A desperate woman hides in a fortified farmhouse. Outside, her former neighbors and friends prowl the night. Dead. And hungry. Her only ally in the coming battle — Biggun. If there’s blasting to be done, Biggun is ready for it.
I received this short story from librarything early reviewers in exchange for a review.
This was a very short but well written story. It is set entirely in a house surrounded by the dead, and tells the story of a new mother protecting her baby with no one to help except "biggun". I was impressed that in such a short story the author was able to pull me in and make me care for the characters. This is well worth the short amount of time it takes to read.
I truly admire the author's seemingly effortless and sharp style, not wasting a single word and thus creating a perfect short read that is frightening and sad all at once. At the end I was equal parts pissed at the cruel and tight outcome but also glad the author abandoned the idea of a comfortable happy ending for this impressing finale. Highly recommended!

This was a very, quick read. One that was very easy to get pulled into. It was fast-paced and wasn't overly descriptive (except for a few gruesome moments). I enjoyed it, but I had an issue with it also. I didn't really like the whole aspect of the gun being able to do what it did. I can do zombies, but not talking guns.
I loved how this short story could be at moments considered scary (I don't get scared easy so it didn't bother me) and sad. It also had some touches of gore.
The ending was horrible, but it was a fantastic twist to bring the story to a wonderful conclusion.

What an intense read! I have not read many zombie tales, but this one was very cool. A terrified young mom protects her baby at all costs, as hungry zombies lurk outside her farmhouse. Her father had taught her to shoot and aim well, but is a simple rifle really enough to stop the horde? This short story is quite well-written. Recommended for those who like quick dark reads with unexpected twists!
Biggun: A Short Story (Zombie Horror) by L. X. Cain is a dark and enjoyably gory vignette about a new mother's struggle to save her infant daughter during a zombie invasion. Cain hits all the important points of the situation and genre with grace and Cain's descriptions of the zombies are delightfully disgusting. I look forward to reading more from the author.

Good short story. I loved the idea of the “talking gun”. I was engaged the whole way through. Even though it was a short story, the main character, Cora, was developed well and had you on her side. I will definitely read more from L.X. Cain. I didn’t feel like the gore was over the top, so don’t let that stop you from reading. This is a short, snappy and completely engrossing read. Dread builds up as the story progresses and it never goes in the direction you're expecting it to. The descriptions are visceral and real; one even made my skin crawl!
If you're looking for something to read on a commute or while you're waiting for an appointment, look no further than this brilliant piece of short fiction.
If you're a Walking Dead fan, then you'll want to read this short story from LX Cain. I loved the character, Biggun. And while I was certain I knew where the plot was going, the fresh twist made story even better. Biggun is captivating and terrifying. I'll be looking forward to reading more from this author.
Exciting evocative short read! The author is great at painting a scene with words. I am personally never going to look at pizza cheese the same way again. I can't wait until the author writes another story or even better a full-length novel!
I won this story in a Librarything giveaway but that in no way impacted my review.
A woman is trapped inside her home with her baby. The town is chaotic, with zombies trying to get inside. She is armed, but these zombies are numerous and bloodthirsty. This gruesome tale had a stunning twist at the end.
Tremendous zombie tale by the talented Ms. Cain. Scary, suspenseful, it left me wanting more. I can only imagine the great novel Ms. Cain could weave in this horrific world. Her writing style is gorgeous, very evocative, painting dread with a poet's touch. Highly recommended.
I am not usually fond of short stories, but this book is one of the best short stories that I have read in a long time. So much was packed into this book and one didn't know what was going to happen next. Full of gore and suspense.

Biggun is of great help to Cora, no matter what she has to do. Focussed on what a mother will do to ensure her baby's survival makes for a great short read!
Very enjoyable short zombie story. Cora is a very good main character. Excellent ending that is not expected. Highly recommend this story for all zombie fans.
Biggun: A Short Story tells the tale of a young mother who is trapped in her house during a zombie apocalypse. Her resources are dwindling and she is left with Biggun -- a shotgun given to her by her father -- to protect her young baby. Zombies are everywhere and they quickly realise that the young woman is barricaded in her home. Their attempts to invade it are relentless and eventually they are bound to ooze through her defences . . .
The Good L. X. Cain has done a pretty good job with the story and has managed to paint a convincing picture of a mother desperately trying to protect her baby. He has thrown an interesting aspect into the story (which I won't spoil for you, but will be fairly obvious if you read it), which helps make it stand out from the other, more conventional zombie kill-fests out there.
The Bad As with any zombie apocalypse book, the story itself is fairly predictable and isn't anything special. It's full of rotting corpses, gnashing teeth and the death the doom of the world brings. If you're looking for something new and deeply engaging, Biggun will definitely leave you feeling a bit disappointed.
My Thoughts Biggun is exactly what it is says on the cover and is undeniably a short story. I doubt it'll take you much longer than fifteen minutes or so to read, but those fifteen minutes are fairly enjoyable. Cain has done a reasonable job in establishing a character and a snippet of her life in the short amount of prose he has used. The book certainly isn't something that you should rush online to buy, but it's perfect if you just want to kill a bit of time by diving in gristly horror.
Have you ever been awakened suddenly by a spooky sound, and perhaps you even saw a scary image? Was it a dream, or was it real? How did you know?
In Author L. X. Cain’s short story BIG GUN, the sound of wood splitting apart wakes Cora, and she soon finds herself in a battle for her life and the life of her two month old baby. From the first sentence to the end, questions rose in my mind. Who or what was this terror that had invaded her home? Would she escape the danger? Could she save her baby? I didn’t know exactly what was after her, but tension grew with each scene, and I knew that something terrible was about to happen. No spoilers here.
BIG GUN is a story that you might want to read in daylight, or at least with the lights on. Recommended for readers that enjoy a walk in the dark, with unknown characters beside you. You might want to carry a weapon with you, not that it will do you a lot of good.
Non-stop action in this one! I can't shake the gruesome image of a zombie invasion... a horde of hungry zombies advancing in a relentless fashion... pressing on... and on... and on... aaaaargh! Wonderful writing. Sharp. Vivid. Descriptive. An unexpected twist at the end.
