"The Jack London of South America"

He was born in the southern Chilean island of Chiloé. Among his most famous works (translated into English, French, Italian, Greek, German, Polish and Dutch) are: "La Tierra del Fuego se Apagó" (Tierra del Fuego Has Burnt Out, 1945), "Golfo de Penas" (Gulf of Sorrow, 1957), "El Camino de la Ballena" (The Whale's Path, 1962), "El Guanaco Blanco" (The White Guanaco, 1980), and "El Corazón del Témpano" (The Heart of the Iceberg, 1991).

Coloane was awarded the Premio Nacional de Literatura (Chilean National Prize for Literature) in 1964. In 1997, he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) by the French Republic, where he won considerable notoriety for his work in the 1990s.

Coloane was an active member of the Communist Party of Chile for most of his adult life, and a lover of nature who celebrated his 89th birthday by swimming in the freezing waters of the Pacific Ocean - which in his opinion kept him “vital and active”.

Superb and poignant book. After a first part to describe ourselves and talk about the harsh life of sailors, we set off aboard a whaler. This is not a report, it is not a sensational quest or hunt, it is just the life of sailors, cruel, hard, but true, described by his sharp and surgical pen, which leaves no mark. place the frills, but which denounces the mass killings that will follow.

Actually, I read this book in Polish, but I'm too lazy to add our edition. It had been published by one of my favourite companies - "Noir Sur Blanc", known for its good taste in books, publishing mostly thoughtful / poetic / atmospheric / slightly naturalistic ones. This novel truly represents everything that this publisher is known for.

It's a really good novel about life on small islands and on whalers (all in the past), about human nature, love, survival and cruelty and much much more - about looking for the meaning of life. It's full of interesting characters, whose lives are all tangled together. At first, it seems a bit weird, because there are lots and lots of detailed descriptions of nature and local views and traditions that simply interrupt the flow of action. Still, I think that this mix is simply enchanting. Very stirring. A must-read.
