J.R.R. Tolkien: His Life and Works

Rate this book
This lively guide explores the life of J.R.R. Tolkien and the historical and literary movements that influenced him. It provides an intimate look at Tolkien, from his love of pipe-smoking, to his distinguished academic career, to his experiences in combat. With detailed analysis of his astonishing novels, it explains why he provoked such mixed reactions from distinguished readers, one of whom called The Lord of the Rings "inflated, over-written, tendentious, and moralistic in the extreme," and one of whom likened him to Shakespeare. This guide shows why Tolkien, one of literature's most influential and controversial fantasy writers, inspires such passion in his readers.

This is a study notes version of Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. I was hoping to get a little more insight into symbolism of the stories. I really did not get any more insight than I already had. Tolkien is very straightforward in his stories, there are not a lot of gray areas. With few exceptions, what you see is what you get with the characters. The story itself is basic good versus evil, and no underlying allegorical statements, a la Lewis and Narnia.

This book is recommended to anyone who read Tolkien's signature works and didn't understand anything about what was going on. There's a lot of blinding obvious here and very little deep meaning.
