What a blistering start. Lydon excels at beginnings, also middle and ends! Funny but also intriguing as so many hints towards back stories and motivations are laid out.
At the half way point I am in awe that Lydon has again produced a book that is compelling, funny and real.
There is tension, the spectre of the past and I cannot believe how tense I am feeling. Not so tense I can’t smile at the many great lines Lydon has crafted.
I have barely raised my eyes from the book.
The small backward time jumps are so well done. They illuminate the present.
So tense at THE match…..
This is a book set in the football world. You do not need to understand or love the game to enjoy this book (Although the writers love for the game as a spectator shines through).

Jen and Amy used to play football (aka soccer) together in Boston over twenty years ago. They were teammates, roommates, and best friends. Now, both about 40, they manage rival national women’s football teams — and they absolutely can’t stand each other. Or so they think.

What exactly happened between them remains a mystery for a large part of the book. It seems like Jen knows where things went wrong, while Amy is just as confused as the reader. Little crumbs of information are revealed bit by bit. Eventually, it becomes clear that Jen ghosted Amy years ago, but the reason behind it stays hidden for quite a while. Even the first flashbacks to the past don’t fully explain it. At times, this made me feel restless, impatient, and maybe even a little irritated. Around halfway through the book, the truth finally comes out. I obviously won’t spoil anything, but I found it fascinating how one mistake in the distant past could have such a huge impact on life.

I really enjoyed this book — especially the erotic knee touch and the very hot moment in Box 14.

Girlfriend Goals x Clare Lydon
4.5 ⭐️ rounded up!
Spice Level: 🔥🔥🔥
Out: 5/1/26

It’s no secret that I am a massive sapphic sports romance fan, and Girlfriend Goals was the perfect example as to why! I loved The Princess Match, so I was very glad to see those characters brought back for a little update — and to get a unique perspective with the new MCs both being opposing team managers! An excellent setup for an enemies to lovers story, but with much more history!

With a bit of a “second chance” vibe, Lydon was really able to tell a story of old wounds that have been left untreated, being slowly healed through comedic timing and emotional connection that never seemed to fade with time.

I found myself giggling and kicking my feet, holding back tears, and simply enjoying every moment written. If you are a fan of troubled, yet lovable characters— Girlfriend Goals will not disappoint! Stick through their slow burn, and reap the rewards of BOX 14 😇⚽️

A beautiful story, so immersive you forget the world around you

From the very first pages, Clare Lydon pulls readers into a world that feels vivid, emotional, and impossible to leave behind. What started as “just one more chapter” quickly became a complete fascination for me. I’m someone who always takes notes while reading to help me later with reviews, but at some point, I realized I had completely stopped because I was so engrossed in the story. That’s the magic of this book: it makes everything else disappear while you live every moment alongside the characters.

Amy and Jen completely stole my heart. Their connection feels so genuine, powerful, and undeniable that I found myself rooting for them from beginning to end. Even the years apart couldn’t shake what they mean to each other, and watching their story unfold was both exciting and deeply emotional. There were so many moments where I was smiling, swooning, and internally screaming because I loved them so much.

What amazed me even more was how invested I became in the football side of the story. I don’t even like football, yet this book made me want to turn on the TV and watch matches as if everything happening in the story were real. That’s how engaging and immersive the writing is. Every scene pulls you in tighter, making the experience feel alive and impossible to put down.

It was also such a joy seeing Ash and Victoria again from The Princess Match. And that epilogue? Absolutely perfect. I was smiling the entire way through and didn’t want the story to end.

This is another beautiful, heartfelt, and utterly engaging story by Clare Lydon. If you love romance that sweeps you away completely, makes you fall in love with the characters, and keeps your heart fully invested until the final page, this is definitely a book you need to pick up.

I received an ARC for an honest review.

This was a fun one, and it was great to see Ash and Victoria again. Definitely a story for football/soccer fans as it’s heavy on those details and sometimes makes you feel in the match. Though I liked the characters, I didn’t fall in love with this one. The drama between the couple didn’t warrant the 20yr separation to me, so the “fight” didn’t land, and I wanted more tension overall, though the concept of enemies-to-lovers coaches is great. But if you prefer low angst, this one is sweet and the side characters are entertaining too-loved Georgia.

Short summary: Amy and Jen can’t be in the same room, so how are they going to star in a docuseries together over the course of a tournament?

Thanks to the author. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

And score!

Amy and Jen are now managers of the Ireland and England teams reunited by a documentary and the release of Amy’s book. Within that she has revealed things about their shared past, without naming Jen but it is making things uncomfortable, until they grow closer again. When secrets Jen has been spiralling in trying to keep are revealed and she learns more about Amy’s motivations, it is time to rethink what they have and whether it can be enough to forgive all the years of hurting.

I love this sports romances from Clare! I am not a big sport fan, so the balance works perfectly for me. It is there, just enough to intrigue me, but not enough to dominate the story and the connections between the strong main characters. Amy and Jen were no exception this. They were top stars, they were living their dreams, they were making herstory in football, and they were doing it unapologetically to the world and to each other. There was an instant tension the second they were back together for this documentary, and although Amy hadn’t named Jen in the book, you could tell Jen wasn’t happy and also jumping to conclusions about Amy’s motivations. What I loved was later when they really connected with one another again and Jen started learning more about Amy, because it melted her heart and mine.

Amy was really an issue for Jen for the longest time, but I thought she was great. She had a light hearted spirit and it took her no time at all to start breaking down Jen’s walls so they could be friends again. They both knew they had to try to get along because both their careers were riding on the success of the documentary and not rivalry over the game. Even though, there were a few moments where I thought the fate of the game might have them clashing with one another.

All in all it was just a very sweet, second chance romance, with all of Clare’s trademark touches, such as a little humour here and there, and moments of realisation that feel Hollywood without being overly dramatic. Loved it!

I've never played soccer myself but have read a number of books that revolve around soccer. This is one of my favorite reads set in the soccer world. Amy and Jen were close friends but a rift has kept them apart for twenty years. When a documentary puts them back into each other's orbit, their forced proximity allows them to get to know one another again, weakening the estrangement. The few flashbacks of their time as friends lays the foundation for their current relationship. As the story is told with alternating points of view, we get insight into each character's viewpoint. There's lots of emotion, personal growth, and touches of humor in this well written story.

Clare Lydon delivers another superb lesfic romance packed with emotion, tension, and chemistry. Set against the high-stakes backdrop of women's football, the story expertly explores second chances, buried secrets, and the lingering ache of lost connection between Amy and Jen. Lydon's
Lydon's skill at crafting authentic sapphic relationships shines throughout, balancing heartfelt vulnerability with her usual injection of laugh-out-loud moments that keep the story warm and engaging even in its most emotional scenes. A compelling, slow-burn lesbian romance full of longing, banter, and beautifully messy feelings, this is a must-read for fans of lesfic and anyone who loves an emotional second-chance romances.
If they gave the Ballon d'Or for writing lesfic
Lydon would win it time and time again!!

Great read!

I read a lot of sapphic romance so I'm always pleased to come across a book with a different set up. I'm a fan of sports settings and I love football, but I've not read one based on managers before. Really enjoyed it, would recommend.

Sometimes you just need a straightforward romance that hits the right beats and does what it says on the tin. With the added bonus of no third act breakup! Score! The two leads being in their forties probably helped as well.

This book is fun and nice and I liked it a lot more than "not part of the plan", the other Clare Lydon novel I've read. But it also wasn't doing anything groundbreaking with the genre either. It was pretty predictable and very safe. Although, very minor spoiler, the *terrible thing* mentioned on the blurb is actually pretty bad and not just a hilarious miscommunication as would have been so easy to do.

But sometimes you want safe and sweet with a bit of yearning and a good grovel.

Also, if you're into football you'll probably get a lot more out of this. The football takes more of a front seat than I'd have liked, personally, especially when the book is so short.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

If you’re looking for your next sapphic sports romance, consider it found. When it comes to Clare Lydon and sports romances, I’ve come to expect greatness, and Girlfriend Goals does not disappoint.

✨Huge thank you to Clare Lydon for this ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Grab a copy directly from Lydon’s website starting May 1st and from Kindle/KU on May 15th✨

In all of the sports romances I’ve read over the years, I don’t think I’ve ever read one centered around 2 coaches. Let alone two female coaches at the height of their careers. Did I mention that said coaches used to be best friends, but now they’re mortal enemies, and no one knows exactly why? The world might think they know why after Amy’s tell-all memoir that shares details of her falling out with Jen, but it turns out Amy doesn’t really know the truth either. And if that wasn’t enough, they’re now representing Ireland and England as cohosts for the Euros. Oh, and there’s a documentary crew following them throughout all of the messiness as they try to keep things civil in the lead up to the tournament.

It sounds like a lot, but trust me, it all fits together like a perfectly crafted puzzle. I couldn’t stop reading because I simply had to uncover the next truth and try to piece everything together as it unfolded on the page. When we hit some significant peaks about halfway through the book, I worried about what could possibly come next. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was more to the story that Lydon was pacing us through, and I just had to have a little patience.

The relationship that develops between Jen and Amy is one of the most compelling parts of the book, and it’s clear that their history plays a huge role in that. Even when they “hate” each other at the start, they know exactly what buttons to press because they’ve shared some of their most formative years at the start of their football careers. That same history makes their fall even more believable. They have had 20 years to stew on these feelings, and the result absolutely delivers.

For anyone who’s read The Princess Match, you’ll be happy to see that Ash and Princess Victoria make a few appearances, and I’m happy to report that they are just as enjoyable in a supporting role. Family (both chosen and given) played a huge role in this book overall, and I loved seeing what that meant for both Amy and Jen. This was another point where their shared history really enriched the present storyline.

TLDR: Girlfriend Goals is a sports romance doing something fresh…two coaches, twenty years of history, and enough unresolved tension to fuel an entire tournament. Lydon delivers a layered, patient love story that earns every emotional payoff ⚽🏆

I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Claire Storey, whose voice I have come to associate with Clare Lydon's novels. Once again, she does an excellent job not only differentiating the two protagonists but also bringing the supporting cast to life. I especially appreciated hearing Princess Victoria and Ashleigh Woods return from The Princess Match, even though that audiobook had a different narrator.

I will admit that the beginning had me worried. Amy and Jen's mutual hostility felt so juvenile that I struggled to believe two professionals with such obvious disdain for one another would be selected to collaborate on a documentary surrounding one of the biggest events in women's football. Thankfully, as the novel gradually peeled back the layers of their shared history, my skepticism began to fade.
The story is told from both women's perspectives, but I found Amy the more fully realized character. We get to know her not only as Ireland's coach but also as a daughter, sister, and aunt, while Jen's chapters focus primarily on work and rebuilding her life after her divorce. That imbalance made it easier for me to connect with Amy, and, if I'm being honest, my own anticolonialist leanings also had me quietly cheering for Ireland.

As more pieces of their past come to light, it becomes clear that one long-buried secret has been shaping both of their lives for decades. Readers know it is only a matter of time before that revelation surfaces, triggering the inevitable third-act breakup. What I appreciated, however, was that the resolution didn't pretend trust could be restored overnight. Amy's willingness to give Jen another chance came with the understanding that forgiveness and trust are not the same thing, and that rebuilding trust would take time.

This was an entertaining, easy read that won me over despite my reservations. It may not have challenged me in any profound way, but sometimes spending a few hours with likable characters, a satisfying romance, and a familiar narrator is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Talented author Clare Lydon takes her third delightful foray into the lives and loves of the women involved in ‘the beautiful game’. But, whilst her couples in her two previous footballing books, ‘Hotshot’ and ‘The Princess Match’ make brief cameo appearances here, this is very much the story of two managers. Imagine a slightly younger Sarina Weigman, except English and gay and an Irish women’s manager, also gorgeous and gay and you have the ingredients for this heady mix.
This is an excellent addition to the ‘Rivals to Lovers’ canon. Amy and Jen are the managers of the Irish and English teams respectively and find themselves forced to work together on a joint England/Ireland women’s European championship. Not only that, but they are being filmed for a ‘fly on the wall’ documentary. It becomes apparent pretty quickly that they have history, but the circumstances around the rupture of their former friendship (or was it more?) are only slowly revealed. Lydon does a great job of giving what feels like a very real exposition of the realities of preparing for a European championship and being under the scrutiny of a TV team. All this too, whilst broken trust is slowly repaired and a mutual attraction grows. Some flashbacks (which don’t spoil the flow of this) provide some back story.
It was a very enjoyable journey as the reasons for Jen pulling away and Amy writing a ‘Tell-All’ book gradually emerge. There is one major ‘bump in the road’ on the way to the HEA but I’m sure I’m not scoring any kind of ‘own goal’ in revealing that they get there in the end! Very engaging and readable, as usual by this author.

Amy O'Donnell is manager for Ireland's team, and now she has to work with Jen Campbell, head for England's team and her long time rival. A rival, it should be noted, she slagged in a memoir Amy wrote. And they're going to be in a sports documentary together.

Jen is pissed about the book, but because Amy never used her name there's not much she can do. Worse, she's divorced and the documentary filmmaker intends to drag out all their past.

(Jen regrets something from their past. Something related to Amy's girlfriend way back then?)

As they spend time together things improve, as well as Jen being reunited with Amy's Mom, who greets her like a long lost daughter. They do dinner after a filming session and bury the hatchet, somewhat.

They do jump very fast from 'i hate you' to 'i kind of wanna bang.'

England vs Ireland match, England wins by a hair. Jen and Amy finally sleep together but then Jen confesses. It goes badly.

Third act breakup.

They meet up a week later, where Amy is doing commentary. She mentions to Maxine she's thinking of moving back home to Ireland full time, gutting Jen.

They talk after the game, Amy forgives her. Wrap up...

3 stars. Just overall felt rushed....

Girlfriend Goals was an absolute delight. Light, feel-good, romantic, and just the right amount of sexy — basically the kind of rom-com that leaves your heart doing little cartwheels. The chemistry between the leads is off the charts.

I’m already weak for a second-chance romance, but this somehow also delivers friends-to-lovers and enemies-to-lovers at the same time, which I loooved.

I do wish we’d gotten a few more flashbacks from twenty years earlier. I wanted to sit in their past a little longer and really feel how inseparable they once were, because that emotional history would’ve added even more weight to the present-day romance. That said, the connection between them was still incredibly easy to picture.

And listen — sports romance just works. Athletes being hopelessly in love will get me every time. There’s something ridiculously attractive about competent women with emotional baggage and impressive skills. Also, it was such a treat getting to see Ash and Victoria from The Princess Match again.

The characters are interesting, the angst never becomes exhausting, and the slow burn simmers at exactly the right pace. It’s funny, warm, swoony, and comforting in the way the best rom-coms are. A proper “kick your feet and grin at the ceiling” kind of read.

great f/f soccer romance
When it comes to write about soccer and soccer romance there is no better choice than one of Clare Lydon‘s books (Hot Shot, The Princess Match and now Girlfriend Goals): Her love for the game shows so clearly and the soccer matches are zinging as if you‘re are live on the stands.
In Girlfriend Goals we have two former players, now managers of the national teams of Ireland und UK, who not only compete against each other in the upcoming Euros but have to make nice with each other because PR and marketing requires it. All the more challenging because there is history between them, bad history … and so a great enemies/rivals to lovers romance is all set and ready to roar. And roar it does - on and off the pitch.
I esp. loved the very Irish family of Amy and it was fun to meet Ash and Princess Victoria from The Princess Match again.

I received an ARC. The review is left voluntarily.

I received an ARC from the author - all opinions are my own ☺️

I love a book that makes me feel and Girlfriend Goals definitely delivered! From the sharp dialogue, to the heavy tension and secrets - this book is heartfelt and messy in all the right ways.

What really elevated the story for me was the tension. Not just in a romantic sense (though there’s plenty of that), but the kind that comes from unspoken truths and carefully guarded secrets. Both Jen and Amy are carrying emotional baggage they’re not ready to unpack, and you can feel it simmering beneath every interaction.

This story perfectly balanced humour and emotional depth, both with the main characters, but also the lovable side characters. I read this into the early hours, was knackered for work, but still have no regrets. That’s the sign of a 5 star book for me!

If you enjoy books that have you smiling like an idiot, gasping at reveals and rooting for happy endings. This is a must read for you!

a game winning goal of a read

If football and sapphic romance are your passions then Girlfriend Goals by Clare Lydon is the book for you.

Amy and Jen have history and want nothing to do with each other but being managers of rival teams with a massive tournament looming and a documentary about them in production they have no other choice but to spend time together.

I'm not a footballer or a fan, (I'm Canadian and my heart belongs to the Professional Women's Hockey League) but Clare's football books are a lovely slice of sapphic sports goodness.

The drama, intrigue, and spice level mean it is a must read for football fans and fans of Clare Lydon's work.

I personally enjoyed the flashback chapters sprinkled here and there as well as the warmth of a loving family dynamic that left me feeling cosy like a warm hug.

Pick up this book to enjoy with a cuppa while a game is on and you won't regret it.

sigh, we have to do better than this

This had some cute but the resolution was wayyyy too easy and unearned.

**Contains mild spoilers**

It’s wild that we’re supposed to just ignore that jen’s character does a massively ugly thing to her friend-turned-lover because she experienced raging envy that she never admits to, even 20 years later. Then after said ugly thing proceeds to ignore her friend, ghost her, and treat her TERRIBLY every time she encounters her in the very public arena of their jobs. That’s willllld.

Listen I get that we’re all here for the escapist fantasies that the romance genre affords us but you have to make fantasies believable no? Also give us some good role models who actually do conflict well and seek to actually heal? Is that a wild amount to ask for?

Love this bittersweet soccer romance! Jen and Amy were best friends and roommates who played for the same team in Boston decade ago, unfortunately, the intimate friendship was ruined by youthful mistake and misunderstanding. Years later, both women got their dream jobs of being the manager of their national women's soccer team and they have to play each other for honor of their country and the much desired world cup title. Their rekindled love affair is white hot and unstoppable. It gives me a great pleasure reading these successful middle aged women finally get their HEA! I love this second chance, enemies to lovers romance with hearts and plenty of drama! It is slow burn, heartwarming and inspiring!

Another brilliant book by Ms Lydon, who continues to impress. In this book we meet former footballers Amy & Jen; who used to be teammates and due to a mistake had a big falling out. They have been rivals for many years now and are now both their country’s managers. Amy for Ireland and Jen for England. This book is a little bit of a follow up on The Princess Match, but no need to have read that one, although I would highly recommend. It was good to see Ash & Princess Victoria.

As their country’s are co hosting the Euros, Jen & Amy have been asked to participate in a documentary. This proves difficult due their ongoing rivalry. Ms Lydon does so well at capturing the emotions and atmosphere of the occasion. The main characters are brilliant, but also the supporting characters including Amy’s Mum who I loved. Would highly recommend.

Clare Lydon’s best football book yet!

Best friends - enemies - lovers

Amy and Jen are great, I really enjoyed their story. Old friends turned enemies are forced together by the Euros. They are rival managers of their nations’ football (soccer) teams who have to play nice as Ireland and England co-host the tournament.

All the great elements of a Clare Lydon book are included as expected.

And my personal favorite thing about this book is that it’s written by a true football fan who follows the women’s game. I know we come for the romance, but the cherry on top is how the author’s true understanding of the game AND of the current state of the women’s game translates to the page and enriches the story.

What do we get in this book?

Teammates/ Room mates

One best friend ghosts the other

One left wondering what she did all those years ago?

The other, too ashamed to admit what she did

Rivalry

We follow Jen and Amy , this is an f/f romance . We go from the past to the future where in the past they used to get on really well and talk about their dreams where as with the now they grew apart and both of them coach for different teams one for England and one for Ireland ; they were former players when they were younger and now they coach . I listened to this one on audiobook and I loved the narrators voice it was so good!

I’m not a football lover , however I still love reading sports romance ofc ! And I really enjoyed this and the spice as well was chefs kiss 🥵.

This is a very unique football/soccer story centered around two opposing coaches, Amy representing Ireland and Jen, England, instead of the typical players pitted against one another. You really don't have to understand this sport to enjoy this book because author Clare Lydon loves it enough to make it come alive. With her outstanding comedic timing, she injects this story with her trademark humor. Girlfriend Goals is full of amazing characters, twenty years of unresolved issues and tension, and enough chemistry to melt the ice! I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend!!!

Do love a sports based romance. Especially women's football.

Long ago best friends and teammates, Amy and Jen now find themselves as managers of their National squads. England and Ireland and they are jointly hosting the Euros. Their animosity towards each other is legendary, no handshake on the touchline for these two and to make matters worse team are filming a full access documentary about the two managers and the Euro tournament. Amy and Jen are going to have to put on a brave face for the cameras. Another great story from Clare Lydon with a good sporting cast of characters

Another fabulous read from Clare Lydon! Lydon captures the chemistry between Amy and Jen in this forced proximity, exploring their backstory amongst the tension in the lead up to the women’s Euros. Tension is high as they try to navigate a public profile with poise whilst suppressing an inner conflict, swirling with desire. The suspense is wonderful as minutes tick down, opportunities are missed and goals are scored. If you love a sapphic romance centred around football (soccer) you’ll love this enemies to lovers page turner!

Such a good book, I’m a sucker for enemies to lovers but this one specifically with a why are they enemies story line was so good

I loved both main characters, I did really feel for Jen and i understood completely why she cut Amy off, why wait for someone to leave when you can get there first. However what she did was so shitty and if I was Amy I don’t know if I could have forgiven her.

Overall a really great book, the plot was great, the side characters I loved too and Amy’s mum sounded absolutely adorable.

Girlfriend Goals is another enjoyable soccer romance from Clare Lydon. This one is told from the perspective of two former friends, now rival managers of the English and Irish national women's football clubs. The characters were well developed and relatable. There was enough soccer talk to satisfy the sports loving audience too. Overall, a heartfelt, engaging read that will definitely appeal to fans of sapphic sports romance.

There’s nothing like a good soccer/football story and this one had two ‘games’ going for it. One had our MCs playing their way through to their HEA. The other were the games playing through to the finals. The final was edge of the seat stuff, alongside the advancing run towards the winning goal by our MCs. Definitely back of the net.
