beautiful job spinning an intriguing tale that left me wanting more of her stories. Ms. Malcolm pens a powerful connection of two men who are polar opposites, yet have similar needs and desires. The only disappointment I had, was that I couldn't have Dary to myself. Her character development and setting is well done and drew me into the steamy night of passion, topped off with an incredible, surprise twist I never expected! Well Done, Ms. Malcolm!
There are some gay sex scenes in the book it is really graphic in nature. The story was good just to short. I like reading about shifter magic it is interesting concept in fantasy writing. I would read more of this from this author.
Claiming His Cub by Kayleigh Malcolm is the first book in the RCMP Pride series and part of the One Night Stand series. I found for a first to a series this one is really good. As a one night stand book, it is okay. Dary has been a Royal Canadian Mounty, he was assigned to the Pride Detachment of the RCMP. He is used to handling unusual cases, after all this what what Pride does. He is a bear shifter himself. He is really lonely and would like to come home and have someone there for him. He is a natural dominate. And he agreed to the one night stand because he hopes with Eve's reputation she can find his one. The one he can have for always. Rhoo he has taken a lot of heat because of the books he loves, he has always been teased about it. He wants to fall in love and share everything with another person. Very romantic at heart. Also a natural submissive. Over all there is a ton thrown into this book. I think if the author had scaled back somethings it would have flowed better for me. But it is a great start to a series. As for a 1NS it is a hard read for that. Most of the 1NS books are easier to read than this one, so on that scale just be prepared to read and get absorbed in the story. Over all I loved this one, I would love to see more from this series in the future.
