Baron rouge #2

Rain of Blood

Rate this book
It’s time for the first victories to begin the rain of blood…

Manfred Von Richthofen survived his first aerial combat with light injuries only. As a rear gunner, though, he felt particularly frustrated by his inability to control the plane. Convinced that he must be able to fly and shoot at the same time to make the most of his mysterious mind-reading ability, he works hard to obtain his pilot license. It’s in March 1916, in the sky over Verdun, that the Red Baron earns his first victory as a pilot…

Pierre Veys was born April 7, 1959 in Cambrai, in the north. After graduating, he spent a year studying biology, but quickly turned to screenwriting, news and gags. His influences are from the authors Jack Vance, Michael G. Coney and Yves Dermèze (Paul Bera).

I still have mixed feeling about this series. The artwork and the colors are fantastic but the plot leaves a lot to be desired.

Maybe this volume suffers from the second book syndrome because it's not as interesting as the first. Manfred looks even less psychopath than in the first book. It doesn't tell a story but rather there's Manfred who tells his war stories to a friend. And later he tries to show him that he really has superpowers.

The pages set at night in Russia are beautiful. Still you can't see almost anything.

Let's see how it ends.

This second in a trilogy based on the real-life World War I aviation ace Manfred von Richtofen (aka the Red Baron) picks up immediately after the previous one. It's literally the next moment and the pages from the end of the first book just lead right into the first ones of this. Richtofen is still in training as a gunner and the first third of the book follows his training to become a pilot himself so that he can use his powers of premonition more effectively.

The story in this volume is a kind of choppy, he changes units, his schoolboy friend Willy from the first book is reintroduced as a fellow flier, there's a flashback to his time as a cavalry officer on the Russian front (including 7-page sequence in which he stalks a group of Cossaks in the dead of night, which is an impressive bit of artwork), and then an extended scene where he takes on a boxing champ in order to prove to Willy that he has supernatural powers in combat situations. As in the first book, the best art comes in the one aerial duel sequence in the middle of the book.

All in all, the book feels very disjointed in its 48 pages, and I wonder if the format was just too constraining for the writer. Instead of three small books, the project feels like it would have benefited from being conceived as one long work so that the writer could have room to work. Hopefully the last book can pull things back into a more cohesive narrative.

Pierre Veys and Carlos Puerta bring us what a very loosely told story of the fighting life of Manfred von Richthofen, as he becomes the infamous Red Baron of WWI. The writing is pretty thin no works in a pointless subplot about how Richthofen has some kind of telepathy that gives him an edge in combat. Too bad Veys spends so much time on that, since he otherwise crafts an interesting take that suggests Richthofen was some kind of psychopath who happened to be what Germany needed when war broke out. But the real star of this series is the artwork by Carlos Puerta, which is simply exquisite and deserves 5 stars on its own.
