Serena Carterett leads a team of masqueraders, shapeshifters and reformed thieves. Their task? To oppose the criminal Yllandu at every turn. It's a straightforward job -- until the Yllandu get their hands on a mysterious stone artefact, and at the behest of a powerful Lokant employer. When a strange riddle appears in the sky, the hunt for the Seven Dreams begins.
Who will find the seven keys, and what do they open? Nobody knows, but Serena is determined to deny the Yllandu the prize. Her team must battle Lokants and sorcerers, scholars and thieves to solve the puzzle first. The hunt will take them all the way across the Seven Realms -- and far into the darkness of their own past.

She writes colourful fantasy novels over copious quantities of tea, and rarely misses an opportunity to apologise for something. Spanning the spectrum from light to dark, her works include the Draykon Series, Modern Magick, The Malykant Mysteries and the Tales of Aylfenhame.
There's a new Draykon book! *happy dance* Featuring cameos from some of my favourite characters, a strong new cast with some great female leads (and a bloke with a knitting obsession), and Jisp, my new favourite animal sidekick.
I liked the idea of this book, but the characters felt flat, and there was never a point where the plot caught me. After getting 60% through the book at a slow slog, I gave up.
This is a bit of a confused mess. Characters who are play acting other characters, but we get pov from their play acted characters instead of the truth, and when all is revealed it's annoying, not surprising.
Interesting world with some thought put into the world building (not sure why they're relying on horses and carriages though).

Very engaging characters and storyline, but I really wish there had been at least some backstory included for people who are encountering this world for the first time. There's a tremendous amount of world-building going on in the background that is simply never explained in enough detail to really grasp what's going on if you've never heard of Draykons, Lokant, etc. before.
An Interesting story from the outset, although before I understood that the writing style of story was termed in an unusual way which I now assume was to set the opening scene while introducing the characters in the guise they were in at that moment, I misunderstood and thought if the whole book was like that I would put it down, SO Please Note, You must preserve and push on for the first few pages as all will become clear and off you will go on a merry adventure through a cleverly described whole new world of, well everything actually... (There's even a guy who loves knitting). Its a well paced story with the players becoming more complex as they are set the challenge of finding the keys throughout the Seven dreams and the story quickly develops new depths as the characters became people we might know.. The ending has a little twist (Sorry no teasers so read it and find out) and the story seemed to end all too soon, I was just getting the hang of plodding along behind everyone as one of the team members and they solved the mystery and sadly stopped. I so hope there will be may more adventures for our worldly Secret Agents for me to follow.. Review copy provided by Readingalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was an enjoyable read. The author created interesting worlds and characters. I especially like how descriptive the author is with the different worlds, scenery, creatures, dreams, etc.
Serena, Fabian, Egg, Teyo, and Iya remind me of the cast of the tv show Leverage, especially as they each have special talents and several have checkered pasts, but they use their skills for good. A reader cannot help but enjoy Jisp.
The author has crafted a compelling story with a variety of twists, turns, and surprises to keep the reader engaged and eager to find out what will happen next.
I would be interested in reading other stories set in this world.
I received a copy of the eBook from Reading Alley in exchange for a review.
I will literally read anything set in this world/worlds. The setting, the descriptions, all the little world-building tidbits ... love! The story though ... I just don't know. Maybe it's because I read the original trilogy 2 years ago but it felt like it took me forever to get re-acquainted with the goings-on in the realms. I like the new characters well enough and it was nice briefly reuniting with old friends, but the plot, especially towards the end, left me cold and unsatisfied for some reason. Would still love more work set in this world though. Short stories please.
I received the ebook in exchange for an honest review. This book is filled with draco's and very talented actors. They are persuiing to find seven Keys, but they're opposed at every turn. This causes an exhilerating and interesting read. I liked it
3.5 stars. A different kind of quest - one where the goal is to earn the paycheck rather than accomplish a personal mission. But an enjoyable quest nonetheless. I liked the character development of the team members the most - and Serena is one of the best female leads I've met in a while. A smart, strong, talented leader, she still deals with all the inner doubts and fears that any real person would in her situation.
I haven't read any of the Draykon books before (though I intend to!), and I was able to follow along with the characters, setting, and plot just fine. I'll definitely be reading more in this series!
