The print has numerous errors because the text was scanned from another document. I did not find it necessary or sufficiently interesting to read it all, but most tidbits I read were fascinating snd suggested to me an exceedingly complex life that seemed to require more intelligence than I posses in order to keep from blundering left and right. On the other hand, our lives are every bit as complex as then, but it’s complexity is second nature to us. So, I suppose that it is 6 of one or half a dozen of the other. Indeed, what is truly marvelous is the speed at which life has changed.
I’d be willing to bet that Miss Manners has copies of every edition of this book in her library! This is a fascinating book to read in 2011. Much of the finer detail of its contents, are now only of essential reading to the historical novelist or researcher.
However, a proportion is surprisingly still of invaluable use. For example, on pages 69 to 72; the pronunciation of certain surnames; the knowledge of which (or lack of) continues to mark the speaker as being either ‘in’ or ‘out’.
