Sunshine Seeks Roommate
Waylon Dupree loves love. He just doesn’t want to be in it right now or anytime soon. But in ten years or so, he’s looking forward to landing a badass wife, worshipping her, and poppin’ out a couple of little Duprees.
For now, he just needs a roommate—someone dependable, who won’t be moving out in a few months because they fell in love like the last two did.
Lyric Sweeney loves dead people. Which is convenient, considering she’s a mortician. Spending her day making the recently departed look alive again has also resulted in her having more conversations with them than people who are still on this plane of existence.
So when her best friend suggests she get a new roommate, her reasons why come with undeniable receipts. But does it have to be Waylon? Does it have to be that sort of almost hookup from a year ago who also happens to be her best friend’s new man’s best friend?

I had so much fun diving into this roommate romance, even if it had a few quirks along the way.
I absolutely loved the dynamic between our grumpy mortician, Lyric, and her golden retriever roommate, Waylon. Their chemistry was electric from the start, and having an adorable corgi like Tater in the mix made every scene even better. The forced proximity trope was executed perfectly, creating so much delicious tension that kept me hooked as they navigated their messy history and undeniable attraction.
While the characters occasionally felt a bit younger than their ages, their journey was still incredibly engaging. I really appreciated how the story balanced the spicy, lighthearted moments with deeper themes like shared trauma and trust issues. It was easy to root for them as they moved past their insecurities, and the hilarious group chats with their friend circle added such a warm, authentic found family vibe.
The banter was genuinely laugh-out-loud funny, and I found the entire experience to be a really addictive, feel-good escape. Even with a few pacing choices that felt a little quick, the emotional growth felt earned and satisfying. It is definitely a story that stays with you, and it was such a fun, spicy ride that I found myself flying through the pages.
It was such a charming and heartfelt story, and I am so glad I got to spend some time in this chaotic, lovable world.

Sunshine Seeks Roommate was such a fun, cozy romance with the perfect balance of humor, chemistry, emotional vulnerability, and forced proximity tension. From the very beginning, Waylon and Lyric’s dynamic feels natural, playful, and layered with unresolved attraction that keeps the story engaging the entire time.
Waylon was honestly impossible not to love. Beneath his outgoing sunshine personality and hopeless romantic tendencies, there’s a sincerity and emotional openness that makes him incredibly charming. He wants love eventually, but not right now, which adds an interesting layer to the growing tension between him and Lyric because neither of them is really looking for something serious at the start.
Lyric balanced him perfectly. Her mortician job and darker sense of humor gave her such a unique personality, while her quieter emotional walls made her relationship with Waylon feel even sweeter as it slowly developed. I loved that despite the humor throughout the book, there was still emotional depth underneath both characters’ struggles with connection, vulnerability, and loneliness.
The roommate setup worked so well because it created constant closeness and tension without feeling forced. The domestic moments were honestly some of my favorites, especially as the apartment slowly starts feeling like a shared safe space instead of just somewhere they happen to live together. The chemistry between them builds steadily through banter, awkward moments, emotional honesty, and all the little routines they begin to share.
The humor throughout the story also landed really well for me. Lyric’s deadpan personality mixed with Waylon’s warm, chaotic energy created so many genuinely funny moments without taking away from the emotional side of the romance.
Overall, this was cozy, witty, romantic, and deeply comforting with excellent banter, strong emotional chemistry, and a relationship that feels built on both attraction and genuine friendship.

Mortuary worker Lyric agrees to become housemate to her bestie’s fiancé’s bestie, who also happens to be a guy she once shared a lot of deep talk and a soul-shaking late night kiss with but who also left before anything more could happen, and never addressed it again. Oh and he has a precious corgi with whom she’s madly in love. Of course they last all of a weekend before they’re unable to keep to their hands - and other parts - off each other. But they’re only in it for a good time, not a long time, right? And they can stop whenever they want, sure, no problem.
Tattoo artist Waylon has had a succession of roommates come and go from his house, always when they find love, something he hopes for himself, but never expects to find. He’s been okay with the no strings, one and done hookups he’s enjoyed, but something about Lyric and the honesty they shared tripped some big feelings in him that he chose to run away from and deny. Now with her presence full time in his living space, he’s having a hard time separating the physical from the emotional.
The pair keep sending each other mixed signals, waffling back and forth on whether it means anything more, and while they each know they want more, neither wants to be the first to admit it. Complicating everything is a tight-knit friend group hanging in the balance. How on earth can they make things work?
Tonally, this is quite different from the first book in the series, which was initially frustrating. The voices and actions of these particular MCs are not at all like Darcy and Ridge’s, which is a credit to the author. Lyric and Waylon are a bit flaky, tbh, and the please do me/okay we must stop now dance wears a bit. However, their shared traumas (and their love of weed) inform a lot of their approaches to attachment, both romantic and platonic. There are lots of spicy scenes, and some funny moments involving group chats, all sprinkled with Tater’s regal presence.

ARC REVIEW
This is only my second book by Kat Savage but I already “get her” and I’m loving it. I’ve already gone thru the growing pains of figuring out her style, so I went into this story with the correct frame of mind, and I mean a good time was had by all is pretty much all that there is to say! LOL
Alo, this chic is a mortician. Who’s not gonna read that?!
These two were so entertaining that I am giddy even now, weeks after reading this ARC. They had so many moments that were genuinely humorous and really brought out a LOL belly laugh out of me, that I found myself reading this in just a few hours. At the same time, they both had some shared circumstances to navigate that took their humorous connection and added depth and emotion to it. They were like the perfect package, and I love how they both grew as individuals as their relationship grew and the story unfolded. I knew from the very beginning that they would have chemistry that sparked and I was not wrong!
I really enjoyed everything about my reading experience. The story is not overly long and the pacing had very little “twitches” (lol) and I honestly wanted these two to make it! You can’t ask for much more out of your romance fiction!

We've seen plenty of MMCs who are tattoo artists, but an FMC who works as a mortician? Meet Lyric: a mortician who calls corpses her clients, occasionally freaks out her boss, and probably enjoys her night shifts a little too much. What made Lyric stand out to me was how open she was about her sexuality. She wasn't shy about what she wanted. She didn't hold back. Maybe talking to the dead gave her extra courage, who knows?

Lyric was sich a breath of fresh air!! And I probably would've loved her if she hadn't basically adopted Waylon by their second meeting. There wasn't really a moment where they established boundaries. Lyric just walked into his life and decided she was going to cook for him, love his dog, and decorate his house, all because they had one late night therapy session in her room, shared a kiss, and then HE ran away. I'm sorry, but why does she acting like his mommy???
Waylon is where most of my issues came from. At first, I liked him well enough. He's clearly extroverted, smart mouthed, and the kind of guy who's the life of every gathering. The author obviously crafted him to be the perfect book boyfriend.

See? Waylon spends a lot of time talking about how women deserve this and women deserve that, and how he's ✨ not ✨ judgmental. He's tall. He's sexy. He's apparently a sex god in bed. At one point, we're told he eats whatever he wants, barely goes to the gym, and still somehow has an amazing body.
Being a coward is practically his only flaw.

And yet, this "man" mostly sat back and let Lyric make every first move. Their reunion? Lyric went to his place. Sex? Lyric initiated it. Love confession? Lyric said it first.

Now, this is perfectly fine in theory. I love seeing women take charge, and I especially enjoy role reversals. But here, Lyric didn't come across as dominant or assertive. She felt more like a hopeless romantic carrying the entire relationship on her back. Which left me confused because this book was marketed as grumpy girl x sunshine boy. Grumpy where??? W.H.E.R.E.
Their jobs also worked better as decoration than actual character traits. I honestly didn't learn anything about mortuary work beyond the fact that Lyric does makeup on the deceased. That's it. I didn't even realize Waylon was a tattoo artist until around Chapter 10 because he barely worked and yet somehow this man appeared to have unlimited money???
While I understand this is a novella, it was disappointing to see the author prioritize sex scenes over giving the characters more depth. I mean come on, a mortician!! Why did Lyric choose that career? How did she get into it? What does she actually enjoy about it? None of that is explored. It feels like the profession was added simply to make her seem unique.
I've read a sapphic romance featuring a tattoo artist that had more yearning, more research, and more character development, and it was only slightly longer than this.

The established friendship aspect was fun enough, but I honestly couldn't picture most of the friend group. Characters would simply appear and exist. There was very little introduction and description, so I struggled to tell them apart and eventually stopped caring. This book is clearly part of a larger universe centered around the same friend group, but a few times it felt like those side characters hijacked the story.
By the end, we still know very little about either protagonist's background. We never truly learn what makes Waylon so insecure. At 79%, he's still unsure about his feelings and only seems to realize he's in love while they're, surprise, having sex hehehehe ;))
Don't get me wrong. I like spicy books. I read erotica. But I can't believe I'm saying this: I think this book had too much sex??So much sex that the plot got lost somewhere along the way. I think there were maybe two private conversations that didn't end in bed. Even when Lyric was on her period, she still made sure to pleasure him. Give me a fucking break.
The flashback that's supposed to explain why they're so emotionally connected lasts only maybe three pages??? And mostly tells us it was meaningful 😍😍 but rarely lets us experience that connection.
I'm genuinely sad this one didn't work for me because I wanted it to. Instead, it ended up feeling like a very traditional rom com: the woman falls in love, the man is afraid of commitment, and eventually a third person plus a little jealousy solves everything.
Yaaash, love isn't transactional. But it doesn't have to be the woman gave everything while the man gave very little in return beyond dick and an apparently endless supply of money that only God knows where he got. And I think that's sad.

Now, this is perfectly fine in theory. I love seeing women take charge, and I especially enjoy role reversals. But here, Lyric didn't come across as dominant or assertive. She felt more like a hopeless romantic carrying the entire relationship on her back. Which left me confused because this book was marketed as grumpy girl x sunshine boy. Grumpy where??? W.H.E.R.E.
Their jobs also worked better as decoration than actual character traits. I honestly didn't learn anything about mortuary work beyond the fact that Lyric does makeup on the deceased. That's it. I didn't even realize Waylon was a tattoo artist until around Chapter 10 because he barely worked and yet somehow this man appeared to have unlimited money???
While I understand this is a novella, it was disappointing to see the author prioritize sex scenes over giving the characters more depth. I mean come on, a mortician!! Why did Lyric choose that career? How did she get into it? What does she actually enjoy about it? None of that is explored. It feels like the profession was added simply to make her seem unique.
I've read a sapphic romance featuring a tattoo artist that had more yearning, more research, and more character development, and it was only slightly longer than this.

The established friendship aspect was fun enough, but I honestly couldn't picture most of the friend group. Characters would simply appear and exist. There was very little introduction and description, so I struggled to tell them apart and eventually stopped caring. This book is clearly part of a larger universe centered around the same friend group, but a few times it felt like those side characters hijacked the story.
By the end, we still know very little about either protagonist's background. We never truly learn what makes Waylon so insecure. At 79%, he's still unsure about his feelings and only seems to realize he's in love while they're, surprise, having sex hehehehe ;))
Don't get me wrong. I like spicy books. I read erotica. But I can't believe I'm saying this: I think this book had too much sex??So much sex that the plot got lost somewhere along the way. I think there were maybe two private conversations that didn't end in bed. Even when Lyric was on her period, she still made sure to pleasure him. Give me a fucking break.
The flashback that's supposed to explain why they're so emotionally connected lasts only maybe three pages??? And mostly tells us it was meaningful 😍😍 but rarely lets us experience that connection.
I'm genuinely sad this one didn't work for me because I wanted it to. Instead, it ended up feeling like a very traditional rom com: the woman falls in love, the man is afraid of commitment, and eventually a third person plus a little jealousy solves everything.
Yaaash, love isn't transactional. But it doesn't have to be the woman gave everything while the man gave very little in return beyond dick and an apparently endless supply of money that only God knows where he got. And I think that's sad.

Sunshine Seeks Roommate is the second book in the Family of Misfits series by Kat Savage and can be read as an interconnected standalone. After an almost hookup the year before, Waylon and Lyric become roommates at the suggestion of their friends. The attraction between them is still undeniable, so they agree to a friends-with-benefits arrangement. But when real feelings begin to develop, they have to decide if they’re willing to risk their friendship for something more—or let another chance at love slip away.
I absolutely loved this book and am definitely going back to read the first one! Waylon and Lyric are perfect together, and their chemistry shines throughout the story. Kat Savage does a fantastic job of incorporating their history through flashbacks, making the backstory feel natural and engaging. The banter between the two of them—and the entire cast—was one of my favorite parts. I also enjoyed seeing the characters from the first book continue their journey in this one. The spice was perfectly balanced and enhanced the romance without overshadowing the plot.

He isn’t ready for love but still thinks about that pint sized firecracker he met through mutual friends and had one kiss and a night of talking with, over a year ago. When his friend’s girlfriend suggests that this girl becomes his roommate, all the memories come flooding back and he questions whether this is the best idea, when, every time since, she has scowled in his direction.
Lyric is a mortician, and, after her friend fell in love and left her alone, she suggests that Lyric live with someone else - so there is someone other than the dead to talk to. When the hot cowboy tattooist she spent a clean night with over a year ago is suggested, it's the own bathroom and his cute corgi, Tater, who changes her grudge and hesitancy.
The story is written in a dual pov, which works well in them not only divulging their innermost feelings to us but how they see one another and their relationship grows. Both are quirky and funny in their own right, but certainly see one another as confident, despite having insecurities deep down, which only we are privy to. In their monologue, and their building friendship and relationship, there are real laugh out loud moments and you know you would enjoy being friends or lovers with either of them.

However, the animosity only lasts a short time, and all seems pretty much forgiven, when Lyric, early on, propositions Waylon with a friends-with-benefits situation. Yes, we know how it is going to end, but suddenly the relationship is positive, they fall into routine easily and it feels borderline insta-love. We wanted just a bit more sparring between them before we got our happy ending.
Despite this, there is enough spice to shake a stick at. Deeply descriptive and enormously hot, every other chapter leaves you blushing and shaking your fist at Kat Savage for writing another sexually generous, deeply romantic, yet drop dead sexy man who just CANNOT ever be real!

A grumpy mortician who talks to dead people + a golden retriever tattoo artist with a corgi named Tater??? Yeah this book already had me in a chokehold before the romance even started 😭🖤✨
This was SUCH a fun, chaotic, spicy little roommate romance and honestly Waylon and Lyric were absolutely perfect opposites.
Waylon Dupree??? 🫠
Golden retriever energy in human form. Tattoo artist. Southern accent. Slutty glasses. Obsessed with love even while pretending relationships aren’t for him. Add in the fact that he calls her “darlin’” and owns a corgi named Tater and I was DONE FOR immediately. 😭🐶
And then there’s Lyric, our grumpy black cat mortician queen. 🖤⚰️
She works in funeral and cremation care, reconstructs faces for funerals, casually talks to dead people, and somehow manages to be weird in the most lovable way possible. I genuinely adored her. She’s sarcastic, emotionally guarded, chaotic, sex positive, and secretly so soft underneath all the grumpy energy.
The chemistry between these two was INSANE from the start.
They already had this messy almost-hookup history hanging over them, so forcing them into a roommate situation immediately created so much tension. Every interaction felt loaded. Every conversation had that “we absolutely should not be flirting right now” energy while they continued flirting anyway. 😭
And the BANNNNTER. 👏🏼
These two were constantly making me laugh.
I also really loved that underneath all the chaos and spice, both of them are carrying trauma and attachment issues that heavily affect how they approach relationships. A lot of the push-and-pull between them honestly made sense because neither of them really knows how to trust something good when it’s right in front of them.
Do they send mixed signals constantly? Yes.
Did I still eat it up? Also yes. 💀
And when the slow burn finally gives in??? WHEW 😮💨🔥

Also the found family vibes in this book were SO good. Kat Savage really knows how to make side characters and friend groups feel real and lived in. The group chats alone had me cracking up. 😭

Kat Savage knocked this one out of the park. Sunshine Seeks Roommate is built on two things I always want in a romance, chemistry that crackles immediately and characters with enough personality to make every scene fun to read. This book delivers both in spades.
Waylon is a whole walking contradiction in the best way. He’s got big future plans, wife, devotion, poppin’ out a couple little Duprees, as promised, but for now he’s very much in his not ready for love yet era. His vibe is confident, playful, and just controlled enough that when he finally lets go, it feels earned. And the best part? He doesn’t just say the right things, he backs it up with how he shows up.
Then there’s Lyric, and I adored her. She’s a mortician who spends her days dealing with the recently departed, and the way the story leans into her personality is so charmingly specific. Lyric isn’t blandly quirky, she’s actual and relatable in that I know who I am and I’m not pretending kind of way. Her back and forth with the dead is a wonderfully dark edge that keeps the tone from feeling too serious, even when things get emotional.
The setup is irresistible: the roommate agreement, the boundaries, the almost hookup energy hanging over them like a dare, and that delicious tension of this is not what we promised ourselves. I loved how their connection is rooted in history and complicated feelings because the romance isn’t just strangers to lovers. It’s more like learning how to be new with someone you already know, which makes the payoff so much better.

I needed this!! I’ve been on a bit of an epic adventure binge lately, and this was the perfect breath of fresh air. There weren’t bells and whistles, just a sweet, spicy, banter-filled, heartwarming read. I breezed through it and could have easily read it in one sitting.
Waylon is looking for a roommate, ideally one who won’t fall in love immediately and move out. So when his friend Darcy suggests the perfect solution, her bestie and also the woman he spent an unforgettable though sadly PG night with last year, he has to figure out if he can handle living with the distracting woman who is still under his skin, whose presence made his heart feel something he definitely wasn’t ready for. Well, it looks like he’s about to find out.
Waylon is that perfect sweet talking cowboy, with tattoos and slutty little glasses to boot. He can’t help but be taken with Lyric. She’s a sexy, sassy mortician with a dirty mouth that is more than happy to tell Waylon exactly what she wants from him. In other words, a mutually beneficial arrangement between friends. With a few strict stipulations in place, it seems like a good idea. Waylon isn’t ready or interested in relationships, and neither is Lyric. But soon it isn’t just the bedroom they look forward to. It’s the everyday moments, dinners at home and quiet nights in, just the two of them.

This was a quick, light-hearted romance featuring one of the most unique pairings I've come across in a while—a cowboy and a mortician!
Waylon is looking for a roommate and Lyric needs a place to live, so moving in together seems like the perfect solution. They already know each other through mutual friends, making the arrangement feel comfortable from the start. Of course, things become a little more complicated when they decide to add a "roommates with benefits" element to their living situation.
I enjoyed the easy, fun nature of the story and found it a very fast read. Waylon was particularly easy to like, and I appreciated the quirky dynamic between the two MC's. There's plenty of chemistry between them and the spice is woven throughout the story.
Where I struggled slightly was with the emotional development of the romance. While I could clearly see the physical attraction between Waylon and Lyric, I wanted more moments that showed why they were falling for each other beyond that attraction. For much of the book, their relationship felt centred on chemistry, so when the deeper feelings and love declarations arrived later on, they felt a little sudden to me.
I think I would have connected more strongly with the romance if there had been more emotional build-up, vulnerability, and character development throughout their journey together. I wanted to see more of what made them perfect for each other, rather than simply being told they were.

How long will they be able to keep the hanky out of the panky?

There was a big build up just for it to basically finish after that, the ending feels a bit rushed. Open door spice scenes. Lots of laughs and chemistry. I did not read book 1 and followed this book easily (probably would have made more sense about Darcy, Lou and Ridge if I had of though).

Cute, Sexy Romance
In this second installment of the Family of Misfits series, we get up close and personal with Waylon and Lyric. He’s our sunshine, while she’s the roommate. I wouldn’t necessarily call her grumpy, but she has a slightly dark edge in a good way.
Waylon is once again looking for a roommate since his last two ended up falling in love and moving out. Mutual friend Darcey feels that Lyric would be the perfect fit. Sure, they shared a kiss years ago, but that’s water under the bridge. Waylon and Lyric both struggle with being alone, so it seems like the perfect arrangement. Once the house rules are set, the story begins.
I’m so glad they immediately broke the rules, which made for a sexier romance albeit a bit gratuitous at times, but they were fun roommates for sure. Waylon has this sultry sexiness about him, while Lyric is not shy about what she wants at all. Plus, Tater!!! He was the star of the show.
While these two crazy kids navigate their feelings sometimes a little too thoroughly, we have the rest of the “family” chiming in with advice. It’s clear the best thing for them both would be to make it official. I do love a series where previous and upcoming characters are involved.
The book is well-written, and I found Lyric and Waylon easy characters to connect with right away. The book reads well as a standalone; however, I’ll probably go back and read the first one. It’ll be interesting to see who falls in love next.

This book was the perfect mix of adorable chaos, hilarious banter, and STEAM. I had the biggest smile on my face the entire time. Between the playful banter, unhinged group chats, cozy roommate tension, and the sweetest dog content, this book completely owned me.

I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for Sunshine Seeks Roommate by Kat Savage, and I had such a fun time reading it!
Waylon completely stole my heart ❤️ especially alongside his adorable corgi, Tater. Tater is basically the cutest little baby potato pup ever, and every scene with him made me smile. And Waylon wearing glasses? Especially the tortoise shell ones? Obsessed. The way Lyric is so into him when he has them on made those moments even better.
Lyric works in funeral and cremation care, which gave the story an interesting balance between emotional depth and all the lighthearted, fun chemistry between them. The entire book has such a warm, feel good vibe, and I found myself smiling through most of it. 🥰
The friends with benefits dynamic was done so well. Their chemistry felt natural, playful, and genuinely emotional at the same time. I loved watching their relationship grow, especially the softer moments where they take care of each other. The way Lyric helps Waylon out when she’s on her monthly was honestly something else. those scenes were unexpectedly sweet and intimate. And a cowboy that gets down on his knees and begs? Omg yes. Absolutely loved that energy. 🙌

I loved this book and couldn't read the pages quick enough! The first paragraph had me hooked and I love how it linked back in at the end!

Waylon is a tattoo artist and a total, swoon-worthy golden retriever, while rocking his 'slutty glasses'. Even though he initially panics about having her in his space after messing up their first encounter a year ago, he falls incredibly fast and hard for her. The gradual buildup and sexual tension as they navigate becoming comfortable in the flat together is absolutely top-notch.
I could have read a whole book about the banter in the group chats, I loved how they all interacted with each other.

The grumpy x sunshine dynamic between Lyric and Waylon worked SO well and had me smiling the entire time.
Lyric is a mortician who would honestly rather spend time with the dead than deal with people, while Waylon is the complete opposite. He’s warm, caring, outgoing, and genuinely gives off golden retriever energy in the best way possible.
And the fact that they already shared a deep late-night conversation and a soul-shaking kiss before becoming roommates??? Yeah, the tension was already THERE 👀

This was a fun read with great characters and a strong found family vibe that I loved.
I loved Lyric and Waylon. They are good and genuine people who love their people hard and love the professions they’re in. But they drove me batshitcrazy with the whole push/pull thing going on because they couldn’t get out of their own ways and see how good they were together both in and out of the bedroom. Thankfully their friends give them lots of food for thought and in the end they realize just how good they are together.
While it took me a bit to get into the story, I did end up enjoying the ride. I loved catching up with Darcy, Ridge and Lou (who is a force to be reckoned with) and Killian and Banks were awesome. And speaking of Killian and Banks, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing who brings these two to their knees. Killian’s love interest, if that storyline does play out, will definitely be interesting, at but Banks is still up in the air, though there was a person mentioned in relation for Banks’ side gig ~ so we’ll just have to wait patiently to see how that all plays out.

This is book two in the Family of Misfits and even though it’s been a while since I read the first one, I was pulled right back into this group so easily. Lyric is a mortician with this dry, dark sense of humor and a tendency to keep people at arm’s length, and Waylon is a tattoo artist who is basically the opposite of her in every way. They already have history from a moment that never really got addressed, and then end up living together, which just makes everything between them impossible to ignore. Being in the same space all the time forces them to actually deal with what has been sitting there, and it just keeps building.
These two had chemistry that was off the charts and I loved how hard they both tried to fight it before finally giving in. Waylon has this softer, caring side that really shows in the way he takes care of her when she needs it, and Lyric matched him in a way that made their dynamic feel so balanced. I loved the mix of their personalities because it gave you those funny moments but also the emotional ones underneath it. The found family vibe with this group is still one of my favorite parts and just makes everything feel more real. And I’m not even going to pretend Tater didn’t completely steal scenes because that dog had me smiling every time.

This was such a good read, I enjoyed it from page one.
This is a second chance romance and it features Waylon and Lyric. Waylon is looking for a roommate, but he's hoping that this roommate is dependable, and does not move out too soon because they caught feelings. Lyric, who is a mortician, loves dead people and talks to them while making them look alive, and needs a place to stay. Her friend suggests she gets a new roommate, but when she finds out their new roommate is Waylorn, she hesitates. He's the guy she almost hooked up with a year ago. But when he tells her that she gets her own bathroom and can fill the sunroom with all her plants, she agrees.
These two are so fun together, the banter and tension between them was so good. But they both have one rule, no hanky panky. Can they follow their rule and not fall for each other?
If you love a second chance romance, grumpy/sunshine, black cat x golden retriever, with banter 100x, this book is for you.

I really wanted to love this one, the characters seemed totally up my alley and I loooooove a forced proximity, roommates-with-benefits scenario. For the most part the storyline was okay, but I really struggled with the immaturity of the characters for their ages. They were acting more like early-twenties than late twenties and early thirties and it kept pulling me out of the book.
From there, a lot of the book was focused on an intense amount of over explaining every thought, action and just common life knowledge. It is probably what attributed to both of the leads sounding so young as well, as it seems incredibly strange for someone to be explaining the basics of everything constantly. I did enjoy that the spicy scenes were well developed and with ample consent, and the emotional development was steady. I just wish so much of the book wasn't tell and not show.
Overall it was an okay, middle-of-the-road book, but not something I'd rave about.

Waylon + Lyric
Sometimes love sneaks up on you.
Waylon & Lyric have a moment a year or so before this book begins. We get a glimpse of it & why Waylon is feeling & thinking & why he left. Lyric just thinks he isn't interested for a portion of this book (PS he is SO interested).
At the time these two first meet Waylon is not really ready to settle down and Lyric sensing that (and she also believes he STILL doesn't want to settle down) which is why when they become roommates she suggests they also 'help each other out.' When they add that element into their friendship as well as hanging out.. and acting all domestic that's when the lines blur.
& I loved this messy ending only because it made Waylon realize his feelings for Lyric. He is very direct which I felt Lyric needed. No miscommunication here. Just straight up, I want you to want me.. and well, he does want her and for every day after that.
I really enjoyed this book and this group of friends.

Waylon & Lyric have a moment a year or so before this book begins. We get a glimpse of it & why Waylon is feeling & thinking & why he left. Lyric just thinks he isn't interested for a portion of this book (PS he is SO interested).
At the time these two first meet Waylon is not really ready to settle down and Lyric sensing that (and she also believes he STILL doesn't want to settle down) which is why when they become roommates she suggests they also 'help each other out.' When they add that element into their friendship as well as hanging out.. and acting all domestic that's when the lines blur.
& I loved this messy ending only because it made Waylon realize his feelings for Lyric. He is very direct which I felt Lyric needed. No miscommunication here. Just straight up, I want you to want me.. and well, he does want her and for every day after that.
I really enjoyed this book and this group of friends.

I received an ARC copy of Sunshine Seeks Roommate by Kat Savage through The Author Agency and was excited for a romance between a tattoo artist and a mortician!
The grumpy x sunshine vibes were role reversed with this story, as Lyric our FMC is described as having a black cat personality type, and Waylon our FMC is a friendly cowboy type.
This story gave big "..and they were roommates" energy, where we have a pair with a mixed connection forced into close proximity. Their chemistry and flow was very natural and believable, even in this shorter novel.
I do wish there had been more of those deep connection and conversation moments and (shockingly) less gratuitous sex. Don't get me wrong- I love a spicy book. I will happily read romances that are primarily erotica. When it comes down to it, I liked the characters and wanted more about them, but the short book had a disproportionately high amount of sex scenes that didn't serve the plot.
I think this book is great for someone who wants a short, steamy insta-love story with a big helping of miscommunication trope!

4.25/5...This book was such a fun surprise. The roommate setup, the unresolved almost-hookup tension, and the “absolutely no hooking up” rule created exactly the kind of chemistry I love in a romance. Waylon and Lyric had an easy banter that made their relationship feel natural from the start, and once the tension finally cracked, it was so worth the wait. Waylon came off like the classic commitment-averse guy at first, but I really liked that his fear of love wasn’t rooted in immaturity so much as timing. Underneath all the avoidance, he was secretly domestic and ridiculously gone for Lyric in the sweetest ways. Meanwhile, Lyric’s mortician career gave her such a distinct personality and added a quirky charm to the story without making her feel gimmicky. There were moments where the push-pull felt a little repetitive, and I wanted slightly more emotional depth once feelings were fully on the table. But overall, this was sexy, funny, cozy, and ridiculously easy to binge. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is a second chance romance featuring two people with major commitment issues, and honestly their chemistry was so good from the start. MMC finds himself needing a new roommate after his previous roommate moved out with a girlfriend, so his friend offers to help him find someone… which ends up being the FMC — the woman he ran away from years ago after a one night stand because catching feelings terrified him 😅
FMC works in a morgue (which I thought was such a fun and unique detail) and also desperately needs a place to stay, leading her right back into MMC’s life. Even though both of them try denying the connection they still clearly have, the tension between them was SO good.
Overall, I thought this book was really well written and the character development was amazing. There were plenty of funny moments mixed in with all the emotional tension, and the romance was absolutely on point. It had the perfect balance of spice and plot to keep me fully invested the whole time.

Is there anything better than finding a new to you author and their book exceeding every single expectation you had for it. Kat Savage's writing style is just amazing.
From the first page to the last, this book kept me absolutely captivated. The whit, sarcasm and humour just hit over and over again. Read in under a day, I literally loved every second of it.
Waylon, the tattoo artist cowboy. Lyric, the mortician that likes nothing more than vent her life problems to dead people. After one night together a while ago that was both something and nothing, moving in together seems like the worst idea ever. But a friendship just naturally grows between them from day one and they just fit together effortlessly. When an arrangement is made, the spice is off the charts! But what really makes this story so great is their almost constant inner monologues. They are funny and honest and ridiculously entertaining.
I can't rate this book anything other than 5⭐ it was just too good and too engaging to rate it anything else!
