Run for your life…
With the killer at her heels, Claire has no choice but to leave Carter in the dark. She can’t risk his safety just because she misses the sound of his voice… But will the run of Claire’s life be worth it in the end? Or will her past catch up with her no matter how hard she tries to escape it?
I received a free copy of the book from the authors for my honest opinion.
Claire and Carter have been bffs for many years. Claire had rather be at his house then at her own. Both of her parents worked all the time which meant that she spent a lot of time home alone and making her own dinner. So therefore she had rather be at Carter's not only for the food but the company as well. Cater's older brother Adam spent time with them too teaching them a lot of different things about being a cop over the years that her and Carter have been friends.
Claire had a boyfriend whom she has never told anyone about. She has kept him a secret because he is like ten years older than her. She is sixteen and Liam is like twenty six. At dinner one night Claire hears Adam and Mr. Emerson talking about the Cavanaugh family. Claire's secret boyfriend, Liam is a Cavanaugh. Carter's brother Adam and their dad are both police officers.
Claire was out on one of her secret dates with Liam when he got a phone call and rushed out. After hearing the conversation between Adam and Mr. Emerson she decides to follow him instead of going home. She only wants to know the truth of what is really going on. Is the conversation that Adam and Mr. Emerson were having about Liam at dinner one night true or not?
Claire sees something that she was never meant to see. She tried to slip away without being seen but she wasn't quiet that lucky. She was so scared for her own life but she was more afraid for the people she cared about and didn't want to get them killed so she left town, her parents, her bff and her life behind. She took off running for her life and trying to save the lives of the ones she cared about the most.
She left knowing that she was going to hurt a lot of people but she thought she had no choice. Her bff Carter is devastated not knowing where she is or what has happened to her. He has no idea if she is alive or dead. He doesn’t know if she has been kidnapped and being tortured or what. His bff, his heart is missing from his life and it is tearing him apart and he doesn't know what to do about it or how or where to look for her.
Claire and Carter both have these great big hearts who never want to hurt anyone and they always want to do what is right. Both of them would put both of their lives in danger and hurt their own hearts if it means that they could save someone else from harm.
Melissa and Allana have written another amazing book. They just keep getting better and better. I just love their writing style. I love and hate the way they leave you hanging at the end of The Escape. They definitely leave you wanting more and more. I can't wait for the next book in the Gumshoes & Grifters series.

"The Escape" by Allana Kephart and Melissa Simmons is the prequel to a new series called "Gumshoes & Grifters". A 16, Clare McBride, has an older boyfriend that she thinks is just so cool and suave until she see's him kill someone. She finds herself on the run for life and left behind everything in order to protect her friends and family from this man. Little does she know how dangerous he really is and that no one is safe from him and his reach. Carter Emerson, is Clare's bff, and he's frantic to find her with the help of his brother who happens to be a rookie cop. Can they find her before it's too late?
This played out like a great TV show and has me impatient for the next installment of this series! I loved the characters and felt they were very believable. A very fast paced thrill ride that I can't wait to ride again!

The Escape is a novella in the upcoming Gumshoes & Grifters series by Allana Kephart and Melissa Simmons. I received a copy for free from the authors in exchange for an honest review.

Now Claire has to run in order to protect her loved ones. Carter Emerson is Claire's best friend and the youngest son of the local police chief. Devestated by Claire's disappearance, Carter and his older brother Adam, who has followed in their dad's footsteps, investigate the mysterious circumstances connecting Claire to a homicide.
Full of adventure and mystery, Claire and Carter tell this story in alternating perspectives which offers a wonderful insight into both sides of the puzzle. Claire's journey forces her to think outside the box to keep her identity hidden and stay ahead of the man she's running from. Carter must push past his fears for Claire's safety and go behind his dad's back to find the truth and bring Claire home. With Adam's help, he follows the clues Claire leaves - clues only he can decipher.
This prequel has me excitedly anticipating the first book in the series! I read it straight through in one sitting and immediately wanted more. A plot that keeps you guessing, characters that you love to root for, and beautifully blended writing styles makes this a Must Read for anyone who enjoys a good thriller. The Escape is a perfect lead-in to the Gumshoes & Grifters series.
I was provided with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The story revolves around a young and bewildered Claire McBride, who is on the run fearing her life. Having witnessed a brutal murder by someone who was the last person on earth she would have suspected to be murderous, Claire is confused, frightened, vulnerable, and above all, in danger. While she disappears and is at her wits' end to keep her sanity and life in check, Carter, Claire's best friend, philosopher and guide, has no intentions of letting her go. He is initially baffled at her disappearance but has a steely determination to bring her back at any cost. He seeks help from Adam, his older brother. Facing an array of hap-hazard and mysterious clues, Carter and Adam enter a world where ruthlessness rules all the time and the killers would not give a second thought before slitting their throats. Do they manage to keep themselves safe and also protect Claire, is what the book takes us through.
This power-packed thriller and adventure story was unputdownable and I finished it in one go. I loved the narrative - from two different perspectives, Claire's and Carter's. The plot and storyline were engaging and the pace was brisk and nail-biting. I loved the characters, especially those of the devoted Carter and the solemn and dependable Adam. I loved this book all the way through and highly recommend it to lovers of thrillers and adventures.
OMG I can not wait to get the next book in this series. I loved this prequel. The writers are great at blending their work so seamlessly you can't tell who wrote what, I enjoy that immensely.
Claire has to get away. Without the support of her family, she doesn't know where to go just that she has to get gone. I mean, she saw a murder, and not just any murder, her boyfriend committed it. I think the way it was described was fantastic. The depth of their words pulled me into the story, I read it all in one sitting.
★✩★✩★ 5- Fast Paced, Terror Filled -Stars ~this review may contain minor spoilers~
I can't go home; I'd be painting a giant target on the back of everyone I love.
Claire McBride just became an unwilling witness to a brutal murder at the hands of someone she thought she could trust, and now she's on the run. At sixteen years old, life as she knows it is over. Alone and terrified, she is forced to leave everything and everyone she knows behind in order to keep them safe. More than anything she wants to confide in her best friend, the boy who has been at her side for most of her life, but she has no other option than to keep him in the dark about what happened and where she is-to tell him anything would put him in incredible danger and she just can't risk him like that. With a killer on her heels is there such a thing as far enough away and is hiding out really the right choice or is she pushing a crazed killer too far?
Carter Emerson just woke up to a nightmare, one there is no escape from. His best friend since kindergarten has vanished without a trace, with no explanation and no leads and there is absolutely nothing he can do about it. After finding her car abandoned hours away from home, he and his brother begin to fear the worst. Will he ever see Claire again? Is she alive, is she hurt, how can he help her? With nothing but questions running through his head, and no answers, Carter is slowly starting to lose hope. The longer she is gone the bigger the chance she will simply turn into a cold case and not knowing is almost worse.
“It's gonna be okay. We'll find her, Carter. I promise. Whatever it takes.” I can't breathe, so I couldn't respond even if I wanted to. I don't believe him, but I don't want to tell him and make him feel any worse. So I let my brother lie to me while the pessimistic part of my mind goes over all the horrible things that could've happened to my friend, and I feel like I've been hollowed out inside.
I cannot begin to explain how much I am in love with these authors. They have this way of pulling me completely into their story right from the beginning and refusing to let go til the bitter end, and even then I still can't get the story or these characters outta my head. I just want more. I NEED MORE. I have to know what happens next, even though I'm secretly dreading the worst. Their female leads are always exceptional and Claire is no different. For a young character, she is brave and strong beyond her years, doing what she has to to survive. Most people would crack under the pressure she has weighing on her, but she pushes on to keep those she loves safe. I have the very strong urge to protect her, hold her, hug her, hide her, she pushes me into Momma Bear Mode BIG TIME. My heart bleeds for her and the situation she is in, losing everything and alone to fend for herself. I can't imagine living in that state of fear and loneliness due to no fault of her own. I felt bad for Carter too. He lost someone pretty damn close to him and I can't imagine feeling that helpless, although I wanted to slap the pessimist right outta him, even if I did understand the way he was feeling. This whole book is spent sitting on the edge of your seat, radiating tension, wondering what the hell is around the corner and I can still feel myself vibrating waiting to find out what happens next. These ladies do this to me every time and I kinda love them for it.... even as I also want to hunt them down and DEMAND ANSWERS, so bravo on another job fantastically done you two.
I wish I could go back home and reclaim my life. I wish, I wish, I wish, but I know in my heart that wishing is futile.
The Escape is an exciting YA novel rife with high emotion. It's told from the point of views of two teenagers, Carter & Claire, who finds themselves caught up in a dangerous situation. I enjoyed the parts from Carter's point of view best, as he struggles to deal with the disappearance of his best friend. Claire seems to handle everything a little too easy and some of the advantages she has in her situation seemed a bit contrived to me.
The beginning of the novel was abrupt. I would have preferred to spend a little more time with Claire in her normal life before she's forced to go on the run. Still, I adore the characters and the book had me gasping and tearing up more than once. I was all set to give it a four star rating, until I hit the ending. I don't mind being emotionally scarred by a book (that's what a good story is supposed to do, after all), nor do I mind a book ending in such a way as to compel me to read the next installment in the series, but when a book simply slams to a halt with no story arc completed it leaves me feeling frustrated and kind of cheated.
Will I read the next book? Yeah, I probably will, as I'm dying to know how it all turns out. I only hope it doesn't end the way this one did.
This isn't my first book by this team of ladies, and it certainly will not be my last.
I loved The Escape because it's full of suspense. I'm a suspense junkie. Anything that will keep my fingers scrolling through the pages is a must have.
This is definitely one of them.
Claire is a young teenager who has a boyfriend. He's seeming a little bit shady as of lately, so she decides to follow him. Total mistake. Now she's on the run for her life. Torn between leaving or telling her best friend Carter, she does what she deems the safest for everyone.
This isn't the case where everything just disappears. Her disappearance has caused someone to get angry. Angry enough to hurt people very close to her. She still can't come home because HE still might come for her. HE needs to find her and make sure she doesn't tell anyone what she saw. Ever.
Carter is in a tailspin trying to find Claire. His best friend has left without a trace. The only thing he could find was her abandoned car in Chicago. Time is running, Carter knows that if she isn't found soon, she may never be found again.
I really enjoyed this story. The way the characters were written, you could feel the emotions of each character.

A solid prequel to a new series! I was given a copy of this novella by the authors for an honest review and I was expecting something more like their Dolan Prophicies books a little more fantasy and a little less real life. This was a solid mystery to where you are constantly turning pages to find out what happens to Claire and Carter. The drama is intense and often sneaks up on you. The beginning is very fast paced and I wish there was a little more lead in to the story before the hits keep on coming. That was the only criticism for me was that the beginning was a little rushed but it hooked you in to the story right away. Maybe we will find out more about the backstory in later books in the series.
As far as characters go Claire and Carter and the secondary characters were extremely well done you can tell the events that shape the book truly effect everyone in different ways and how they all shape and move the story forward. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a mystery fan or a fan of Young Adult Fiction who is looking for a spine tingling read.
Tapping my fingers on the desk…..hmmmm, I just cannot get where I want to be with this review. I mean I already love these ladies from their first series. But, holy moly, great balls of fire, they have found their niche. Suspense/thriller it is! They have exploded onto the scene with an awesomely written book that never once stops moving. Crisp, clean characters that can be as easily pictured as looking at a photograph. They have penned themselves a winner, and yayyyyy is only the beginning. I will easily reread this book a hundred times, I just love Claire, Carter, Kate, just all of them. While I think I got between Liam and Claire in my imagination I can step back and laugh at myself for imagining it. The truth of it is they really pulled me in, painted their words so that I lived them in my mind. That takes talent, and they have it down pat. Kudos ladies!! I heartily recommend this book to others. 5 suspense filled stars for The Escape.
Reading the Escape doesn’t do it justice. I was pulled into Claire’s world and I felt so bad for Carter. Here is Claire dating a thug an really has no idea and POW she witnesses him murdering a man. Now she is on the run. She goes to her grandmother because she had no where else to run, whom gives her an Ungodly amount of cash an tells her Just stay safe. With the cash in hand its time to hit the road again. Meanwhile her parents and friends are a wreck an have called in the FBI. So Claire is hiding out in Boston and everyone is looking for her.
She ran to keep her family and friends safe. But are they safe?
Claire calls Carter only for him to tell her both her parents had been murdered…
I was so sad when her parents were murdered. No doubt it was because of the memory card she sent to the police. Poor child has lost her parents and she can’t even go to the funeral to say goodbyes. Her parents are gone will her best friend be next?!?!?!
Wow. I am stunned by this incredible book. The Escape is a new story from these ladies and it wrangled me in and kept me hooked.
Claire and Carter have been best friends for a lot of years. They have share almost everything. Claire hasn't told him that she has been seeing someone--an older someone. When he bails on a date, Claire uses the skills that Adam, Carter's older cop brother, taught them when they were younger.
Sometimes what we see takes us off of one path and dropkicks us down another one.
Claire has no choice but to run. I love the way this story is played out. Carter and Claire have a relationship that will withstand the obstacles that are being thrown at them. I'm excited to see where the ladies go with this series.
The escape awesome unfortunately something similar to this does happen quite frankly. Will definitely immediately buy book two I however don't like books where the main character goes through all the peril and it still happened. Someone she loved was killed
The escape awesome book u fortunately this really does happen all too often. Seeing something and running then have someone you love would be sooo hard can't wait to see Liam get what's coming to him 4-5 murder raps
What I liked: I love how Carter tries his best to find Claire after she leaves town. The friendship between those two is told very easily by how they act to each other and the lengths that Claire goes to protect Carter and Carter goes to bring her home. Claire ran for a good reason, to protect people but I think in a way she could have gone about it differently to try and protect everyone rather than running away, but her heart was in the right place. The dual POV aspect to the story works in favor of it because it shows both sides to the story and at the same times leaves you guessing what's going to happen next.
What I didn't like: The beginning, while good, was a little abrupt since I didn't really get to see Claire in her normal life before she runs away. Seeing her normal routine would have helped me get to know her as a character better I think.
Overall Review: Fast paced with a great storyline I found this book to be a very enjoyable read that I read in a single sitting because it kept my attention as I tried to figure out what happens next. While the ending is a bit sudden in a way it helps set up the premise of the future books in the Gumshoes & Grifters series.
Recommend?: I really would! If you're a fan of these genres of books I suggest you at least check the books out and decided for yourself!
Ok, so I wanted to really like this, and then it ended in a complete cliffhanger. I abhor cliffhangers, and hopefully if I read more of this series (it was really good) the final chapter will not end in a cliffhanger (much like the Face on the Milk Carton series...even the last book had a cliffhanger!).
Alright, besides the disappointing, yet thrilling ending that leaves you hanging, this was a good book. A little different than my normal read, but that's why I do giveaways, so I can read something different. These authors blend very well together, I honestly had no idea it was two authors until I read their blurbs and re-read the front cover. This book has action, suspense, and thrill, my heart was racing as she ran from Liam. My heart broke when she found out that he running couldn't save everyone.
This is a great little prequel, and those who love this genre will definitely want to give it a read. I won't go looking for the sequels, but if I come across them I will pick them up as these authors write a good thrilling suspense novel.

This is young adult mystery centered around 17 year old Clair McBride who witnessed a brutal murder and goes on the run to protect her family and friends. While she is hiding her best friend Carter Emerson is trying to find her. The story is very suspenseful and I liked it except for one thing, the book ends abruptly and you have to read the next book in the series to find out what happens next. I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway.
